27 But I say unto you which hear, Love your 28 enemies, do good to them which hate you : Bless

them that curse you, and pray for them which 29 despitefully use you. And unto himn that smiteth

thee on the one cheek, offer also the other : and him

that taketh away- thy cloak, forbid not to take thy 30 coat also (k). Give to cvery man that asketh of

thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods, alk 31 them not again. And, as ye would that men should 32 do to you, do ye also to them likewise. For if yą

love them which love you, what thank have ye? 33 for finners also love those that love them. And if

do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for finners also do even the same. 34 And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive,

what thank have ye? for finners also lend to finners, 35 to receive as much again.

But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again : and your reward shall be great, and ye shall

be the children of the Highest : for he is kind unto 36 the unthankful, and to the evil. Be ye therefore 37. merciful, as your Father also is merciful, Judge

not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not,

and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye 38 shall be forgiven: Give, and it shall be given unto

you; good measure, pressed down, and Thaken together, and running over, shall men give into your (1) bolom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal, it shall be measured to you again.

favour and good word (for fo did the false prophets of old); but wo unto you notwithstanding; you will fall under the displeasure of Almighty God, which you will feel most severely hereafter.

hollow to receive any thing poured into it, is what is called the lap, or bosom.

39 And he spake a parable unto them, (m) Can

the blind lead the blind ? fhall they not both 40 fall into the ditch? The disciple is not above

his master : but every one that is perfect shall 41 be as his master (n). And why beholdelt thou the

mote that is in thy brother's eye, but perceivest 42 not the beam that is in thine own eye (0)? Either

how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdeft not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the bean out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly

to pull out the mote that is in thy brother's eye. 43 For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit :

neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 44 every tree is known by his own fruit : for of

thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble45

bush gather they grapes. A good man, out of the good treasure of his heart, bringeth forth that which is good : and an evil man, out of the evil treasure of his heart, bringeth forth that which is evil : for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

And why call ye me Lord, Lord, and do not the 47 things which I (6) say? Whosoever cometh to me,

and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will 48 Thew you to whom he is like. He is like a man

which' built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and



(m) From this parable, or proverb, our Lord takes occasion to teach his disciples the necessity of carefully attending to the true nature of his religion, in order to inftruét others in it, and of setting an example in their own practice of all those virtues which it is their duty to inculcate.

could not shake it; for it was founded upon a rock. 49 But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man

that without a foundation built an house upon the earth ; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.

INOW when he had ended

all his fayings in the audience of the people, he entered into Capernaum. 2 And a certain centurion's servant, who was dear 3 unto him, was (a) sick and ready to die. And

when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders

of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come 4 and heal his servant. And when they came to Jesus,

they besought him instantly, saying, That he was 5 worthy for whom he should do this : For he loveth 6 our nation, and he hath built us a fynagogue. Then

Jesus went with him. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion fent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not thyself,

for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under 7 my roof. Wherefore neither thought I myself wor

thy to come unto thee : but fay in a word, and my 8 servant fhall be healed. For I also am a (b) man

set under authority, having under me soldiers, and I say unto one, Go, and he goeth: and to another,

Come, and he cometh: and to my feryant, Do 9 this, and he doeth it. When Jesus heard these

things, he marvelled at him and turned him about, and said unto the people that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great (c) faith, no, not

house, found the servant whole that had been sick.

And it came to pass the day after, that he went into a city called Nain; and many of his difciples 12 went with him, and much people. Now when he

came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his

mother, and she was a widow: and much people of 13 the city was with her. And when the Lord saw

her, he had compaffion on her, and faid unto her, 14 Weep not. And he came and touched the bier (and

they that bare him stood still) and he said, Young 15 man, I say unto thee, Arise. And he that was dead,

sat up, and began to speak : and he delivered him 16 to his mother. And there came a fear on all : and

they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up amongst us; and, That God hath (d) visited his people. And this rumour of him went forth throughout all Judea, and throughout all the

region round about. 18 And the disciples of John shewed him of all 19 these things. And John calling unto him two of

his difciples, fent them unto Jesus, saying, Art thou

(e) he that should come, or look we for another? 20 When the men were come unto him, they said, John

Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he 21 that should come, or look we for another? And in

that fame hour he cured many of their infirmities

and plagues, and of evil spirits, and unto many that 22 were blind he gave fight. Then Jesus answering,

faid unto them, Go your way, aud tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind fee, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the

deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gol23 pel is preached. And blessed is he whosoever thall

not be offended in me.

And when the messengers of John were departed, he began to speak unto the people concerning John,

What went ye out into the wilderness for to fee? 25 a reed thaken with the wind ? But what went ye

out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Be

hold they which are gorgeously apparelled, and live 26 delicately, are in kings courts.

But what went ye ont for to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, 27 and much more than a prophet. This is he of

whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger

before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before 28 thee. For I say unto you, Among those that are

born of women, there is not a greater prophet than

() John the Baptist : but he that is least in the 29 kingdom of God, is greater than he. And all the

people that heard him, and the publicans, justified

God (8), being baptized with the baptism of John. 30 But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel

of God against themselves, being not baptized

of him. 31

And the Lord said, Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation ? and to what are they 32 like? They are like unto children (b) fitting in the

market-place, and calling one to another, and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced : we have mourned to you, and

have not 33 wept. For John the Baptist came neither eating

bread, nor drinking wine; and ye say, (i) He hath 34 a devil. The Son of man is come eating and drink

ing; and ye say, Behold, a gluttonous man, and

a wine-bibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. 35 But wisdom is justified of all her children.
