dulged in, will make us hate instead of loving our neighbours. It is essentially a malicious feeling. It leads us to hate those who possess things that we do not possess. Covetousness is

an unjust desire to have that which belongs to others. Mere wishing for things may not be wrong in itself, but unjust wishing for them always is. We must not so set our hearts upon things as to desire to obtain them unlawfully. Envy, jealousy, covetousness are all of the same class; all consist in an unjust craving after what belongs to others, and what we have no right to. We should learn to be contented. We should also learn to be industrious. We should labour to get our own living, that we may have sufficient for our own wants and have something to give to supply the wants of others.

Thus, very briefly, we have considered the Commandments which teach us our whole duty towards God and towards our neighbour.

I will here add a few

Suggestions for Self-Examination. Consider whether you yield a willing obedience to your parents and to those in authority over you. Do you show them the respect due to them? Do you obey their wishes as well as their direct commands? Have you ever said or done anything to make others treat those in authority with disrespect? Do you show pride or contempt towards those inferior to you?

Do you cherish a spirit of revenge or hatred against anyone? Remember how Our Lord condemns the unforgiving spirit (St. Matt. vi. 14, 15). Consider whether you keep your temper in check, or give way to it when temptation presents itself. Have you ever led others to do wrong or given them cause for anger against you Have you injured your health by intemperance or evil-living?

Consider whether you make every effort to keep yourself, your thoughts,

your actions pure. Do you frequently recall the fact that your body is the Temple of the Holy Ghost? Do you refuse to read bad books, and avoid making friends of those who would lead you into sin? Think whether you always act as in the sight of the all-seeing, all-holy God?

Consider whether you are honest and upright in all your dealings. Do you ever try to get anything by false pretences? Do you ever yield to the temptation to boast of your advantages of birth, station, talent? Do you ever accept praise to which you are not entitled? Think whether you are in the habit of wilfully wasting either your own time or property or that of others? Is it your practice to set apart some of your time and money for religious uses, for Church, missions, the poor?

Do you keep a strict watch over your tongue? Consider whether you are in the habit of speaking unkindly of anyone, or do you take pleasure in

hearing unkind things said about others? Think whether you exaggerate facts, or try to make things appear other than they really are.

Do you covet either the property or the reputation of others? Think whether you keep a strict watch over your thoughts. Do you try to check those which are wrong, and encourage those which are right? Are you inclined to envy those who possess more of this world's goods than yourself ?

I would not have you examine yourself on all these points on the same day. Take one at a time and, bearing in mind the rules for meditation [page 24], make it a "subject for meditation," closing with this short

ME

Prayer after Self-Examination. ERCIFUL God, Everlasting Father, I come before Thee confessing my sins. They have been many and great, and my misdeeds are without number. I humble myself before Thee

and confess that in thought, word, and deed I have sinned against Thee. The burden of my sins weighs upon me heavily. Have mercy upon me. According to the multitude of Thy mercies do away my offences, and purge me from every stain of sin. Pardon my presumptuous sins, forgive my secret faults. Create in me a clean heart, renew a right spirit within me. Give me grace to make good and holy resolutions; help me to carry them out in practice. Grant me the aid of Thy Holy Spirit, that worldly and sinful things may have less power to tempt me, that I may serve and please Thee in this life, and worship and praise Thee throughout eternity, for Jesus Christ's sake. Amen.

Thanksgiving.

PRAISE and glorify thy Holy Name for Thy power, Thy wisdom and Thy great glory. I thank Thee for Thy love to me and to all man
