TEAR my crying, O God : give ear unto my prayer.

2 From the ends of the earth will I call upon thee : when my heart is in heaviness.

3 O let me up upon the rock that is higher than I : for thou haft been my hope, and a strong tower for me against the enemy:

4 I will dwell in thy tabernacle for ever : and my trust shall be under the covering of thy wings.

5 For thou, O Lord, haft heard my desires : and haft given an heritage unto thufe that fear thy Name.

6 Thou shali grant the King a long life: that his years may endure throughout all generations. 7

He shall dwell before God for ever : O prepare thy loving mercy and faithfulness, that they may preserve him.

8 So will I always sing praise unto thy Name : that I may daily perform my vows.

PRACTICAL OBSERVATIONS. Psalm 1x.) The firft thing observable in this pfalm is, that David lays before God the miseries which had befallen the Israelites; which teaches us, that when nations are exposed to war, and other public calamities, God is the difpenfer of them, to chastise and humble them. 2. David celebrates the power and goodness of God, who had afgifted his people, and given them the victory over their enemies. Thes is God reconciled with men, after he has afficted them; and in particular, disappoints the plots and contrivances of the enemies of his church. Lally, This pfalm teaches us, that the Arength and assistance of man is but vanity, and that there is none but the Lord who can help and deliver us in our distress, and in whom we may fafely and perfe&tly confide.

Pfalm sxi.) I'n chis psalm, we fee David groaning and calling upon the Lord for help; but at the same time, we fee him full of joy and confidence. Such are the dispositions of all those that fear God; they implore his affittance when any dangers thrcates them, and make him their fesure refuge.

Psalm Lxii. Nonne Deo ?
Y soul truly waiteth ftill upon God: for of him

cometh my salvation. 2 He verily is my strength and my salvation : he is my defence, so that I shall not greatly fali.

3 How long will ye imagine mischief against every, man: ye shall be Alain all the sort of you, yea, as a tottering wall shall ye be, and like a broken hedge.

4. Their device is only how co put him out whom God will exalt : their delight is in lies, they give good words with their mouth, but curse with their heart,

5 Nevertheless, my soul, wait thou fill upon God: for my hope is in him.

6 He truly is my strength and my salvation : he is my defence, so that I fhall not fall.

7 In God is my health and my glory: the rock of might, and in God is my trust.

8 O put your trust in him alway, ye people: pour out your hearts before him, for God is our hope.

9 As for the children of men, they are but vanity: the shildren of men are deceitful upon the weights, they are altogether lighcer than vanity itself.

10 O cruit not in wrong and robbery, give not yourselves unto vanity: if riches increase, fet not your heart upon them.

11 God spake once, and twice I have also heard the fame: that power belongeth unto God :

12 And that thou, Lord, art mercifut: for thou rewardest every man according to his work.

PRACTICAL OBSERVATION S. Pfalm lxii.) David teaches us, by his example, 1. That the crue and only way to enjoy uninterropted peace aud tranquility of mind, is to trust in God alone; and that when we depend upon him, we need fear nothing that men can do to us. 2. That it is great blindness to trust in men, who are vanity itself; to set out our heart upon the good things of this wc:11, as become proud and haughty when we abound in then.

God, thou art my God, early will I seek thee.

2 My soul thirsteth for thee, my Aesh also longeth after thee : in a barren and dry land where no water is.

3 Thus have I looked for thee in holiness : that I might behold thy power and glory.

4. For thy loving kindness is better than the life itself : my lips shall praise thee.

15 As long as I live will I magnify thee on this manner : and lift up my hands in thy Name.

6 My foul shall be satisfied even as it were with marrow and fatness : when my mouth praiseth thee with joyful lips.

7 Have I not remembered thee in my bed : and thought upon thee when I was waking?

8 Because thou hast been my helper : therefore under the shadow of thy wings will I rejoice.

9 My soul hangeth upon thee: thy right hand hath upholden me.

20 These also that seek the hurt of my soul : they shall go under the earth.

11 Let them fall upon the edge of the sword : that they may be a portion for foxes.

PRACTICAL OBSERVATIONS. Pfalm Ixiii.] 1. The ardent zeal with which David, when a fugitive and persecuted, desired to enjoy the presence of the Lord in his holy cabernacle, thews, that while we are strangers and sojourners in this world, there is nothing we ought more earneily to desire, than to serve God, to praise him in his house, and to behold his face one day in heaven. 2. The comfort, joy and confidence, which David gives such extraordinary proofs of in this pfalm, most evidently fhew, that the sense of the grace and love of God produces unspeakable joy and satisfaction in the hearts of the faithful, even when they are most ami&ed ; that they fear no evil whilft they are under his protection, and that nothing can disturb or rob them of their peace.

