DISPENSATION.

Gen. iv, 3. 4. And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD. And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering.

Gen. vill, 20. And Noah builded an altar unto the LORD; and took of every clean beast, and of every clean fowl, and offered burnt offerings on the altar.

Gen. xxil, 13. And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son.

Gen. xxxi, 54. Then Jacob offered sacrifice upon the mount, and called his brethren to eat bread: and they did eat bread, and tarried all night in

SACRIFICES.

he brought him into the field of Zophim, to the top of Pisgah, and built seven altars, and offered a bullock and a ram on every altar. And Balaam said unto Balak, Build me here seven altars, and prepare me here seven bullocks and seven rams. And Balak did as Balaam had said, and offered a bullock and a ram on every altar.

Heb. xi, 4. By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts; and by it he, being dead, yet speaketh.

UNDER THE MOSAIC DIS-
PENSATION.

ONLY ONE PLACE OF SACRIFICE. Exod. xxix, 11. And thou shalt kill the bullock before the LORD, by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

Lev. xvii, 2-5, 8, 9. Speak unto Aaron, and unto his sons, and unto all the children of Israel, and say unto them, This is the thing which the LORD hath commanded, saying, What man soever there be of the house of Israel that killeth an ox, or lamb, or goat in the camp, or that killeth it out of the camp, And bringeth it not unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, to offer an offering unto the LORD before the tabernacle of the LORD, blood shall be imputed unto that man; he hath shed blood; and that man shall be cut off from among his people: To the end that the children of Israel may bring their sacrifices which they offer in the open field,even that they may bring door of the tabernacle of the conthem unto the LORD, unto the pre-offer them for peace-offerings ungregation, unto the priest, and to the LORD. And thou shalt say unto them, Whatsoever man there be of the house of Israel, or of the strangers which sojourn offering or sacrifice, And bringeth among you, that offereth a burntit not unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, to offer it unto the LORD, even that man shall be cut off from among his people.

Thou mayest not eat within thy gates the tithe of thy corn, or of thy wine, or of thy oil, or the firstlings of thy herds, or of thy flock, nor any of thy vows which thou vowest, nor thy free-will offerings, or heaveofferings of thine hand: But thou must eat them before the LORD thy God in the place which the LORD thy God shall choose, thou, and thy son, and thy daughter, and thy man-servant, andthymaidservant, and the Levite that is within thy gates:and thou shalt rejoice before the LORD thy God in all that thon puttest thine hands unto.

Num. xxix, 39. These things yes shall do unto the LORD in your set feasts, besides your vows, and Exod. xxiv, 5. will come down now upon me to Gilgal, and I have not made supplication unto the LORD; I forced myself therefore, and offered a burnt-offering.

Ps. iv, 5. Offer the sacrifices of in the LORD. righteousness, and put your trust

Ps. 1, 5. Gather my saints together unto me; those that have made a covenant with me by

Ps. 11, 19. Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, with burnt-offering, and whole burnt offering: then shall they offer bullocks upon thine altar.

and without beast. The voice... of them that shall bring the sacrifice of praise into the house of the LORD. For I will cause to return the captivity of the land, as at the first, saith the LORD.

Micah vi, 6, 7. Wherewith shall I come before the LORD, and bow mys. If before the high God? shall I come before him with burntofferings, with calves of a year old? Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, or with

ten thousands of rivers of oil?

shall I give my first-born for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?

Ps. 11, 17. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

Rom. xii, 1. I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

Ps. cvil, 22. And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, Heb. xiii, 10, 15. 16. We have an and declare his works with rejoic-altar, whereof they have no right ing.

Ps. cxvili, 27. God is the LORD, which hath shewed us light: bind the sacrifice with cords, even unto the horns of the altar.

Isa. xliii. 23, 24. Thou hast not

brought me the small cattle of thy honoured me with thy sacrifices: burnt-offerings, neither hast thou

THE TOKEN OF DEVOTION, bought me no sweet cane with money, neither hast thou filled me with the fat of thy sacrifices; but thou hast made me to serve with thy sins, thou hast wearied me with thine iniquities.

Lev. vil, 38. Which the LORD commanded Moses in mount Sinai, in the day that he commanded the children of Israel to offer their oblations unto the LORD, in the wilderness of Sinai.

Lev. ix, 4-6. Also a bullock and a ram for peace-offerings, to sacrifice before the LORD; and a meat- offering mingled with oil: for to-day the LORD will appear unto you. And they brought that which Moses commanded before the tabernacle of the congregation; and all the congregation drew near, and stood before the LORD. And Moses said, This is the thing which the LORD commanded that ye should do; and the glory of the LORD shall appear unto you.

