In these Readings, or familiar and popular expositions of the Sacred Volume, I feel a very deep interest. am persuaded they are more calculated to do good than anything I have written. They are simple, intelligible, and, by reason of their low price, accessible to all. In explaining the various references, texts, and facts of the Sacred Volume, I have never admitted the consideration, "They will please this party, or displease that party;" hence many will miss their favourite Shibboleths, and be angry; some will see theirs swept away, and be disappointed; but none will find the great and everlasting truths of Christianity either ignored, superseded, or explained away. The latitudinarianism of Jowett and Maurice are repudiated, and thus the "Westminster Review" and their other organs are angry. Romanism of Exeter, and Dr. Pusey, and Mr. Bennet is refuted, and therefore their magazines and reviews are vehement in their assaults. I have no hold of any party, save that, if party it may be called, which looks