2 Hide me from the gathering together of the froward i and from the insurrection of wicked doers;

3 Who have whet their tongue like a sword : and shoot out their arrows, even bitter words.

4. That they may privily shoot at him that is perfect : suddenly do they hit him, and fear not.

5 They encourage themselves in mischief: and commune among themselves, how they may lay snares, and say, that no man shall see them.

6 They imagine wickedness, and practise it ; that they keep secret among themselves, every man in the depth of his heart.

7 But God shall suddenly shoot at them with a swift arrow: that they shall be wounded.

8 Yea, their own tongues shall make them fall : infomuch that whoso seeth them, shall laugh them to scorn.

9 And all men that see it, shall say, This hath God done : for they shall perceive that it is his work,

10 The righteous shall rejoice in the Lord, and put his trust in him i and all they that are true of heart shall be glad.

Psalm. lxv. Te decet bymnus.
HOU, O God, art praised in Sion: and unto thee

shall the vow be performed in Jerusalem. 2 Thou that hearest the prayer : unto thee shall all felh come.

3 My misdeeds prevail against me : O be thou merciful unto our fins.

PRACTICAL OBSERVATIONS. Plalm Ixiv.) We fee here, how the wicked often 'make use of artifica and deceit to succeed in their designs, and to destroy the innocent; but that God preserves those that call opon him and trust in him, from the snares that are laid for them, and turns the devices of their enemies a their own confufion. This is a doctrine which ought to fill the righteous with joy and confidence, and engage us to adore the goodness, wisdom and jaftice of the Lord, in his proceedings both with good and bad men.

THE COMMON PRAYER, &c. 4 Blefied is the man whom thou choosest, and receiveft unto thee: he ihall dwell in thy court, and shall be satisfied with the pleasures of thy house, even of thy holy temple.

5 Thou falo sew us wonderful things in thy righteoufness, O God of our salvation : thou that art the hope of all the ends of the earth, and of them that remain in the broad fea.

6 Who in his strength settech fast the mountains : and is girded about with power. .7 Who stilleth the raging of the sea : and the noise of his waves, and the madness of the people.

8 They also that dwell in the utiermoft parts of the earth, shall be afraid at thy tokens : chou that makeft the outgoings of the morning and evening to praise thee.

9 Thou visitest the earth, and blefreit ir : thou makeft it very plenteous.

io The river of God is full of water : thou preparest their corn, for so thou providest for the earth.

II Thou waterest her furrows, thou sendest rain into the Jittle valleys thereof : chou makest it soft with the drops of rain, and blesseft the increase of it.

12 Thoù crownest the year with thy goodnefs : and thy clouds drop fatness.

13 They shall drop upon the dwellings of the wilderness : and the little hills shall rejoice on every side.

14 The folds shall be full of sheep: the valleys also fhall stand so thick with corn, that they shall laugh and sing.

PRACTICAL OBSERVATION S. Pfalm Ixv.} This psalm suggests these too instructions: 1. That as God was formerly worshipped in Sion, and there hearkened to the prayers that were offered up to him, he now dwells in his church, and receives favourably the desires of all those that call upon him, pardons their fins, and poureth his benefits upon them. This should convince as bow hapes we are in being members of the church of God, and in the nomber of those whom he has chosen, and for whom he has prepared those com foru of infinite price, which refreth the soul, and produce that fulnels of joy which David here expresses. 2. The next in fruction is, that God geverns the world by his power; and particularly, that he provides met with the necessaries of this life, by making the land fruitful, and caufisg it to produce bread for our fultenance. These reflections (hould convince as of our obligation to celebrate and praise his name, and to thank him, as the author of all the good things we enjoy, and gratefully employ them to his glory.
