Ifaac infruited by Rebekah, Chap. xxvij. 2 And he faid, Behold, now I am old, I know not the day of my death. 3 Now therefore take, I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver, and thy bow, and go but to the field, and take me fome venifon; 4 And make me favoury meat, fuch as love, and bring it to me, that I may eat that my foul may bless thee before I die. SAnd Rebekah heard when Ifaac fpake to Efau his fon and Efau went to the field to hunt for venifon, and to bring it. 69 And Rebekah fpake unto Jacob her fon, laying, Behold, I heard thy father speak anto Efau thy brother, faying, 7 Bring me venifon, and make me favoury meat, that I may eat, and bless thee before the LORD, before my death. 8 Now therefore, my fon, obey my voice, according to that which I command thee. 9 Go now to the flock, and fetch me from thence two good kids of the goats; and I ill make them favoury meat for thy father, uch as he loveth. 10 And thou shalt bring it to thy father, that he may eat, and that he may blefs thee before his death. 1 And Jacob faid to Rebekah his mother, Behold, Efau my brother a hairy man, and I am a fmooth man. 12 My father peradventure will feel me, and I fall feem to him as a deceiver; and I fhall bring a curfe upon me, and not a bleffing. 13 And his mother faid unto him, Upon me be thy curfe, my fon only obey my voice, and go fetch me them. 14 And he went, and fetched, and brought them to his mother: and his mother made favoury meat, fuch as his father loved. 15 And Rebekah took goodly raiment of her eldest fon Efau, which were with her in the houfe, and put them upon Jacob her younger fon. 16 And the put the skins of the kids of the goats upon his hands, and upon the fmooth of his neck. 17 And he gave the favoury meat, and the bread which the had prepared, into the hand of her fon Jacob. 189 And he came unto his father, and faid, My father: And he said, Here am I; who are thou, my fon? 19 And Jacob faid unto his father, I am Efau thy firft-born; I have done according as thou badeft me: arife, I pray thee, fit and eat of my venifon, that thy foul may bless me. 20 And Ifaac faid unto his fon, How is it that thou haft found it fo quickly, my fon? And he faid, Because the LORD thy God brought it to me. 21 And Ifaac faid unto Jacob, Come near, I pray thee that I may feel thee, my fon, whether thou be my very fon Efau or not. 22 And Jacob went near unto Ifaac his father, and he felt him; and faid, The voice Jacobs voice, but the hands are the hands of Efau. 23 And he difcerned him not, becaule his hands were hairy, as his brother Efaus kands: So he bleffed him. obtaineth the bleffing. 25 And he faid, Bring it near to me, and I will eat of my fons venifon, that my foul may blefs thee. And he brought it near to him, and he did eat: and he brought him wine, and he drank. 26 And his father Ifaac faid unto him, Come near now, and kifs me, my fon. 27 And he came near, and kiffed him: and he fmelled the fmell of his raiment, and bleffed him, and faid, See, the fmell of my fon is as the fmell of a field, which the LORD hath bleffed. 28 Therefore God give thee of the dew of heaven, and the fatnefs of the earth, and plenty of corn and wine. 29 Let people ferve thee, and nations bow down to thee; be lord over thy brethren, and let thy mothers fons bow down to thee: Curfed be every one that curleth thee, and bleffed be he that bleffeth thee. 30 And it came to pafs, as foon as Ifaac had made an end of blefling jacob, and Jacob was yet fcarce gone out from the prefence of Ifaac his father, that Efau his brother came in from his hunting. 31 And he alfo had made favoury meat, and brought it unto his father; and faid unto his father, Let my father arife, and eat of his fons venifon, that thy foul may blefs me. 32 And Ifaac his father faid unto him, Who art thou? and he faid, I am thy fon thy first-born Efau. 33 And Ifaac trembled very exceedingly, and faid, Who, where he that hath taken venifon, and brought it me, and I have eaten of all before thou cameft, and have bleffed him? yea, and he fhall be bleffed. 34 And when Efau heard the words of his father, he cried with a great and exceeding bitter cry, and laid unto his father, Blefs me, even me alfo, O my father. 35 And he faid, Thy brother came with fubtilty, and hath taken away thy blefling. 36 And he faid, Is not he rightly named Jacob? for he hath fupplanted me thefe two times: he took away my birth-right; and behold, now he hath taken away my blefling. And he faid, Haft thou not referved a bleffing for me? 37 And Ifaac anfwered and faid unto Efau, behold, I have made him thy lord, and all his brethren have I given to him for fervants; and with corn and wine have I fuftained him: and what fhall I do now unto thee, my fon? 38 And Efau faid unto his father, Haft thou but one blefling, my father? blefs me even me alfo, O my father. He vow. 14 And thy feed fhall be as the dust of the earth; and thou shalt fpread abroad to the weft, and to the east, and to the north, and to the fouth and in thee, and in thy feed fhall all the families of the earth be bleffed. 