T HE first occasion of the ensuing treatise was

the request of a friend, that I would overlook an old book upon this fubje&t, printed in King James I. reign, and would put it into modern English. Which having undertaken, to avoid the tediousness of one continued discourse, without any manner of division, I thought it neceffary to cast mine into several parts, that, at the end of each, the reader might bave 4 breathing-time, and so proceed to what follows with the better appetite. And, in a little time, finding some texts of Scripture not so properly applied as ought to bave been, fome things more largely infifted upon than I apprebend necessary, and many, or the A 2
