18 He that believeth on him (f), is not condemned: but

he that believeth not, is condemned already, because

he hath not believed in the name of the only-begot19 ten Son of God. And this is the condemnation,

that light is come into the world, and men loved

darkness rather than light, because their deeds were 20 evil. For every one that doeth evil, hateth the light,

neither cometh to the light, left his deeds should be 21 reproved. But he that doeth truth, cometh to the

light, that his deeds may be made manifeft, that they are wrought in God.

After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judea, and there he tarried with them,

and baptized (h). 23

And John also was baptizing in Enon, near to

Salim, because there was much water there : and 24 they came, and were baptized. For John was not

yet cast into prison. 25 Then there arose a question between some of John's 26 disciples and the Jews, about purifying (i). And

they came unto John, and said unto him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond Jordan, to whom thou

barest witness, behold, the fame baptizeth, and all 27 men come to him. John answered and said, A man

can receive nothing, except it be given him from 28 heaven (k). Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I

faid, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him,

(8) To believe on Christ, is to receive his doctrine, and obey his laws, not only to trust in him as our Saviour, but to be governed by him as our Lord. It includes virtuous practice, as well as found faith.

(h) It was not Jesus himself, but his disciples, that baptized. Chap..

(i) The dispute was probably about the superior excellence of Jesus's baptism compared with that of John.

29 He that hath the bride, is the bridegroom : but the

friend of the bridegroom, which ftandeth and hear

eth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom's 30 voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled (1). He must 31 increase, but I must decrease. He that cometh from

above, is above all : he that is of the earth, is earthly,

and speaketh of the earth: be that cometh from 32 heaven, is above all. And what he hath seen and

heard, that he teftifieth ; and no man (m) receiveth 33 his teftimony. He that hath received his testimony, 34 hath fet to his seal, that God is true (n). For he whom

God hath sent, speaketh the words of God: for God 35 giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him (). The

Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things in36 to his hand. He that believeth on the Son, hath

everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son (p), shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth or him.

I WHEN therefore the Lord knew how the Pha

risees had heard that Jesus made and baptized 2 more disciples than John, (Though Jesus himself bap3 tized not, but his disciples) He left Judea, and de4 parted again into Galilee (a). And he must needs go 5 through Samaria. Then cometh he to a city of

Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel 6 of ground that Jacob gave to his Son Jofeph. Now

Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore being wearied.

with his journey, fat thus on the well (6): and it was 7 about the sixth hour(c). There cometh a woman

of Sainaria to draw water: Jesus faith unto her, 8 Give me to drink. For his disciples were gone away 9 unto the city to buy meat. Then faith the woman

of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of

Samaria (d)? for the Jews have no dealings with IO the Samaritans(e). Jesus answered and faid unto her,

If thou knewest the gift of God (f), and who it is that faith to thee, Give me to drink, thou wouldest have

asked of him, and he would have given thee living II water. The woman faith unto him, Sir, thou hail

nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from 12 whence then halt thou that living water? Art thou

greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the

well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, 13 and his cattle? Jesus answered and faid unto her,

Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again : 14

But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall

(c) The fixth hour is noon, and the heat of the day accounts for his being thirfly and wishing to drink.

(d). See the melancholy effects of religious differences, which stop the common intercourse of courtesy and humanity ! for that is what: is meant by dealings.

(e) The Samaritans were defcendants from that mixt multitude, which was sent by Shalmanezer to inhabit those parts from whence he had carried away the Ifraelites, 2 Kings xvii. These at first ferved other gods together with the one, true, living God; and though they were afterwards reformed from their idolatry, and received the five books of Moses, yet, nevertheless, instead of affifting to rebuild the temple at Jerusalem, they built one in opposition to it on Mount Gerizim, and between them and the Jews there was always an irreconcileable hatred.

give him, shall never thirst: but the water that I

Ihall give him, shall be in him a well of water 15 springing up into everlasting life (8). The woman

faith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, 16 neither come hither to draw (h). Jesus faith unto her, 17 Go, call thy husband, and come hither. The wo

man answered and faid, I have no husband. Jesus

said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no 18 husband: For thou haft had five husbands, and he

whom thou now hast is not thy husband : in that said it 19 thou truly (i). The woman faith unto him, Sir, I per26 ceive that thou art a prophet. Our fathers worship

ped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerufalem 21 is the place where men ought to worship. Jefus faith

unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when

ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerufa22 lem, worship the Father (k). Ye worship ye know not

what: we know what we worship: for salvation is 23 of the Jews. But the hour cometh, and now (1) is,

when the true worshippers shall worship the Father

in Spirit and in truth: for the Father feeketh such to 24 worihip him. God is a Spirit, and they that wor

(g) Not such as is kept in cisterns, or drawn up from wells, but which flows in plentiful and perpetual streams, and is most necessary for health and life; for life, I say, not only at present, but for ever.

(h) The woman not yet understanding our blelled Saviour's meaning, he graciously contrives another method to convince her that he was the Christ.

(i) She had probably been divorced from some of the five, according to the practice which then prevailed, and perhaps she was actually in that ftate at this time.

(k) God shall be no longer worshipped in any particular place cxclusively, neither on mount Gerizim, as is done by the Samarilans at prefent, no, nor yet in the temple of Jerusalein, though hicherto'he hath vouchfaféd to place his name there, and expressly appointed the service to be performed; whereas you Samaritans have no such authority for your temple, which was built in direct opposition to the divine command, 10 ferve a political purpose.

In the meanwhile his difciples prayed him, saya 32 ing, Mafter, eat. But he said unto them, I have 33 meat to eat that

know not of. Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him 37 ought to eat? Jefus faith unto them, My meat is to

do the will of him that fent me, and to finish his 35 work. Say not ye, There are yet four months, and

then cometh harveft? Behold, I fay unto you, Lift up

your eyes, and look on the fields ; for they are white 36 already to harvest (n). And he that reapeth, receiveth

wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both

he that soweth, and he that reapeth, may rejoice to37 gether (). And herein is that saving true, Orie fowettir, 38 and another reapeth. I sent you to reap that where

(m) They wondered at our Lord's talking with the woman, for the same reason that he wondered (verse 10.) at his asking a favour of her; because she was a Samaritan.

(n) The usual distance from seed time to harvest is the space of four months; but our fpiritnal harvest is more speedy, for the corn is ripe already, though the seed is but just fown : meaning that his discourse with the woman, had been the happy occasion of bringing a great number of others from that town to hearken to his instructions.

(0) The lower and the reaper have each his reward' from the husbandman for doing his work.
