: 2 . AN ND he arose from thence, and cometh into the coafts of Judea, by the farther fide of Jordan : and the people resort unto him again ; and, as he was wont, he taught them again.. And the Pharisees came to him, and asked him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife ? tempt3 ing him. And he answered and faid unto them, What did Mofes command you? And they said, Mofes fuffered to write a bill of divorcement, and to 5 put her away. And Jesus answered and said unto them, For the hardness of your heart, he wrote you 6 this precept. . But from the beginning of the crea7 tion, God made thein (a) male and female. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, 8 and cleave to his wife; And they twain shall be one flefh: so then they are no more twain, but one . 9. flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, 10 let not man put afunder. And in the house his dif-II ciples asked him again of the same matter. And he faith unto them, Whofoever fhall put away his wife, and marry (6) another, committeth adultery against And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery. 13 And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them; and his disciples rebuked those 14 that brought them. But when Jefus faw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not : 15 for (c) of such is the kingdom of God. Verily I say unto you, Whosoever thall not receive the king 12 her, (a) See Mat: xix. 4: (6) See Mat. xix. 9. (C) Whosoever will be my difciple, must embrace my doctrine with the purity and fimplicity of a child.. ! dom dom of God as a little child, he fhall not enter 16 therein. And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blefled them. 17 And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good master, what shall I do that I may 18 inherit eternal life? And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good, but one, 19 that is God (d). Thou knoweft the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not (e), Honour 20 thy father and mother. And he answered and said unto him, Mafter, all these have I observed from my youth. 21 Then Jesus beholding him, loved him (5), and said unto him, One thing thou lackeft: go thy way, fell whatfoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven; and come, take 22 up the cross (8) and follow me. And he was fad at ! that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great poffeffions. 23 And Jefus tooked round about, and faith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches 24 (benter into the kingdom of God! And the disciples were astóniched at his words. But Jefus answereth again, and faith unto them, Children, 'how hard is it for them that trust in riches, to enter into the 23 kingdom of God! It is eafier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man (d) See Mat. xix. 17. le) Covet not what belongs to another, so as to use any indirea means to over-reach him and deprive him of it. This is the import of the tenth commandment. Our Lord loved him for having done his duty according to the instructions he had received. See Note on Mat. xix. but he was wordly-minded, and that was the vice that Jesus wished to cure him of, (8) See Mat. x, 38. 26 to enter into the kingdom of God. And they were astonished out of measure, saying among themselves, 27 Who then can be saved? And Jefus looking upon them, faith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible. 28 Then Peter began to say unto him, Lo, we have 29 left all, and have followed thee. And Jesus answered and said, Verily I fay unto you, there is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or fifters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, orlands, for my 30 lake and the gospel's, But he shall receive an hun dred-fold (i) now in this time, houses, and brethren; and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with perfecutions: and in the world to come eternal 31 life. But many that are first, shall be laft: and the laft, firft ..? 32 And they were in the way going up to Jerusalem: and Jesus went before them; and they were amaz, ed: (k), and as they followed, they were afraid. And he took again the twelve, and began to tell them what 33 things should happen unto him; Saying, Behold; we go up to Jerusalem, and the Son of man shali be delivered unto the chief priests, and unto the fcribes; and they shall condemn him to death, and 34 fhall deliver him to the Gentiles; And they shall mock him, and shall scourge : him, and shall spit upon him, and shall kill him; and the third day he shall rise again. 35 And James and John the fons of Zebedee come unto him, saying, Master, we would that thou 36 shouldeft do for us whatsoever we shall defire. And (i) All your fosses shall be made up to you, even in this world, by inward peace and satisfaction of mind, and joy in the Holy Ghost. See Mat. X. 39. Note, xix. 29. Note. And Jesus said unto them, Ye fhall indeed drink of the cup that I drink of: and with the baptism that 40 l-am baptized withal, shall ye be baptized : But to sit on my right hand, and on my left hand, is not mine to give, but it fall be given to them for 41 whom it is prepared. And when the ten heard it, they began to be much displeased with James and 42 John. But Jefus called them to him, and faith unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles, exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon 43 them. But fo shall it not be among you: But who soever will be great among you, shall be your mini44 fter: And whosoever of you will be the chiefeft, 45 shall be fervant of all (m). For even the Son of man came not to be ministred unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. And they came to Jericho: and as he went out of Jericho with his disciples, and a great number of people, blind Bartimeus, the fon of Timeus, fat 47 by the highway side, begging. And they brought the colt to Jesus, and cast their garments on him; and he 8 sat upon him. And many spread their garments in the way: and others cut down branches off the trees, 9 and strawed them in the way. And they that went before, and they that followed, cried, saying, Ho (o) The upper garment of the Jews was loose; which the blind man threw off that he might run the faster. This is called a cloak..
