8 fteppeth down before me. Jefus faith unto him, 9 Rife, take up thy bed and walk. And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked and on the fame day was the fabbath. 10 The Jews therefore faid unto him that was cured, It is the fabbath-day: it is not lawful for thee to II carry thy bed. He anfwered them, He that made

me whole, the fame faid unto me, Take up thy bed, 12 and walk (d). Then afked they hint, What man is that which faid unto thee, Take up thy bed and 13 walk? And he that was healed, wift (e) not who it was for Jefus had conveyed himself away, a multi14 tude being in that place. Afterwards Jefus findeth him in the temple, and faid unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: fin no more, left a worst thing 15 come unto thee. The man departed, and told the Jews, that it was Jefus which had made him whole. 16 And therefore did the Jews perfecute Jefus, and fought to flay him, becaufe he had done thefe things on the fabbath-day.

17

But Jefus anfwered them, My Father worketh hi18 therto, and I work (f). Therefore the Jews fought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the fabbath, but faid alfo, that God was his Father, 19 making himfelf equal with God. Then anfwered Jefus, and faid unto them, Verily, verily I fay unto you, the Son can do nothing of himself (g), but what he

(d) He to whom God had given power to work a miraculous cure upon me, would not have ordered me to carry my bed, if it Gnful.

(f) Though the fabbath was by God's own appointment, yet his providence never ceaseth on that day, as well as at other times, to work in preferving and governing the world, and doing good to his creatures; and it is by his authority and command,, that I likewife go about doing good on the fabbath-day, as well as at other times.

(g) The Son cannot act on a feparate intereft from the Father ;fo far from it, that whatever is done by the Son is by authority from the Father, and tends to promote his glory, Verfe 30.

feeth the Father do for what things foever he do20 eth, thefe alfo doeth the Son likewife. For the Father loveth the Son, and fheweth him all things that himself doeth and he will fhew him greater works 21 than these, that ye may marvel. For as the Father raifeth up the dead, and quickeneth them: even fo 22 the Son quickeneth whom he will. For the Father judgeth no man; but hath committed all judgment 23 unto the Son: That all men fhould honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son, honoureth not the Father which hath 24 fent him. Verily, verily I fay unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that fent me, hath everlasting life, and fhall not come into condem25 mation; but is paffed from death unto life. Verily, verily I fay unto you, The hour (h) is coming, and now is, when the dead fhall hear the voice of the 26 Son of God: and they that hear fhall live. For as the Father hath life in himfelf; fo hath he given to 27 the Son to have life in himself; And hath given him

authority to execute judgment alfo, becaufe he is the 28 Son of man (i). Marvel not at this: for the hour is

coming, in the which all that are in the graves (k) 29 fhall hear his voice, And fhall come forth, they that have done good, unto the refurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the refurrection of 30 damnation. I can of mine own felf do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is juft; becaufe I

(h) The time is near, or rather is come already, when they who are dead in a moral fenfe, viz. in trefpaffes and fins, fhall hearken to the precepts of the Gospel, and by repentance fecure to themfelves everlasting life.

(i) Becaufe, being the Son of God, he condefcended to become the Son of man.

(k) Our bleffed Saviour here fpeaks of thofe that were naturally dead, whom he is to call forth from their graves at the day of jugment. Perhaps this may relate likewife to those who were restored to life by our bleffed Lord, viz. Lazarus, &c.

feek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath fent me (1).

31 If I bear witnefs (m) of myself, my witness is not true. 32 There is another that beareth witness of me, and I know that the witnefs which he witneffeth of me, 33 is true. Ye fent unto John, and he bare witness unto 34 the truth. But I receive not teftimony from man: 35 but these things I fay that ye might be faved. He was a burning and a fhining light: and ye were will ing for a season to rejoice in his light.

