Klaproth, 4to. bds. £1. 31333 1835 A history of Japan, since the year 660 before Christ, from a native source, and translated by a competent scholar, is a work of which the great importance cannot fail to be recognized. M. Klaproth has added in a supplement the continuation to the present time of the annals, which ended in the original with the year 1611. This Supplement is also derived from native sources. Not the least remarkable feature of this volume, is the Mythological History which Klaproth has prefixed; and the elaborate Index which M. Landresse has subjoined to the work is of extreme usefulness. 31332 ASIATIC SOCIETY OF JAPAN, Transactions, complete from the beginning in October 1872 to Dec. 1880, in 19 parts and volumes, 8 vols. to which is added Vol. IX pt. 2, August 1881, 8vo. numerous plates, some coloured, facsimiles and plans, sd. £10. A scroll mounted on polished wood roller, backed with figured brocade, 54 feet long, 12 inches deep. This is one of four similar pieces representing a Buddhist ceremonial, and the death of a high priestly functionary. The figures are of a marked character, and cleverly executed. The priests especially and the priestesses are highly characteristic, and of a comic type 31346 A second part of the preceding; about 45 feet in length, and 12 inches in depth, mounted. The scenes are a continuation of the Buddhist ceremonial, and the figures, which are life-like and well painted, are very striking; probably no painting could bring to the mind more forcibly the nature of the old Buddhist life in Japan, than the scenes depicted on these scrolls the two rolls together, £4. BIRDS AND FLOWERS. A very gorgeous painting of a peach-tree in bloom, with two birds seated on a branch, at the foot three full blown rhododendron (bhotan) flowers, the colouring of the flowers very natural and striking, drawn by Chiu-wu (Naga-mito ?), on thick parchment-paper, mounted on polished wood rollers, 10 feet in length, 3 feet 6 inches in width, 30s |