15 And behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land: for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have fpoken to thee of. 16 And Jacob awaked out of his fleep, and he faid, Surely the LORD is in this place; and I knew it not. 17 And he was afraid, and faid,How dread ful this place! this none other but the houfe of God, and this the gate of heaven 18 And Jacob rofe up early in the morning and took the ftone that he had put for his pillows, and fet it up for a pillar, and pour ed oyl upon the top of it. 758 19 And he called the name of that place Beth-el: but the name of that city was calle ed Luz at the firit. 20 And Jacob vowed a vow, faying, If And Ifaac called Jacob, and bluffed him, God will be with me, and will keep use in and charged him, and faid unto him, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan. 2 Arife, go to Padan-aram, to the house of Bethuel thy mothers father; and take thee a wife from thence of the daughters of Laban thy mothers brother. 3 And God Almighty bless thee, and make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, that thou mayeft be a multitude of people: 4 And give thee the blefling of Abraham, to thee, and to thy feed with thee; that thou mayeft inherit the land wherein thou art a stranger, which God gave unto Abraham. 5 And fent away and he went to Padan-aram unto Laban, fon of Bethuel the Syrian, the brother of Rebekah, Jacobs and Efau's mother. 6 When Efau faw that Ifaac had bleffed Jacob, and fent him away to Padan-aram, to take him a wife from thence; and that as he bleffed him, he gave him a charge, faying, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan; And that Jacob obeyed his father, and his mother, and was gone to Padan-aram; 8 And Efau feeing that the daughters of Canaan pleafed not Ifaac his father: 9 Then went Efau unto Ifhmael, and took unto the wives which he had, Mahalath the daughter of Ifhmael Abrahams fon, the fifter of Nebajoth, to be his wife. 10 9 And Jacob went out from Beer-fheba, and went toward Haran. 11 And he lighted upon a certain place, and tarried there all night, becaufe the fun was fet and he took of the ftones of that place, and put them for his pillows, and lay down in that place to fleep. 12 And he dreamed, and behold a ladder fet upon the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven and behold, the angels of God afcending and defcending on it. 13 And behold, the LORD ftood above it, and faid, I am the LORD God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Ifaac: the land whereon thou lieft, to thee will I give it, and to thy feed. 3 this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on; 21 So that I come again to my fathers houfe in peace: then shall the LORD be my God. 22 And this ftone, which I have fet for a pillar, fhall be Gods houfe: and of all thate thou fhalt give me, I will furely give thes tenth unto thee. CHAP. XXIX. 1 Jacob coming to the well of Haran, 13 is en tertained by Laban, 18 covenanteth for Ra chel, 23 and is deceived with Leab, 28 but n marrieth alfo Rachel. Then Jacob went on his jouple of the came into the land of the east. 2 And he looked, and behold, a well in the field, and lo, there were three flocks of fheep lying by it; for out of that well they watered the flocks: and a great ftone wa upon the wells mouth. And thither were all the flocks gathered: and theyrolled the tone from the wells mouth, and watered the fheep, and put the ftone again upon the wells mouth in his place. 4 And Jacob faid unto them, My brethren, whence be ye? And they faid, Of Haran are we. 5 And he faid unto them, Know ye Laban the fon of Nahor? And they faid, We know him. 6 And he faid unto them, the well? An they faid, He well: and behold, Rachel his daughter cometh with the sheep. Wherefore then haft thou beguiled me? 26 And Laban faid, It must not be fo done in our country, to give the younger before the first-born. 27 Fulfil her week, and we will give thee this allo, for the fervice which thou fhalt ferve with me yet feven other years. 28 And Jacob did fo, and fulfilled her week: and he gave him Rachel his daughter vife alfo. And Laban gave to Rachel his daugh :er Bilhah his handmaid, to be her maid. 30 And he went in alfo unto Rachel, and e loved alio Rachel more than Leah, and erved with him yet feven other years. 