ration in divine Worship were perfectly innocent, and justifiable in itself; yet is it not productive of very bad Confequences? Does it not evidently obftruct that cordial Love and Harmony, which ought to fubfift among Chriftians? That it should not do so, I readily allow. But, I appeal to yourselves, is it not fo in Fact? Is there that fincere Affection, Cordiality, Friendship, Courtefy, Affability, and Openness of Behaviour, in our Intercourfe together, which our holy Profeffion requires? Is there not rather a Coldness, a Stiffness, a Shiness, a Referve; what fhall I call it a Something not perfectly Chrif tian and Evangelical. I do not deny that we may be faulty in this Respect, as well as you. There are, no doubt, fevere, uncharitable, cenforious Members of the Church; as well as morofe, referved Diffenters. The Conduct of both is highly blameable: and yet I cannot help thinking, that you are most to blame, in giving Occafion for it.—Let us therefore, for the Love of God, and for our dear Redeemer's Sake, lay aside all Differences and Diftinctions, all Contentions and Animofities; and embracing one another as b 3 Brethren,

Brethren, let us with one Heart, and with one Mouth, praife and worship our common Lord and Father. Thus united together in one compact Body, we may, through the divine Bleffing, fuccefsfully repel the Attacks of the Enemy, Our Church, having received fo valuable an Acquifition from your joining it, will gain double Strength, and fhine with additional Luftre; the great Bulwark of Proteftantifm, the Terror of Herefy and Infidelity, and the Praise and Glory of the Chriftian World,

I must now turn to the Methodists; who feem to be attached to no particular Communion, or Form of Worship; but refort to every Place indifferently, where they expect to hear the Word of God preached in it's greatest Purity and Perfection, The Doctrines you hold, I apprehend, agree in the Main with thofe of our Church; which she derives from the only true Standard of Faith, the holy Scriptures; and which the every where teaches with great Clearness and Energy. Your Zeal for our common Faith is equally well-known and praise-worthy. You must therefore, if you are confiftent with. yourselves,

yourselves, approve of our Articles and Liturgy. Why then do you defert us?-The true Reason, perhaps, I have already fuggefted: our Preaching does not please you." -To make all juft Conceffions, and to deal fairly and honeftly with you, I must acknowledge that fome of our Clergy, the younger ones especially, are greatly deficient in that very material Part of Inftruction, the expounding the grand Doctrines of Chriftianity. They do, not at least, insist upon them fo often, and fo ftrenuously, as they ought; but go too much into the Effay-way of difcourfing. But this, I am certain, will never justify you in causing Schifms and Divifions in the Church, What? because fome few Clergymen are remifs and negligent in a Part of their Duty, fhall we run into a direct Violation of our's? into a manifest Breach of the great Law of Love and Unity, fo plainly and repeatedly taught and enforced in the facred Writings ?-But fuppof we have not all the Inftruction from the Pulpit we could defire. Are our Prayers of no Value? Do they not in a great Measure anfwer the Purpofe of a Sermon ? And fhall

we rafhly exchange them for the extemporary Effufions of every hot-headed Enthufiaft? oftentimes of very ignorant, illiterate Men; and, what is worse, very uncharitable? who indulge an intemperate Warmth and Anger in their Discourses, and fcruple not to throw out virulent and fcandalous Invectives against the Ministers of the established Church. Is this Chriftian? Is this edifying? Is this preaching the Gospel of the meek LAMB OF GOD?

But, let me afk you, are your best and most approved Teachers perfect Patterns of true Christian Preaching? Do they state and expound the Doctrines of our Religion, pure and unmixed with any human Inventions? Do they explain and inculcate the great Duties, and moral Precepts of it? In this Refpect, I fear, nay I am convinced, they are greatly wanting. And as to the Doctrines, on which you lay fo great a Stress, and for the Sake of hearing which properly expounded you withdraw yourselves from the Affemblies of your Chriftian Brethren; I am apprehensive that, however firmly you may believe and maintain the grand fundamental Articles of our Faith, you build fome unwarrantable

warrantable Structures of your own upon them, that are attended with very pernicious Confequences.-To inftance in the Doctrine of divine Grace. The Efficacy and Neceffity of the Influence of the Holy Spirit, to fanctify our Hearts, and enable us to please God in Works of Piety and Goodness, you rightly believe and teach. So far we agree. But you go farther; and by your Additions to this most true and comfortable Doctrine, you expose it to Ridicule and Contempt. For you affert, that the Call of a Sinner (that is, in short, of every Man that shall finally attain to Salvation; for all Men are Sinners by Nature) is fudden, instantaneous, fenfible, and irrefiftible; that, inftead of growing in Grace, as the Scripture teaches, or being daily renewed by the Holy Spirit, as our Church moft accurately expreffes it, the Work is performed all at once; and that we have nothing to do, but to rejoice, and be faved. Does not this Notion drive fome into Prefumption, and others into Despair; according as their bodily Constitution is ftrong or weak, and their animal Spirits apt to be elated or depreffed?-You repre