Num. xxviii, 2. Command the children of Israel, and say unto them, My offering, and my bread for my sacrifices made by fire, for a sweet savour unto me, shall ye observe to offer unto me in their due season.

Isa. Ix, 7. All the flocks of Kedar shall be gathered together unto thee, the rams of Nebaioth shall minister unto thee: they shall come up with acceptance on mine altar, and I will glorify the house of my glory.

Jer. xvii, 26. And they shall come from the cities of Judah, and from the places about Jerusalem, and from the land of Benjamin, and from the plain, and from the mountains, and from the south, bringing burnt offerings, and sacrifices, and meat-offerings, and incense, and bringing sacrifices of praise, unto the house of the LORD.

to eat which serve the tabernacle. By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name. But to do good and to communicate forget not; for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.

BUT NEVER A SUBSTITUTE FOR
OBEDIENCE.

1 Sam xv, 22. And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt-offerings, and sacrifices as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.

Ps. 1, 7-14. Hear, O my people, and I will speak; O Israel, and I will testify against thee: I am God, even thy God. I will not reprove thee for thy sacrifices, or thy burnt-offerings, to have been continually before me. I will take no bullock out of thy house, nor he-goats out of thy folds: For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills. I know all the fowls of the mountains; and the wild beasts of the field are mine. It I were hungry, I would not tell thee: for the world is mine, and the fulness thereof. Will I eat the flesh of bulls, or drink the blood of goats? Offer unto God thanksgiving; and pay thy vows lligh.

uuto the Lost

Jer. xxxii, 10, 11. Thus saith the LORD, Again there shall be heard in this place, which ye say shall be desolate without man and Ps. li, 16. For thou desirest not without beast, even in the cities sacrifice else would I give it; of Judah, and in the streets of thou delightest not in burnt-offerJerusalem, that are desolate, with-ing. out man, and without inhabitant, [ Ps. Ixix, 80, 81. I will praise the

name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving. This also shall please the LORD better than an ox or bullock that hath horns and hoofs.

Prov. xxi, 3. To do justice and Judgment is more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice.

Isa. i, 11, 12. To what purpose is the multitude or your sacrifices

unto me? saith the LORD: I am full of the burnt-offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of hegoats. When ye come to appear before me, who hath required this at your hand, to tread my

courts?

Jer. vil, 21, 22. Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Put your burnt-offerings unto your sacrifices, and eat flesh. For I spake not unto your fathers, nor commanded them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt-offerings or sacrifices.

Hosea vi, 6. For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt-offerings.

Matth. xii, 7. But if ye had known what this meanethi, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemued the guiltless.

NOT ACCEPTED WHEN NOT OFFERED IN THE RIGHT SPIRIT. Lev. xxvi, 31. And I will make your cities waste, and bring your sanctuaries unto desolation, and I will not smell the savour of your Sweet odours.

Prov. xv, 8. The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD: but the prayer of the upright is his delight.

Prov. xxi, 27. The sacrifice of

the wicked is abomination: how

much more when he bringeth it

with a wicked mind?

Isa. Ixvi, 3. He that killeth an ox is as if he slew a man; he that Bacrificeth a lamb, as if he cut off a dog's neck; he that offereth an oblation, as if he offered swine's blood; he that burneth incense, as if he blessed an idol. Yea, they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delighteth in their

abominatious.

Hosea vili, 13. They sacrifice flesh for the sacrifices of mine offerings, and eat it; but the LORD accepteth them not: now will he remember their iniquity, and Visit their sins; they shall return to Egypt.

Amos v, 22. 25. Though ye offer me burnt-offerings, and your meatofferings, I will not accept them:

Dan. viii, 11, 12. Yea, he magnifled himself even to the prince of the host, and by him the daily sacrifice was taken away, and the place of his sanctuary was cast down. And an host was given him against the daily sacrifice by reason of transgression, and it cast down the truth to the ground; and it practised, and prospered.

Dan. xi, 31. And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate.

Joel 1, 9, 13. The meat offering and the drink offering is cut off from the house of the LORD; the priests, the LORD'S ministers, mourn. Gird yourselves, and lament, ye priests; howl, ye ministers of the altar; come, lie all night in sackcloth, ye ministers of my God: for the meat offering and the drink offering is with

Lev. ix, 1-3. And it came to pass on the eighth day, that Moses called Aaron and his sons, and the elders of Israel; And he said unto Aaron, Take thee a young calf for a sin-offering, and a ram for a burnt-offering, without blemish, and offer them before the LORD. Lev. xxii, 19. Ye shall offer at your own will a male without blemish, of the beeves, of the sheep, or of the goats.