319 And when the LORD faw that Leah as hated, he opened her womb: but Rael was barren. CHAP. XXXI. 1 Jacobs departure from Laban. 22 Laban 27 And Laban faid unto him, I pray thee, ANd he heard the words of Labans fons, if I have found favour in thine eyes, tarry: for I have learned by experience, that the LORD hath blefied me for thy fake. 28 And he faid, Appoint me thy wages, and I will give it. 29 And he faid unto him, Thou knoweft how I have ferved thee, and how thy cattel was with me. 30 For it was little which thou hadst before I came, and it is now increated unto a multitude, and the LORD hath bleffed thee fince my coming: and now when fhall I provide for mine own house alfo? 31 And he faid, What fhall I give thee? And Jacob faid, Thou shalt not give me any thing; if thou wilt do this thing for me, I will again feed and keep thy flock: 32 I will pals through all thy flock to day, removing from thence all the fpeckled and fpotted cattel,and all the brown cattel among the sheep, and the fpotted and fpeckled among the goats: and of fuch fhall be my hire. 33 So fhall my righteoufnefs anfwer for ine in time to come, when it fhall come for my hire before thy face: every one that is not fpeckled and potted amongst the goats, and brown amongst the sheep, that hall be accounted ftolen with me. 34 And Laban faid, Behold, I would it might be according to thy word. 35 And he removed that day the he-goats, that were ring-ftraked, and spotted, and all she fhe-goats that were fpeckled and fpotged, and every one that had fome white in it, and all the brown among the fheep, and gave them into the hands of his fons. 36 And he fet three days journey betwixt himself and Jacob: and Jacob fed the reft of Labans flocks. 37 And Jacob took him rods of green poplar, and of the hazel and chefnut-tree; and pilled white ftrakes in them, and made the white appear which was in the rods. 38 And he fet the rods which he had pilled before the flocks in the gutters in the wa#ering-troughs, when the flocks came to drink; that they fhould conceive when they came to drink. 39 And the flocks conceived before the rods, and brought forth cattel ring-ftraked, fpeckled, and potted. 40 And Jacob did feparate the lambs, and fet the faces of the flocks towards the ringftraked, and all the brown in the flock of Laban: and he put his own flocks by them faying, Jacob hath taken away all that was our fathers; and of that which was our fathers hath he gotten all this glory. 2 And Jacob beheld the countenance of Laban, and behold, it was not toward him as before. 3 And the LORD faid unto Jacob, Return unto the land of thy fathers, and to thy kindred; and I will be with thee. 14. And Jacob fent and called Rachel and Leah to the field unto his flock, 5 And faid unto them, I fee your fathers countenance, that it is not toward me as before: but the God of my father hath been with me. 6 And ye know that with all my power I have ferved your father. 7 And your father hath deceived me, and changed my wages ten times: but God fuffered him not to hurt me. 8 If he faid thus, The fpeckled fhall be thy wages; then all the cattel bare fpeckled: and if he faid thus, The ring-ftraked fhall be thy hire; then bare all the cattel ring-ftraked. 9 Thus God hath taken away the cattel of your father, and given them to me. 10 And it came to pafs at the time that the cattel conceived, that I lifted up mine eyes, and faw in a dream, and behold, the rams which leaped upon the cattel were ring-ftraked, fpeckled, and grifled. II And the angel of God fpake unto me in a dream, faying, Jacob: And I faid, Here am I. 12 And he faid, Lift up now thine eyes and fee, all the rams which leap upon the cattel are ring-ftraked, fpeckled, and grilled: for I have feen all that Laban doeth unto thee. 13 I am the God of Beth-el, where thou anointedft the pillar, and where thou vowedit a vow unto me: now arife, get thee out from this land, and return unto the land of thy kindred. 14 And Rachel and Leah answered, and faid unto him, Is there yet any portion or inheritance for us in our fathers houfe? 15 Are we not counted of him ftrangers? for he hath fold us, and hath quite devou. red alfo our money. 16 For all the riches which God hath ta. ken from our father, that is ours, and our childrens now then whatsoever God hath faid unto thee, do. 179 Then Jacob rofe up, and fet his fops and his wives upon camels. 18 And he carried away all his cattel, and all w parfued by him: Chap. xxxj. all his goods which he had gotten, the cattel of his getting, which he had gotten in Padan-aram; for to go to Ifaac his father in the land of Canaan. 19 And Laban went to fhear his fheep and Rachel had ftolen the images that were her fathers. 