them and said, We know that this is our soil, and 21 and that he was born blind: By what means he now

feeth, we know not; or who hath opened his eyes,

we know not: he is of age, ask him, he shall speak 22 for himself. These words fpake his parents, because

they feared the Jews : for the Jews had agreed alrea

dy, that if any man did confess that he was Christ, 23 he should be put out of the synagogue. Therefore 24 faid his parents, He is of age, ask him. Then again

called they the man that was blind, and said unto him,

Give God the praise (i); we know that this man 25 is a sinner. He answered and said, Whether he be

a finner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that 26 whereas I was blind, now I fee. Then said they to

him again, What did he to thee? how opened he 27 thine eyes? He answered them, I have told you al

ready, and ye did not hear (k): wherefore would ye 28 hear it again ? will ye also be his disciples? Then

they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple ; 29 but we are Moses' disciples. We know that God

spake unto Moses : as for this fellow, we know not 30 from whence he is (?). The man answered and said

unto them, Why, herein is a marvellous thing, that ye

know not from whence he is, and yet he hath opened 31 mine eyes. Now we know tsat God heareth not fin

ners: but if any man be a worihipper of God, and 32 docth his will, liim he heareth. Since the world be

gan was it not heart, that any man opened the eyes 33 of one that was born blind. If this man were not 34 of God, he could do nothing. They anfwered and

and dost thou teach us ? And they cast him out. 35 Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when

Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him? 37 And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, 38 and it is he that talketh with thee. And he said, Lord,

I believe. And he worshipped him. 39 And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this

world ; that they which see not might see; and that 40 they which fee, might be made blind (n). And some

of the Pharisees which were with him heard these 41 words, and said unto him, Are we blind also? Jesus

said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye fay, We fee; therefore your fin remaineth ().

I VERILY, verily.I say unto you, He that entereth

not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth tp some other way, the fame is a thief and a robber. 2 But he that entereth in by the door, is the shepherd 3 of the sheep. To him the porter openeth ; and the

(m) This is on the same principle, on which the disciples, put their question verse 2d, supposing most unreasonably that the infirinities of nature, or misfortunes of life, must be owing to the wickedness of the person.

(n) The effect of my coming into this world is very different according to men's dispositions: the humble and teachable receive benefit from

my instruction, whereas the self-conceited and oblinate do but strengthen themselves the more in their ignorance and perversenefs. See Matt. xiii. 14. Note.

(o) A natural invincible defect in your understanding would be a just excuse: but that is not your case ; for you affect to be wiser than others, and resist all manner of instruction. Your guilt therefore remains in full force upon your heads.

sheep (a) hear his voice: and he calleth his own 4 sheep by name, and leadeth them out. And when

he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them,

and the sheep (6) follow him : for they know his 5. voice. And a stranger will they not follow, but will

flee from him: for they know not the voice of stran6 gers. This parable spake Jesus unto them: but they

understood not what things they were which he fpake 7 unto them. Then said Jesus unto them again, Ve

rily verily, I say unto you (c), I am the door of the 8 sheep. All that ever came before me, are thieves and 9

robbers: but the sheep did not hear them. I am the

door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved (d), 10 and shall go in and out, and find pasture. The thief

cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to de

stroy: I am come that they might have life, and that II they might have it more abundantly. I am the good

shepherd : the goou shepherd giveth his life for the 12 sheep. But he that is an hireling, and not the shep

herd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf

coming, and leaveth the Theep, and fleeth and the 13 wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep. The

hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling (e), and careth

(a) This is meant of the sheepfolds which were hired ty such as brought sheep to fell for facrifice, and which the porter or keeper of the fold, would not open to any but the right owner of the sheep, when they were to be led out.

(6) The sheep in Judea, and throughout all the eastern part of the world, are more familiar and tractable than with us; and instead of being driven by the shepherd before him, are used to follow. . him when called, as our dogs do their master.

(c) Here our blessed Saviour begins a more general comparison. (d) He shall be kept safe, as sheep are kept by a careful shepherd.

le) This is a natural description of the carelessness of servants in defending their master's property; who, when any difficulty occurs, are too apt to forsake their charge, to provide for their own safety and advantage. The passage may be juftly urged againft careless pastors, who attend only to their own cafe and profit; but it ought not to be applied to such as do their duty to the flock, It cannot

14 not for the sheep. I am the good shepherd, and know 15 my sheep, and am known of mine. As the Father

knoweth me, even fo know I the Father : and I lay 16 down my life for the sheep. And other theep I have,

which are not of this fold: them also I must bring,

and they shall hear my voice; and there Thall be one 17 fold, and one shepherd (f). Therefore doth my Father

love me, because I lay down my life, that I might 18 take it again. No man taketh it from me, but I lay it

down of myself: I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment

have I received of my Father. 19

There was a divifion therefore again among the Jews 26 for these sayings. And inany of them faid, He hath a 21 devil, and is mad, why hear ye him (8) ? Others

And it was at Jerusalem the feast of the dedication (b), and it was winter. And Jesus walked in the 24 temple in Solomon's porch. Then came the Jews

believed not: the works that I do in my Father's 26 name, they bear witness of me.

believé not; because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you. 27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they 28 follow me. And I give unto them eternal life, and

they shall (i) never perish, neither shall any pluck be an objection that they receive a reward for their labour; they having a right to it by appointment of the great shepherd of souls. Luke x. 7. 1 Cor. ix. 13, 14.

(1) By this is meant, that Christ would admit the Gentiles to equal privileges of his covenant with the Jews. (g) See Matt. xi. 18.

(h) This feast was kept in remembrance of the cleansing of the temple, and setting up of a new altar by Judas Maccabeus, after the profanation of Antiochus king of Syria. See 1 Mac. iv. 56. 2 Mac.

blasphemy, and because that thou, being a man, mak34 est thyself God. Jesus answered them, Is it not written 35 in your law (1), I said, Ye are gods. If he called them

gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the 36 Icripture cannot be broken : Say ye of him, whom

the Father hath fanétified, and sent into the world,

Thou blafphemeft; because I said, I am the Son of 37 God? If I do not the works of my Father, believe 38 me not. But if I do, though ye believe not me, be

lieve the works: that ye may know and believe that 39 the Father is in me, and I in him. Therefore they

fought again to take him; but he escaped out of 40 their hand, And went away again beyond Jordan,

into the place where John at first baptized; and there 41 he abode. And many resorted unto him, and said,

John did no miracle : but all things that John spake 42 of this man were true. And

many

believed on him there.

(k) I and my Father are in this refpcét the same.

(2) If the fcripture, which cannot be broken, that is, cannot be contradicted, (Pj. lxxxii. 6.) calls judges and rulers of the people, Gods, and children of the most High, only because they act by commission from God; can ye charge him with blasphemy, to whom the Father hath given the divine Spirit without measure, Chap. iii. 34. and hath sent him into the world for the noblest of all purposes, even the redemption and salvation of men ? I am that person; and bave I not a right to call myself the Son of God, being indeed ia the highest fenle bis honourable, true, and only Sun? Chap.i. 27.
