there be many one that fay there is no Salvation or Help for her in her God; But thou only true God, Father, Son, and Holy Ghoft, in whofe Name fhe was baptiz'd, and whom the never denied; be thou her merciful God, and let not any Tranfgreffion or Fault of her own or of her Anceftors be laid to her Charge. Remember, O everlasting God in the higheft Heavens, our dear Sifter for the beft, according to thy great Goodness, when no mortal Man any more remembreth her below on Earth: Comfort the Soul of thy Servant as long as she is walking thro' the Pfal. 23. 4. Eeing our Lord fays, Ye are the Math. v. Salt of the Earth: And feeing he 13. alfo commands us, To be wife as Serpents, and innocent as Doves; to be joyn'd What can become us better than to know with Simand avoid the wiles of the Devil, left we, plicity. who have put on Chrift the Wisdom of the 1 Cor. i, Father, fhould feem ignorant of the Me- 24thod of making our Salvation and Election fure. For we are not only to dread that Perfecution, which by open Violence makes havock of the Servants of God. 'Tis eafy to be cautious where the Danger is apparent; and any one can make himfelf ready for Battel, when the Enemy is in view. Then is the Enemy to be most

fear'd, and most narrowly watched, when he skulks privily, and under a fair fhew of Peace, fteals upon us infenfibly; From which fly Practice, the Devil has gained the Name of Serpent. Such was always the Craft of the Devil, who continually circumvented Mankind, by an unknown and fecret Treachery; thus, foon after the Creation he flatter'd our firft Parents, and taking Advantage of their unwary Credulity, did entangle their Souls into Sin with his Lies. Thus he endeavour'd to tempt our Lord himself; He came to him in Difguife, as if he intended to fet upon him, and deceive him unawares; but he was known and repulsed, and was therefore overcome, because he was discovered. Whence we may learn to avoid the ways of the Old Man, and follow the Steps of Chrift our Conqueror. And left we should be again entangled in the Snares of Death, let us foresee our Danger, and embrace everlasting Happiness. But how fhall we attain to everlafting Happiness, unless we keep thofe Commands of Chrift, by which alone Death may be vanquished and fubdued? Efpecially fince he has faid, If thou wilt enter into Life, keep the Commandments? And again, Te are my Friends John xv. if you keep my Commandments; henceforth I call you not Servants, but Friends. laftly,

laftly, our Lord counts fuch couragious and faithful, and to be founded on a Rock, and to be immoveable and unfhaken by the Storms and Waves of this World. Whosoever, faith He, heareth thefe Sayings Mat. vii. of mine, I will liken him to a wife Man, who 24 built his House upon a Rock, and the Rain defcended, and the Floods came, and the Winds blew and beat upon that House, and it fell not, because it was founded upon a Rock. Therefore if we would be like our Saviour, we must learn to do whatsoever he Taught and Practifed. But how can he be faid to believe in Chrift, who does not those things which Chrift commanded to be done? Or how fhall he obtain the Reward of Faith, who will not keep the Commandments? Such a one must needs waver and wander out of the way, who being feduced by the Spirit of Error, is carried away with every ery Wind of Doctrine;

neither can fuch a one be a Proficient in Chriftianity, who does not hold fast the Profeffion of his Faith without wavering.

My beloved Brethren, we must not on- Herefies to ly avoid thofe Attempts of the Devil be avoided. which are most manifest and notorious, but even those Snares which he has fecretly laid to entrap us; for what Contrivance could be laid with more fubtilty and cunning, than that the Devil (after the Light B 2
