ART. 46. A general Syftem of Attack and Defence, with one general Rule for erecting Fortifications, without the circuitous Aid of Trigonometry. By William Jennings. Published under the Patronage of his Excellency the Earl of Hardwicke, Lord-Lieutenant-General, and General Governor of Ireland; Gen. Vallancey, LL. D. M. R. I. A. and Col. Fiber, Chief Engineer. Embellished with an Engraving, exhibiting, at one View, the most material Inftruments used in Fortification and Gunnery. 8vo. 62 pp. 75. Cadell and Co. 1804.

We cannot but think that the title of this book is fomewhat too comprehenfive. Inftead of extending to a general fyftem of attack and defence, it includes little more than the terms of fortification, with fhort definitions fubjoined; and a very general account of the circumftances of a fiege. It is, however, fo fplendidly patronized, that we cannot doubt of its being confidered by those who are very competent to judge, as a work that may be ufetul to bestow elementary knowledge. The rule for erecting fortifications, mentioned in the titlepage, is this.

66 TO ERECT A REGULAR FORTIFICATION, WITHOUT THE AID OF TRIGONOMETRY.

Rule. Divide 360 by the number of its fides, the quotient will be the angle at the centre; which fubtract from 180, and the remainder will be the angle of the polygon.

"The fides of the polygon (on which the fortification is built) ought to be at leaft 250 yards long, in order to keep the baftions the diftance of mufket-fhot from each other.

"Suppole a fortification to have fix fides, divide 360 by 6, the quotient fubtract from 180; the remainder will be the angle of the polygon;

6/360

60 deduct from 180, and the remainder will be 120 degrees, the angle of the polygon; lay off the firit fide, on the mott eligible part, 250 yards long, and lay off the fecond fide the fame length, fo as to make an angle of 120 degrees with the first fide; in the fame manner lay off the third, fourth, fifth, and fixth fides; then lay off the capital 79. yards, the demigorge 52 yards, the flank 48 yards, the face 80 yards: all which being done, at each of the angles, finishes the fortification, when the counterfcarp or outfide of the ditch is drawn, being parallel to the faces of the bastion, 40 yards wide." P. 13.

All this is very eafy, when the form is to be a hexagon, which is doublefs the belt and most common; but if occafion fhould require almolt any other regular polygon, the calculator without trigonometry would foon find himfelf puzzled: and why should not trigonometry be learned?
