9) William Whifton, geboren 1667 zu Northon in der Graffchaft Leicester, geftorben 1755. Er erwarb fich durch feine Schrift: Theorie der Erde, felbft die Achtung des grofsen Newton und zeigte fich auch in feinen andern mathematifchen und phyfikalifchen Werken als einen grofsen Kopf. Seine erften theologischen Schriften fanden gleichfalls Beyfall; in den Spatern indeffen entdeckte man Ketzereien, vorzüglich arianifche und anabaptiftifche Grundfätze, welche ihm viele Verfolgun gen zuzogen. In welcher Schrift er den hier angeführten Satz behauptet habe, ift dem Schreiber diefes unbekannt. Whiston war übrigens ein Mann von Gelehrsamkeit, lebhafter Einbildungskraft und einem vortrefflichen Herzen. In feinem soften Jahre schrieb er feine eigne Lebensbefchreibung.
