is not long since the grave closed on the remains of the accomplished and interesting Miss She bade fair, by her healthy appearance, to have lived long, and to have been the delight and comfort of her parents, and a blessing to society:-but "like a flower of the field," so was she cut down: the wind of disease passed over, and "she was gone." Yes she, though blooming and youthful, was the mark of the king of terrors. But not without hope do I refer you to her early departure. Oh! no; I can say that she possessed 66 a good hope through grace" of eternal life, and that death to her was gain. Yes, she found the real blessedness of early piety: the Saviour she had sought in youth, was now her support; and his grace cheered her upon the bed of death. Like another dear young lady who died a little before her, she found the dark valley lighted by the Saviour's presence. "Oh (said she) I would not exchange my situation with the healthiest, or wealthiest."

These, my young friend, are facts, that I wish you to reflect on; and to confess that these persons were not melancholy or gloomy in the possession of youthful religion. Oh may you learn a lesson from their early removal; and may it lead you to seek the same Saviour, whose love cheered their de parting moments.

to come."

I would earnestly intreat you not to delay an application to the same precious Saviour. He is still willing and able to save you; but oh! I intreat you, do not neglect this only way, by which you can escape "the wrath There is but one Saviour, who is able to deliver you from eternal misery; if you neglect this one, this great concern, you cannot escape: for "there is no other name given under heaven among men whereby you can be saved." Do then, my young friend, flee to this Saviour, who has kindly invited you to come unto him. I am not telling you of danger from which you cannot escape; neither am I telling you of a way of deliverance that is out of your reach. Oh no-I rejoice to be able to point out the way, and to assure you, that if you strive to enter in at the strait gate, you shall find admittance. The promises of the Bible assure you of a welcome reception; the example of thousands who have sought and found the one thing needful, encourages you to seek the prize, the unspeakable gift. Do not therefore remain indifferent on such a point; do not trifle with your eternal happiness. What would you think of a youth who would forego his possession of a large and ample inheritance, for the sake of a few day's enjoyments opposed to his father's will?-how would you pity the poor delud

ed youth!-Do not then act a similar part upon a subject of infinitely higher importance. The foolish youth would only forego an earthly inheritance, which could only be enjoyed for a few years at most:-but you in preferring the vanities of time to the realities of eternity, put far from you eternal life, a crown of glory which cannot fade away.

Let these remarks have a place in your reflections, meditate upon the subject, and ask yourself honestly if you were this moment on a dying bed, what would then appear to be of most importance, the vanities of the world, or the enjoyments of religionthe fleeting pleasures of earth-or the unfading glories of the heavenly world ?—and as you would decide then, let me entreat you to decide now. You know not what may be the events of this year-this week may behold you upon the bed of sicknessor this day, yea "this night, your soul may be required of you”-oh then what will you do without religion-what will you do if destitute of faith in Christ ?-let me entreat you to seek the teachings of the Holy Spirit to convince you of your state by nature, your need of a Saviour, and to shew your need of a change of heart. Pray that you may be led to cry, "God be merciful to me a sinner" to pray with fervour and per

severance for this greatest, best of blessings -nothing else can deliver you-but blessed be the riches of the Saviour's grace, that he is able and willing to save unto the uttermost-that he has invited you to come, and and still invites, and assures you that he will in no wise cast you out.-Oh that you may in this accepted time, "seek the Lord while he may be found," you shall not seek in vain.

and be assured

FAREWELL.

Ah! children, you may be very poor and have many troubles; but what is all you suffer to the sufferings of poor slaves in the West Indies.

I have told you a great deal about their

hardships lately, and now you shall hear something more.

See those cruel men with swords in their hands! See the poor children how they cling to their distressed mother; while the mother stretches out her arm for help to her husband! I will tell you what all this means. The owner of this slave family has fallen into debt. His goods are seized for the payment of his debts; and amongst the rest of his goods, his poor slaves. And here the officers have dragged the slaves out of their little hut, and they must go to the market to be sold for the payment of their master's debts. Now it might happen that they would get a better master; so that they might change for the better but what makes them so unhappy is this: that they will not be sold altogether, but in lots. So the mother may be bought by one new master; and the father by another, and the little children may go to a third master a great way off. How would you like to be torn away from your parents? Oh! bless God that you were not born a negro slave; and pray that he will have mercy upon the poor slaves in the West Indies.

How humbling it is to think that slaves are sold and bought in the market place like so many cattle. They cannot choose their masters like servants in England. How,