20 And Jacob ftole away unawares to Laban the Syrian, in that he told him not that he fled. 21 So he fled with all that he had, and he rofe up, and paffed over the river, and fet his face toward the mount Gilead. 22 And it was told Laban on the third day that Jacob was fled. 23 And he took his brethren with him, and purfued after him seven days journey; and they overtook him in the mount Gilead. 24 And God came to Laban the Syrian in a dream by night, and faid unto him, Take heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad. 259 Then Laban overtook Jacob. Now Jacob had pitched his tent in the mount: and Laban with his brethren pitched in the mount of Gilead. 26 And Laban faid to Jacob, What haft thou done, that thou haft ftolen away unawares to me, and carried away my daugh ters, as captives taken with the fword? 27 Wherefore didft thou flee away fecretly, and fteal away from me? and didft not tell me, that I might have fent thee away with mirth, and with fongs, with tabret, and with harp? 28 And halt not fuffered me to kiss my fons and my daughters? thou haft now done foolishly in fo doing. 29 It is in the power of my hand to do you hurt but the God of your father fpake unto me yefternight, faying, Take thou heed that thou fpeak not to Jacob either good or bad. 30 And now though thou wouldft reeds be gone, because thou fore longedit after thy fathers houfe; yet wherefore haft thou stolen my gods? 31 And Jacob answered and faid to La ban, Because I was afraid: for I faid, Peradventure thou wouldft. take by force thy daughters from me. 32 With whomfoever theu findeft thy gods, let him not live: before our brethren difcern thou what is thine with me, and take it to thee: for Jacob knew not that Rachel had ftolen them. 33 And Laban went into Jacobs tent, and into Leahs tent, and into the two maid-fervants tents; but he found them not. Then went he out of Leahs tent, and entred into Rachels tent. 34 Now Rachel had taken the images, and put them in the camels furniture, and fat up on them: and Laban fearched all the tent, but found them not. 35 And the faid to her father, Let it not displeafe my lord that I cannot rife up before thee; for the custom of women is upon me: and he fearched, but found not the images. 364 And Jacob was wroth, and chode with Laban: and Jacob answered, and faid 5. Their covenant at Galeed. to Laban, What my trefpafs What is my fin that thou haft to hotly pursued after me? 37 Whereas thou haft fearched all my stuff, what haft thou found of all thy houtholdstuff? fet it here before my brethren and thy brethren, that they may judge betwixt us both. 38 These twenty years have I been with thee; thy ews and thy fhe-goats have not. cast their young, and the rams of thy flock have I not eaten. 39 That which was torn of beafts, I brought not unto thee, I bare the lofs of it; of iny hand didst thou require it, whether stolen by day, or stolen by night. 40 Thus I was, in the day the drought confumed me, and the froft by night; and my fleep departed from mine eyes. 41 Thus have I been twenty years in thy houfe; I ferved thee fourteen years for thy two daughters, and fix years for thy cattel: and thou haft changed my wages ten times. 42 Except the God of my father, the God of Abraham, and the fear of Ifaac had been with me, furely thou hadst fent me away now empty: God hath feen mine affliction and the labour of my hands, and rebuked thee yefternight. 43 And Laban answered, and faid unto Jacob, Thefe daughters are my daughters, and these children are my children, and thefe cattel are my cattel, and all that thou feet is mine: and what can I do this day unto thele my daughters, or unto their children which they have born? 44 Now therefore come thou, let us make a covenant, I and thou; and let it be for a witnels between me and thee. 45 And Jacob took a stone, and fet it up for a pillar 46 And Jacob faid unto his brethren, Ga ther ftones; and they took ftones, and made an heap: and they did eat there upon the heap. 47 And Laban called it Jegar-fahadutha but Jacob called it Galeed. 48 And Laban faid, This heap is a wit neis between me and thee this day. Therefore, was the name of it called Galeed : 49 And Mizpah; for he faid, The LORD watch between me and thee, when we are abfent one from another. So If thou fhalt afflict my daughters, or if thou fhalt take other wives befides my daughters, no man is with us; See, God is witnefs betwixt me and thee. 51 And Laban faid to Jacob, Behold this heap, and behold this pillar, which I have caft betwixt me and thee; 52 This heap be witness, and this pillar be witnefs, that I will not pass over this heap to thee, and that thou shalt not pafs over this heap and this pillar unto me, for harm. 53 The God of Abraham, and the God of Nahor, the God of their father, judge betwixt us.