BIRDS.

Lev. i, 14-17. And if the burntsacrifice for his offering to the LORD be of fowls, then he shall bring his offering of turtle-doves, or of young pigeons. And the priest shall bring it unto the altar, and wring off his head, and burn thereof shall be wrung out at the it on the altar: and the blood side of the altar. And he shall

pluck away his crop with his feathers, and cast it beside the altar, on the east part, by the place of the ashes. And he shall cleave it with the wings thereof, but shall not divide it asunder: and the

THEIR QUALIFICATIONS. hath a blemish, that shall ye not Lev. xxii, 20-27. But whosoever offer; for it shall not be acceptable for you. And whosoever offereth a sacrifice of peace-offerings unto the LORD, to accomplish his vow, or a free-will-offering in beeves or sheep, it shall be perfect to be accepted: there shall be no blemish therein. Blind, or broken, or maimed, or having a wen, or scurvy, or scabbed, ye shall not offer these unto the LORD, nor

make an offering by fire of them upon the altar unto the LORD. Either a bullock or a lamb that hath any thing superfluous or lacking in his parts, that mayest thou offer for a free-will-offering; but for a vow it shall not be accepted. Ye shall not offer unto the LORD that which is bruised, or crushed, or broken, or cut; neither shall ye make any offering thereof in your land. Neither from a stranger's hand shall ye offer the bread of your God of any of these; because their corruption is in them, and blemishes be in them: they shall not be accepted for you, And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, When a bullock, or a sheep, or a goat, is brought forth, then it shall be seven days under the dam; and from the eighth day and thenceforth it shall be accepted for an offering made by fire

unto the LORD.

Deut. xvii, 1. Thou shalt not sacrifice unto the LORD thy God any bullock or sheep wherein is blemish, or any evil-favouredness: for that is an abomination unto the LORD thy God.

MEAT OFFERING. FOR PRIESTS. Lev. vi. 20-23. This is the offering of Aaron, and of his sons, which they shall offer unto the LORD in the day when he is anointed; the tenth part of an ephah of fine flour for a meatoffering perpetual; half cf it in the morning, and half thereof at night. In a pan it shall be made with oil; and when it is baken, thou shalt bring it in: and the baken pieces of the meat-offering shalt thou offer for a sweet savour unto the LORD. And the priest of his sons that is anointed in his stead, shall offer it: it is a statute for ever unto the LORD; it shall be wholly burnt: For every meatoffering for the priest shall be wholly burnt: it shall not be eaten.

FOR PEOPLE.

Exod. xxix, 23. And one loaf of bread, and one cake of oiled bread, and one wafer out of the basket of the unleavened bread that is before the LORD.

Lev. il, 1-9,14-16. And when any will offer a meat-offering unto the LORD, his offering shall be of fine flour; and he shall pour oil upon it, and put frankincense thereon. And

he shall bring it to Aaron's sons the
priests, and he shall take thereout
his handful of the flour thereof, and
of the oil thereof, with all the frank-
incense thereof; and the priest shall
burn the memorial of it upon the
altar, to be an offering made by fire,
of a sweet savour unto the LORD.
And the remnant of the meat-
offering shall be Aaron's and his
sons'; it is a thing most holy of
the offerings of the LORD, made by
fire. And if thou bring an obla-
tion of a meat-offering baken in
the oven, it shall be unleaven
cakes of fine flour mingled with
oil, or unleavened wafers anointed
with oil. And if thy oblation be
a meat-offering baken in a pan, it
shall be of fine flour unleavened,
mingled with oil. Thou shalt part
it in pieces, and pour oil thereon:
it is a meat-offering. And if thy
oblation be a meat-offering baken
in the frying-pan, it shall be made
of fine flour with oil. And thou
shalt bring the meat-offering that
is made of these things unto the
LORD: and when it is presented
unto the priest, he shall bring it
unto the altar. And the priest
shall take from the meat-offering
a memorial thereof, and shall burn
it upon the altar: it is an offering
unto the LORD. And if thou offer
made by fire, of a sweet savour
a meat-offering of thy first-fruits
for the meat-offering of thy first
unto the LORD, thou shalt offer,
fruits, green ears of corn dried by
the fire, even corn beaten out of
full ears.
And thou shalt put oil
upon it, and lay frankincense
thereon: it is a meat-offering. And
the priest shall burn the memorial
of it, part of the beaten corn
thereof, and part of the oil there-
of, with all the frankincense there-
of: it is an offering made by fire
unto the LORD.

