THE BOOK OF PSALMS.

It is not known by whom the Psalms were gathered into a single Book. The Inscriptions or Titles prefixed to many of the Psalms are generally supposed to have been added at different times by unknown persons ; they are of uncertain authority.

But while these unimportant matters are doubtful, the whole Book o Psalms rests upon the surest basis. Its place in the Sacred Canon has never been disputed; and had we not the conviction which is wrought in every spiritual mind by the study of the Book itself, the reverent and abundant use made of the Psalms by the Lord Jesus and the Apostles, would suffice to prove them the work of the Holy Spirit.

The Psalms admit to a certain extent of classification under the heads of praise, adoration, contrition, thanksgiving, and experience; but if they are viewed simply as the utterances of the devotional feelings of the respective writers, their principal characteristic will be lost sight of.
