CHILDREN'S FRIEND.

No. LXI.

JANUARY, 1829. VOL. VI.

NEW YEAR'S DAY.

Hannah. Good morning! dear mother; I am come to wish you a happy new year: for this is " new year's day."

Mother. I wish you the same, my dear Hanrah; but what do you think will make people spend a happy year?

H. Why, mother, I think that I should be happy, if I might have a new doll, and a number of playthings, and some nice playfellows, and fine weather, that I might run about and play; and a whole holiday all the year round.

M. Oh! Hannah, Hannah! and do you think all this would make you pass the year

happily? I always observe you enjoy a half holiday far more than a whole holiday; for a morning's lessons or work make the afternoon play sweeter. But, my dear child, is there no other thing you want to make you pass the year happily?

H. (Thinking a little) Oh yes, mother I know what you mean now, you mean that I must be good, and never have you angry with me; for I am always unhappy when you are angry.

M. But is there no other reason why you should wish to be good?

H. Yes, mother: if you are angry with with me, it is because I have been naughty; and if I am naughty, God is angry; and you tell me God's anger is much more dreadful than your's, even if you punish me ever so much.

M. Very true, Hannah. But now let me hear you repeat the four verses I set you to learn out of the 39th Psalm.

H. Pray, mother, may I ask you a question ?

M. Yes, love.

H. Why did you find out these four verses from the rest of the whole Bible for me to repeat on new year's day?

M. Because I thought they were very well suited to teach us what thoughts we should have on new year's day. Can you tell me who made that Psalm ?
