And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, faying, This is my body (i) which is given for you: this do in remembrance of 20 me. Likewise alfo the cup after fupper, faying, This cup is the new teftament in my blood, which is fhed for you.

But behold, the hand of him that betrayeth me 22 is with me on the table. And truly the Son of man goeth as it was determined: but wo unto that man 23 by whom he is betrayed. And they began to enquire among themfelves, which of them it was that fhould do this thing.

And there was also a ftrife among them, which of 25 them should be accounted the greateft. And he faid unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise

And while he yet spake, behold, a multitude, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and drew near unto Jefus, to kifs (u) 48 him. But Jefus faid unto him, Judas, betrayest

(r) Whatever is prophefied concerning me is now going to be fulfilled. My end is near at hand.

(s) What our Lord had fpoken figuratively of preparing for defence, verfe 36, the difciples underflood literally: nor doth he here explain his meaning, but fays, It is enough. There is no need to fay any more about it. And probably he declined to enter into any explanation, from his foreknowledge of the miracle which (by permitting them to take the fwords) he fhould have an opportunity of performing on the ear of Malchus. See Verse 51.

49 thou the Son of man with a kifs? When they which were about him faw what would follow, they faid unto him, Lord, fhall we fmite with the fword? 50 And one of them fmote the fervant of the high-priest, 51 and cut off his right ear. And Jefus anfwered and

faid, Suffer ye thus far (w). And he touched his ear, 52 and healed him. When I was daily with you in the temple, ye ftretched forth no hands against me but this is your hour, and the power of darkness.

Then took they him, and led him, and brought him into the high-prieft's houfe. And Peter followed 55 afar off. And when they had kindled a fire in the

midit of the hall, and were fet down together, Peter 56 fat down among them. But a certain maid beheld

him as he fat by the fire, and earneftly looked upon 57 him, and faid, This man was alfo with him. And

he denied him, faying, Woman, I know him not. 58 And after a little while another (y) faw him, and faid,

Thou art alfo of them. And Peter faid, Man, I 59 am not. And about the fpace of one hour after, another confidently affirmed, faying, Of a truth this fellow alfo was with him; for he is a (z) Gali

(w) This may have been faid to those who had apprehended him, and were, perhaps, then actually confining his hands: and if fo, the meaning must be, give me leave at leaft to do this cure, before carry me away: Or, if it was addreffed to his disciples, it must mean, allow thefe men to do their pleafure: offer no violence in my defence. And if I alfo afk you, you will not anfwer me, nor let me 69 go. Hereafter fhall the Son of man fit on the right 70 hand of the power of God. Then faid they all,

Art thou the Son of God? 71 them (cc), Ye fay that I am. need we any further witnefs? heard of his own mouth.

I AND the whole multitude of them arose, and led him unto Pilate. And they began to accuse him, faying, We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Cefar (a),

(aa) You who pretend to be fo great a prophet, tell who smote

you.

(bb) That is, they ufed many other reviling fpeeches.