But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish,, the fame works that I do, bear witness of me, that 37 the Father hath fent me. And the Father himself which hath fent me, hath borne witness of me. have neither heard his voice at any time, nor feen. 38 his fhape. And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath fent, him ye believe not (n). Search the scriptures, for in them ye think ye have eternal life, and they are they which teftify of me.. 40 And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life. I receive not honour from men. But I know (o) you, that have not the love of God in you. I am come in my Father's name (p), and ye receive me not: if

() Think not however that my judgment will be partial and arbitrary. It will on the contrary be inoft juft and righteous, fuch as will prove that I have no other end in view, but to advance the glory and perform the will of God.

(m) If I produced no other evidence than my bare word, I could not expect it to be received: but I can appeal to the holy Spirit of God in the miracles I wrought, that I am come from God. Verfe 36. Chap. viii. 18.

(n) When ye hear his word, ye do not attend to it, fo as to retain it in your hearts; and you reject him who is fent to deliver it to you.

(0) Others you may deceive by your pretended piety: but me you cannot, for I know you.

another fhall come in his own name, him ye will re44 ceive. How can ye believe, which receive honour

one of another, and feek not the honour that cometh 45 from God only? Do not think that I will accuse

you to the Father: there is one that accufeth you, 46 even Mofes, in whom ye truft. For had ye believed

Mofes, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of 47 me (q). But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?

CHA P. VI.

A FTER these things Jefus went over the fea of Galilee, which is the fea of Tiberias. And a great multitude followed him, because they faw his miracles which he did on them that were difeafed. And Jefus went up into a mountain, and there he fat with his 4 difciples. And the paflover, a feaft of the Jews, was nigh.

When Jefus then lift up his eyes, and faw a great company coming unto him, he faith unto Philip, Whence fhall we buy bread that these may eat (a) ? 6 (And this he said to prove him (b): for he himself 7 knew what he would do.) Philip answered him, Two

hundred penny-worth of bread (c) is not sufficient

will receive them. They had done fo before the coming of Chrift (Acts v. 36, 37.) and after his death impoftors arose who had many followers.

(4) Though you pretend fo great a veneration for Mofes, you do not in fact believe him; for if you did, you must have received me upon his authority. The Lord thy God will raife up unto thee a prophet like unto me (faith he) unto him ye shall hearken. Deut. xviii. 15. (a) See Mat. xv. 34. Note.:

(b) To raife his attention, and make trial of his faith; for he had before determined with himself what he was about to do.

(c) Two hundred Roman pence (the coin then current among the Jews) at feven-pence halfpenny English, amounted to fix pounds nine fhillings and two-pence: which was probably a larger fum than the difciples were poffeffed of.

for them, that every one of them may take a little. 8.One of his difciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, 9 faith unto him, There is a lad here, which hath

five barley-loaves, and two fmall fifhes: but what are 10 they among fo many? And Jefus faid, Make the men fit down. Now there was much grafs in the place: fo the men fat down, in number about five thousand. II And Jesus took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he diftributed to the difciples, and the difciples to them that were fet down; and likewife of the 12 fishes, as much as they would. When they were filled, he faid unto his difciples, Gather up the frag13 ments that remain, that nothing be loft. Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten. Then thofe men, when they had seen the miracle that Jefus did, faid, This is of a truth that prophet 15 that fhould come into the world. When Jefus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force to make him a king, he departed (d) again 16 into a mountain himself alone. And when even was 17 now.come, his difciples went down unto the fea, And

entered into a ship, and went over the fea towards Capernaum: and it was now dark, and Jefus was not 18 come to them. And the fea arose (e), by reason of 19 a great wind that blew. So when they had rowed

about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they fee Jefus walking on the fea, and drawing nigh unto the 20 fhip and they were afraid. But he faith unto them, 21 It is I, be not afraid. Then they willingly received

(e) The wind being contrary (Mark vi. 48.) they had rowed but three or four miles during the whole night, until the fourth watch, which began at three o'clock in the morning,