Lev. v, 11, 12. But if he be not
able to bring two turtle-doves,
or two young pigeons; then he
that sinned shall bring for his of-
fering the tenth part of an ephah
of fine flour for a sin-offering: he
shall put no oil upon it, neither
thereon; for it is a sin-offering,
shall he put any frankincense

If he offer it for a thanks Fiving, then he shall offer with the sacrifice of thanksgiving unleav ened cakes mingled with oil, and unleavened wafers anointed with oil, and cakes mingled with oil, of fine flour, fried. Besides the cakes, he shall offer for his of fering leavened bread with the sacrifice of thanksgiving of his peace-offerings. And of it he shall offer one out of the whole oblation for an heave-offering unto the LORD, and it shall be the priest's that sprinkleth the blood of the peace-offerings.

Lev. vill, 26 And out of the basket of unleavened bread, that was before the LORD, he took one unleavened cake, and a cake of oiled bread, and one wafer, and put them on the fat, and' upon the right shoulder.

Lev. ix, 17. And he brought the ful thereof, and burnt it upon the meat-offering, and took an handaltar, beside the burnt-sacrifice of

the morning.

Num. xv, 2-4. 6. 8, 9, 19-21. Speak unto the children of Israel, and into the land of your habitations, say unto them, When ye be come which I give unto you, And will make an offering by fire unto the LORD, a burnt-offering, or a sacrifice in performing a vow, or in a free-will-offering, or in your solemn feasts, to make a sweet savour unto the LORD, of the herd, or of the flock; Then shall he that offereth his offering unto the LORD bring a meat-offering of a tenthdeal of flour, mingled with the fourth part of an hin of oil. Or for a ram, thou shalt prepare for a meat-offering two tenth-deals of flour, mingled with the third part of an hin of oil. And when thou preparest a bullock for a burnt-offering or for a sacrifice in performing a vow, or peace-offerings, with a bullock a meat-offering of unto the LORD; Then shall he bring three tenth-deals of flour, mingled with half an hin of oil. Then it shall be, that, when ye eat of the bread of the land, ye shall offer up an heave offering unto the LORD. Ye shall offer up a cake of the first of your dough for an heave-offering: as ye do the heave offering of the threshing-floor, so your dough ye shall give unto the shall ye heave it. Num. xxviii, 5. 12, 13. And a tenth part of an ephah of flour for a meat-offering, mingled with the fourth part of an hin of beaten

Ezek. xlv, 24, 25. And he shall prepare a meat-offering of an ephah for a bullock, and an ephah for a ram, and an hin of oil for an ephah. In the seventh month, in the fifteenth day of the month, shall he do the like in the feast of the seven days, according to the sin-offering, according to the burnt-offering, and according to the meat-offering, and according to the oil.

And thou shalt bring for a drinkoffering half an hin of wine, for an offering made by fire, of a the LORD. sweet savour unto Thus shall it be done for one bullock, or for one ram, on for a lamb, or a kid. According to the number that ye shall prepare, so shall ye do to every one, according to their number. All that are born of the country shall do these things after this manner, in offering an off ring made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD.

SALT INDISPENSABLE.

Lev. ii, 13. And every oblation of thy meat-offering shalt thou season with salt; neither shalt thou suffer the salt of the covenant of thy God to be lacking from thy meat-offering: with all thine offerings thou shalt offer salt.

LEAVEN AND HONEY FORBIDDEN.

Exod. xxiii, 18. Thou shalt not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leavened bread; neither shall the fat of my sacrifice remain until the morning.

Exod. xxxiv, 25. Thou shalt not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leaven; neither shall the sacrifice of the feast of the passover be left unto the morning.

Lev. i, 11. No meat-offering, which ye shall bring unto the LORD, shall be made with leaven: for ye shall burn no leaven, nor any honey, in any offering of the LORD made by fire.

Lev. vi, 17. It shall not be baken with leaven: I have given it unto them for their portion of my offerings made by fire; it is most holy, as is the sin-offering, and as the trespass-offering.

DIFFERENT KINDS OF

SACRIFICE. BURNT-OFFERING. Exod. xxix, 18, 25. And thou shalt burn the whole ram upon the altar: it is a burnt-offering unto the LORD: it is a sweet savour, an offering made by fire unto the LORD. And thou shalt receive them of their hands, and burn them upon the altar for a burnt-offering, for a sweet savour before the LORD: it is an offering made by fire unto the LORD.

Lev. vi. 9. Command Aaron and his sons, saying. This is the law Num. xxviil, 7. 14.
