and I can but pray that the Lord himself will speak to your soul, and make you His own child, a true member of that body of which Jesus Christ is the Head—a branch of that vine of which He is the Root—a lamb of that flock of which he is the Shepherd-and an heir of that kingdom which He has purchased for those who love Him.

This book is for you, dear boy; and I desire to thank my God, that He has permitted me to consecrate to His glory the poor talent with which he has entrusted me; and more especially that he has made me the willing servant of those who labour for the diffusion of religious knowledge, where the entrance of his word giveth light among our fellow-subjects, too long shrouded in the thick darkness of ignorance and superstition. Before your dear Papa had been five weeks in Ireland, he became a voluntary helper in the glorious work: and how much of valuable good might be done, if all whose duty, or business may call them to explore the land,

would follow his example, furnishing themselves with the means to scatter bread-the bread of the waters;-among the multitudes

who perish for lack of knowledge. The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: and if

a cup of cold water given in the name of a disciple cannot lose its reward, how rich shall be the recompense of those who zealously work the works of God-the recompense of seeing Him. glorified in the salvation of many souls, in that day when he that soweth, and he that reapeth shall rejoice together!

I can truly say that, "out of much affliction and anguish of heart, I wrote unto you with many tears;" but though I go on my way weeping, I trust, by the rich mercy of my God that I am commissioned to bear forth the good seed of divine truth; and so doing I shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing my sheaves with me. And if the Lord grant my prayer, you my child will be a faithful witness before Him, a labourer in His vineyard, and a pastor in his fold.

THE

TWO SERVANTS.

In the days of Jehoram, king of Israel, there was a man of God, a prophet named Elisha, who received power from the Lord to perform many wonderful works. He was upright in the midst of a "crooked and perverse nation," serving the Lord his God with all his heart, and mind, and strength. He had that faith which our blessed Saviour speaks of, when he that the man who possesses it, may say to a mountain, "Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea," and it shall be done. Whatever Elisha performed, he did in the name of the Lord, relying on his power alone. He never undertook any thing, but what he knew was according to the

Lord's will, and for his glory. The fame of his extraordinary works soon spread throughout the land of Israel; and in the city of Samaria, where he dwelt, we may suppose that no one could be ignorant of his holiness and great works.

At the time when he lived, the king of Syria, was at war with the king of Israel, and had sent his armies to invade Israel. They took away many of the people captives; and, among others, a little maid, who afterwards was taken to wait, on the wife of Naaman, one of the chief men of the king of Syria. Now this Naaman was a mighty man, a great warrior, and very much in favour with his master, and was, of course, rich and powerful. But there was one thing that interrupted all his happiness; he was a leper. The leprosy is a disease which covers the whole body from head to foot, with a white crust: it is loathsome and painful, and, what is worse, cannot be cured by any human physician. Naaman would have been glad, no doubt, to have given half his wealth, or
