readings of the Psalms, whenever the Rock was spoken of, she stopped her mama, saying, "There, mama, is the Rock again."

Her mother having often observed that she was occupied in prayer, and especially at those times when she was herself praying, said to her one day, "My dear child, I am pleased to observe that you generally seem to pray when I do." "Yes, mama," she replied. "I like to pray when you do, because it is so pleasant to feel that we are both praying at the same time for each other." "Will you tell me, my dear, what prayers you say? are they the same which you have been taught by me, or do you use other words?" "Why, mama, sometimes I try to pray myself; at others, I use the prayer you have taught me; but I like to use other words, and therefore it is, I am sometimes anxious that you should come to bed earlier, for I get tired, and am afraid I shall fall to sleep, and then I am obliged to use what I have learnt from you." "And will you tell me, my dear Ann, what you pray for when you do not use your usual prayer ?" "No, mama, I would rather

only tell God what I say then."

Upon another occasion, when she had shown much pleasure in listening to the Scriptures, her mother said, "My dear, if

it be so pleasant to read these books now, how delightful it will be to appear in heaven with David, and Moses, and the other good men who wrote them." After a little pause, she replied, "I used to think because God was angry with Moses, and would not allow him to enter the land of Canaan, that he was not in heaven; but I do not think so now: indeed, I am satisfied he is there."

It pleased the Lord to deal gently with this dear little girl; her sufferings were by no means so great as is often the case with consumptive patients. During the last few weeks however of her life, she was much distressed by wounds in different parts of her body, from having been so long confined to her bed, and the worn out state of her frame; but during all she never murmured or repined, though latterly her weakness, and the approach of death, caused her great restlessness and anxiety: and it was most gratifying to those who attended upon her, that only upon one occasion, during her long continued and often distressing illness, did she shed a tear.

The day before her flight to heaven, it was evident that she was drawing near to the end of her short but happy course: when she was informed that she could not continue long with us on earth, but might perhaps, by the next Sabbath, be in heaven,

she was evidently convinced that such was the case, and assured her surrounding friends that she was happy.

Every circumstance marking a very speedy end to her sufferings, her two elder brothers were called into the room, both of whom she allowed to kiss her; they, with their parents, once more engaged with her in the solemn act of prayer, that the presence of her Saviour might be with her, that she might have the everlasting arms beneath her, and finally, receive an abundant entrance into the joy of her Lord. At the conclusion of this exercise, she was asked by her father, "If she were happy in Jesus Christ?" to which she distinctly answered, "Yes." Judging from her manner that she was likely to sleep, her father left her in the care of a servant who had faithfully and affectionately watched over her during the whole of her affliction. He returned in less than five minutes with her mama, when they found that she had that instant fallen asleep in Christ.

SHORT ADDRESS TO CHILDREN.

Dear children, attend to me a few minutes, while I make some observations on a very pretty text of Scripture; which I hope will rejoice your minds when you hear it, as it

concerns you entirely. Were I to tell you that I know of a rich person who loves one of you, and intends taking you to his house, and making you as one of his own children, you would be all attention, perhaps eagerly inquiring, 'who is it? Is it I? Now then the verse I am about to direct you to does speak of one great and glorious, greater than language can describe, who is ready to love you, and to make you his own chil dren. This great one is the Lord God, your creator and preserver, and who says, (Proverbs viii. 17.) "I love them that love me, and those that seek me early shall find me." Are you not many of you already saying to yourselves, O that I may be one of those children whom God will love!' Well, fall down and beseech the Lord to enable you to love him, "with all your mind, soul and strength." Observe, the promise is to those who seek early, or when young in years. Perhaps some of you are saying, 'I would seek God if I knew how, but God is so far off-he is so high-he dwells in heaven-how then can I a poor child seek this great God?' Come then I will tell you: "Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners." (1 Tim. i. 15.) To save children, who though little in stature are often great sinners; and it is through his name you may seek God, by prayer, asking him for

all you need for Christ's sake. "I love them that love me, and those that seek me early shall find me." God will love you, not for a day, a month, a year only, but for ever he will love you, and not leave you to follow the inclinations of your own wicked heart, but will give you a new heart, according to his promise, (Ezek. xxxvi. 26.) He will love and never leave you till he bring you to his heavenly kingdom. early in life, early in the day and seek God by prayer for the forgiveness of sins, through Jesus Christ. Do not say, 'I will seek another time,' and so put off the work; remember, youth will soon be gone,-you will not long have the opportunity of seeking early. Every minute makes you older, and every minute your heart grows harder; and so perhaps you may go on till the sweet season of youth pass by without your seeking God; and your heart grow so hard that you may not feel disposed to love him.

I would close this address with a truly affecting anecdote, which the writer of this, when young, heard repeated by a clergyman and never forgot. An old man one day taking a child on his knee, entreated him to seek God now-to pray to him—and to love him; when the child looking up at him asked, "but why do not you seek God ?" The old man deeply affected answered, “I
