I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation : but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.

I THESE words spake Jesus.; and lift up his eyes

to heaven, and said, Father the hour is come (a); glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee (b), 2 As thou hast given him power over all felh, that he

should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given 3 him. And this is life eternal, that they might know

thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom thou 4 haft fent. I have glorified thee on the earth: I have

finished the work which thou gavest me to do. 5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own

self, with the glory which I had with thee before the 6 world was. I have manifested thy name unto the

men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine

they were, and thou gavest them me ; and they have 7 kept thy word. Now they have known that all things 8 whatfoever thou hast given me, are of thee (c). For I

have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known (w) Though forsaken by alt of you, I shall have the support of heavenly Father's presence.

(a) Our blessed Saviour, having forewarned his Apostles what they were to suffer on account of their preaching the Gospel, and likewise informed them of the affistance they should receive from the holy Spirit, concludes with this fervent and affecting prayer, immediately before he went to the place where he knew that he was to be betrayed and apprehended.

(6) Glorify me with thy heavenly support in my fufferings, that they may effe&tually promote thy glory in the conversion and salvation of men,

I am not of the world. I pray not that thou Thouldest take them out of the world, but that thou 16 shouldest keep them from the evil. They are not 17 of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify 18 them through thy truth (g); thy word is truth. As

thou hast fent ine into the world, even so have I also 19 fent them into the world. And for their fakes I sanc

(d) I pray not at this time for the unbelieving world, but for these thy peculiar servants, to whom thou hast given grace to become my disciples, and for all who shall believe on me in future times. See Verse 20.

(e) That they may be united in affection, and all teach the fame doĉtrine; as I have set them the example, by delivering nothing but what was thy divine will, to which I have likewise in all things invariably conformed.

(f) In thy name, i. e. for thee, by the commission and authority thou hast given me. Thus the passages in Psalm 1xix. and cix. are fulfilled by a similar

tify myself (h), that they also inight be fanctified 20 through the truth. Neither pray I for these alone,

but for them also which shall believe on me through 21 their word: That they all may be one, as thou,

Father, art in me, and I in thee; that they also may

be one in us (i): that the world may believe that thou 22 haft fent me. And the glory which thou gaveft

me, I have given them : that they may be one, even 23 as we are one. I in them, and thou in me, that they

may be made perfect in one, and that the world may

know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, 24 as thou hast loved me. Father, I will that they also

whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am ; that they may behold my glory which thou hait

given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation 25 of the world. Orighteous Father, the world hath

not known thee; but I have known thee, and these 26 have known that thou hast fent me. And I have

declared unto them thy name, and will declare it :. that the love where with thou hast loved me, may be in them, and I in them.

! HEN Jesus had spoken these words, he went

forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden (a),. into the which he entered, 2 and his disciples.. And Judas also which betrayed

him, knew the place: for Jesus oft times reforted thi3 ther with his disciples.. Judas then having received a

band of men, and officers from the chief priests and

(a) This place was at the foot of the Mount of Olives. Luke xxii. 39. and called Gethsemane. Matt. xxvi. 36. Mark xiv. 26, 32.

Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns, and torches, 4 and weapons. Jesus therefore knowing all things that

should come upon him (b), went forth, and said unto 5 them, Whom seek ye? They answered him, Jesus of

Nazareth. Jesus faith unto them, I am he. And Judas 6 also which betrayed him, stood with them. As soon

then as he had said unto them, I am he (c), they 7 went backward, and fell to the ground. Then asked

he them again, Whom seek ye? And they faid, Je8 sus of Nazareth. Jesus answered, I have told you that I am be. If therefore

ye

feek me, let these go 9 their way (d): That the saying, might be fulfilled

which he spake, Of them which thou gaveft me, 10 have I loft none. Then Simon Peter having a sword,

drew it, and smote the high-priest's servant, and cut

off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus. 1 Then faid Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into

the sheath: the cup (e) which my Father hath given 12 me, shall I not drink it? Then the band, and the

captain, and officers of the Jews, took Jesus, and 13 bound him, And led him away to Annas first (f) (for

(6) With full knowledge of all that was to befal him, he stept forward, resolved to deliver himself up to them.

(c) Struck with amazement at his courage and greatness of mind, and sung in their conscience with the wickedness they were engaged in, they

fell to the ground. (d) Observe his love to his disciples. He is anxious for their safety, whilft he voluntarily exposed his own life to the malice of his enemies.

(e) In ancient times, the master of a family used to distribute to his children and servants a certain separate allowance of meat and drink for each by himself, differing in quantity and quality, according to their merít.

The same custom likewise was observed in entertaining guests. Gen. xlii. 32. In allufion to this custom, the word Cup is used for the dispensations of providence ; Almighty God, as our common Master and Father, appointing to every one his respective share of good and evil.

() By the law of Moses, the high-priest was to continue in office for life : but it had been, notwith Nanding, the custom long before our Saviour's time, to appoint a new one every year. See Luke iij, 2. Note,

he was father-in-law to Caiaphas, which was the high14 priest- that same year). (8) Now Caiaphas was

he which gave counsel to the Jews,' that it was expe-dient that one man should die for the people.

And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. That disciple was known unto the

high-priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace 16 of the high-priest. But Peter stood at the door with

out. Then went out that other difciple which was

known unto the high-priest, and spake unto her that 17 kept the door, and brought in Peter. Then faith the

damsel that kept the door unto Peter, Art not thou

also one of this man's disciples? He saith, I am not. 18 And the servants and officers stood there, who had

made a fire of coals (for it was cold); and they warmed themselves : and Peter stood with them, and

warmed himself. 19 The high-priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, , 20 and of his doctrine. Jesus answered him, I spakte

openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue,

and in the temple, whither the Jews always refort, 21 and in secret have I said nothing (b). Why asketh thou

me? ask them which heard me, what I have said un22 to them : behold, they know what I said. And when

he had thus spoken, one of the officers, which stood

by, struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, 23 Answerest thou the high-priest fo? Jesus answered

him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil (i): (g) Thus did they drag about the Saviour..of the world, hound like a malefactor, first to Annas, then to Caiaphas, 'verse 24. then to Pilate, then to Herod, then to Pilate again. It is no wonder, considering the cruelties he fuffered from them all, that he was anable to carry his crofs.

() Í have held no secret cabals, and I have said nothing that I am unwilling should be known publickly.

(1) Shew me what law I have offended againd, and try me for it legally: but if I have said nothing unbecoming, why am I thus treated ?
