on ye bestowed no labour : other men laboured, and
ye are entered into their labours (p). 39 And many of the Samaritans of that city believed
on him, for the faying of the woman, which teftified, 40 He told me all that ever I did. So when the Sama
ritans were come unto him, they befought him that
he would tarry with them : and 'he abode there two 41 days. And many more believed, because of his own 42 word: And said unto the woman, Now we believe,
not because of thy saying: for we have heard hiin ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Chrift,
the Saviour of the world.
when he was come into Galilee, the Galileans re-
Jerusalem at the feast: for they also went unto the 46 feast. So Jefus came again into Cana of Galilee,
where he made the water wine. 47
And there was a certain nobleman, whose fon was fick at Capernaum. When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judea into Galilee, he went unto him, and besought him that he would come down,
and heal his son: for he was at the point of death. 48 Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs 49 and wonders, ye will not believe.
bleman faith unto him, Sir, come down ere my 50 child die. Jefus faith unto him, Go thy way;
thy fon liveth. And the man believed the word that
(o) The common proverb, One foweth and another reapeth, is verified in your cafe ; for you are sent into the field to reap, where you have not had the labour of preparing the ground, or sowing the feed.

quired he of them the hour, when he began to
amend: and they said unto him, Yesterday (s) at the: 53 seventh hour the fever left him. So the father knew
that it was at the fame hour, in the which Jesus said.
unto him, Thy son liveth; and himfelf believed, and 54 his whole house. This is again the second miracle
that Jesus did, when he was come out of Judea into Galilee.
FTER this there was a feast of the Jews, and
Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there is at lerusalem by the sheep-market a pool, which is caļled in
the Hebrew tongue, Bethesda (a), having five (b) 3 porches. In these lay a great multitude of impotent
folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the inoving of the water. For an angel (c) went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water
stepped in, was made whole of whatsoever disease he 5
had. And a certain man was there, which had an 6 infirmity thirty and eight years. When Jesus faw
him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time
in that case, he faith unto him, Wilt thou be made 7 whole? The impotent man answered him, Sir, I
have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another

(c) Not that an angel visibly defcended from heaven, but the mi. raculous virtue of the water was ascribed (according to the Jewish way of speaking) to the power of some angel, who was employed by God for that purpose.
8 steppeth down before me. Jesus faith unto him, 9 Rile, take up thy bed and walk. And immediately
the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and
walked : and on the same day was the fabbath. 10
The Jews therefore faid unto him that was cured, It is the fabbath-day: it is not lawful for thee to II carry thy bed. He answered them, He that made
me whole, the same faid unto me, Take up thy bed, 12 and walk (d). Then asked they hini, What man is
that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed and 13
walk ? And he that was healed, wist (e) not who ič
was : for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multi14 tude being in that place. Afterwards Jesus findet
him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, tho:1
art made whole: sin no more, lest a worft thing 15 come unto thee. The man departed, and told the
Jews, that it was Jefus which had made him whole. 16 And therefore did the Jews perfecute Jesus, and fought
to lay him, becaufe he had done these things on the
But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hi18 therto, and I work (f). Therefore the Jews fought
the more to kill him, because he not only had broken
the fabbath, but faid also, that God was his Father, 19 making himself equal with God. Then answered
Jefus, and said unto them, Verily, verily I say unto
(d) He to whom God had given power to work a miraculous cure upon me, would not have ordered me to carry my bed, if it
(e) Wiff not, did not know. Luke ii. 49.
(f) Though the fabbath was by God's own appointment, yet bis providence never ceaseth on that day, as well as at other times, to work in preserving and governing the world, and doing good to his creatures; and it is by his authority and command, that I likewise go about doing good on the labhath-day, as well as at other times.
(8) The Son cannot ałt on a separate interest from the Father ; so far from it, that whatever is done by the Son is by authority from the Father, and tends to promote his glory, Verse 30.
feeth the Father do: for what things soever he do20 eth, these also doeth the Son likewise. For the Fa
ther loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that
himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works 21 than these, that ye may marvel. For as the Father
raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them : even fo 22 the Son quickeneth whom he will. For the Father
judgeth no man; but hath committed all judgment 23 unto the Son: That all men should honour the Son,
even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth
not the Son, honoureth not the Father which hath 24 fent him. Verily, verily I say unto you, He that
heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me,
hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condem25 nation; but is passed from death unto life. Verily,
verily I say unto you, The hour (h) is coming, and
now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the 26 Son of God: and they that hear fhall live. For as
the Father hath life in himfelf; so hath he given to 27 the Son to have life in himself; And hath given him
authority to execute judginent also, because he is the 28 Son of man (i). Marvel not at this : for the hour is
coming, in the which all that are in the graves (k.) 29 shall hear his voice, And shall come forth, they that
have done good, unto the resurrection of life, and
they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of 30 damnation. I can of mine own self do nothing: as !
hear, I judge: and my judgment is just ; because I
(2) The time is near, or rather is come already, when they who are dead in a moral sense, viz. in trefpaffes and sins, frall hearken to the precepts of the Gospel, and by repentance secure to themselves everlasting life.
(2) Because, being the Son of God, he condescended to become the Son of man.
(k) Our blessed Saviour here speaks of those that were naturalty dead, whom he is to call forth from their graves at the day of juegment. Perhaps this may relate likewife to those who were relto, ed to life by our blessed Lord, viz. Lazarus, &c.
seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father
which hath sent me (1). 31
If I bear witness (m) of myself,iny witness is nottrue. 32 There is another that beareth witness of me, and
I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me,
is true. Ye fent unto John, and he bare witness unto 34 the truth. But I receive not testimony from man: 35 but these things I say that ye might be saved. He
was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.
But I have greater witness than that of John : forthe works which the Father hath given me to finish,
the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that 37
the Father hath sent me. And the Father himself which hath fent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye
have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen. 38 his shape. And ye have not his word abiding in you:
for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not (n). 39 Search the scriptures, for in them ye think ye have
eternal life, and they are they which testify of me.. 40
And will not come to me, that ye might have life, 41 I receive not honour from men. But I know (0) you,
have not the love of God in you. I am come my Father's name (D), and ye receive me not : if
another (1) Think not however that my judgment will be partial and arbitrary. It will on the contrary be inost juft and righteous, such as will
prove that I have no other end in view, but to advance the glory and perform the will of God.
(m) If I produced no other evidence than my bare word, I could not expect it to be received: but I can appeal to the holy Spirit of God in the miracles I wrought, that I am come from God. Verse 36. Chap. viii. 18. (n) When
hear his word, ye do not attend to it, so as to retain it in your hearts; and you reject him who is sent to deliver it
(0) Others you may deceive by your pretended piety: but me you cannot, for I know you.
(p) With authority from my Father, as my works shew. Others will come, who can give no such proof of their commission, and you
