they have received to bold, as the washing of cups "5 and pots, brazen vefsels, and of tables. Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but 6 eat bread with unwashen (a) hands ? He answered and said unto them, Well hath Efaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far 7 from ine. Howbeit, in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. 8 For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and 9 cups: and many other such like things ye do. And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the com mandment of God, that you may keep your own 10 tradition. For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother : and whoso curseth father or mother, II let him die the death. But ye say, If a man fhall fay to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to fay, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited 12 by me (6): he shall be free. And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother : 13 Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered : and many such like things do ye. 14 And when he had called all the people unto him, he said unto them, Hearken unto me every one of 15 you, and understand. There is nothing from with out a man that entering into him can defile him : but the things which come out of hiin, those are 16 they that (c) defle the man, If any man have ears 17 to hear, let him (2) hear. For from within; out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adul22 teries, fornications, murders, Thefts, covetouf ness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, anevil eye (f), 23 blafphemy, pride, foolishness: All these evil thing3 come from within, and defile the man. 24 And from thence he arose, and went into the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and entered into an house, and would have no man know it; but he could not 25 be hid. For a certain woman, whose young daugh ter had an unclean fpirit, heard of him, and came 26. and fell at his feet: (The woman was (g) a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation) and she besought him that he would căst forth the devil out of her daugh27 ter. But Jesus said unto her, Let the children first be filled : for, it is not meet to take the children's 28 bread, and to cast it unto the dogs. And she an fwered and said unto him, Yes, Lord: yet the dogs under the table eat of the children's crumbs (h). 29 And he said unto her, For this saying, go thy way, (e) The draught which carries off all the dregs and unclean parts of food. (f) An evil eye See Mat. xx. 15. Blasphemy here means evil speaking in general: foolishness is put for all foolish and ungoverned paflions: (8) By a Greek is generally meant a Gentile or Heathen, held in abhorrence by the Jews. This miracle was admirably fuited to cure them of that prejudice. (h) And I hope for only a small share of that bounty which you beltow.so largely on the Jews. . denotes envy. 30 the devil is gone out of thy daughter. And when she was come to her house, she found the devil gone out, and her daughter laid upon the bed. 31 And again departing from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, he came unto the sea of Galilee, through the 32 midst of the coasts of Decapolis. And they that had eaten were about four thousand; and he sent them away. "And straightway he entered into a ship with his disciples, and came into the parts of Dalmanutha (a). 11 And the Pharisees came forth, and began to ques tion with him, feeking of him a sign from heaven, 12 tempting him. And he fighed deeply in his spirit (b), and faith, Why doth this generation seek after a fign? verily I say unto you, There fhall no sign be given 13 to this generation... And he left them, and entering into the ship again, departed to the other fide, 14 Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread, neither had they in the ship with thera more than 15 one loaf. And he charged them, saying, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the (c) Pharisees, and of the 26 leaven of Herod (d). And they reasoned among them 37 selves, faying, .It is because we have nabread. Having eyes, fee ye not? and having 19 ears, hear ye not? and do ye not remember? When I brake the five loaves among five thousand, how (a). And they answered, John the Baptist: but some fay. Elias, and others, One of 29 the prophets. And he faith unto them, But whom fay ye that I am? And Peter answereth and 30 faith unto him, Thou art the Chrift. And he charged them that they should tell no man of him. 31 And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must fuffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests and scribes, and be 32 killed, and after three days rife again. And he spake that saying openly. And Peter took him, and (f) I see some objects, which by their motion I suppose are men. but otherwise I could not distinguish them from trees. (8). As in other miracles our Lord shewed his power by working them instantly, by only fpeaking a word, so here he chofe to work one gradually, with a view perhaps to convince the beholders, that he did not effect thefe wonders by the use of any magieal word or charm, to which, by the fuperftition of the times, some might be difposed to impute them. 33 began |
