1 Thef. v. 23. forecited. Compared with Rom. vi. 13. Neither yield ye your members as instru'ments of unrighteousness unto fin: but yield your• selves unto God, as those that are alive from the
dead; and your members as instruments of righ« teousness unto God.' The Result of that Renew. ing in the whole Man, is the new Creature, or new Man of Grace on us : 2 Cor. V. 17. If any
man • be in Christ, he is a new creature : old things are
passed away, behold, all things are become new.? Eph. ii. 10. We are God's workmanship, created
in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath ' before ordained that we should walk in them.' Chap. iv. 24. forecited.
The new Creature is formed after the Image of God. And the image of God restored in Sanctification, consists in the new Qualities, of Knowledge in the Mind, Righteousness in the Will
, and Holiness in the Affections: Col. iii. 10.'* And have
put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge, after the image of him that created him.' Eph. iv. 24, . And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and
true holiness. But that restored Image is expressed on us immediately, from Jesus Christ the Second Adam, who is the Image of the invisible God: Gal. iv. 19. My little children, of whom I travail ' in birth again, until Christ be formed in you.' 1 Cor. xv. 49: 'As we have borne the image of • the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the
heavenly. Compared with Col. i. 15. The Son ! is the image of the invisible God.' Compare I Cor. xi. 7. Man is tlie image and glory of God;' with Gen. i. 26." And God said, Let us make man ' in our image, after our likeness.”- vers: 27: So
"God created man in his own image, in the image r of God created he him.'
The Difference between the Renewing in effectu. al Calling, and the Renewing in Sanctification, lies, here, that in the former new vital Powers, in the latter new Qualities and Habits of Grace are infused into us : John v. 25. Verily verily I say up
to you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God:
and they that hear shall live. Compared with I Cor. v. 6. ' Know ye not that a little leaven • leaveneth the whole lump? Heb. viii. 10. 11. 12.
For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, faith the
Lord ; I will put my laws into their mind, and o write them in their hearts : and I will be'to
them a God, and they shall be to me a people. . And they fhall not teach every man his neigh
bour, and every man his brother, saying, Know (the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least
to the greatest. For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniqui
ties will I remember no more. These new Qua, lities and Habits of Grace are, the Seeds of Rc. pentance unto Life, and of all other saving Graces, making an entire new Creature, or new Man: I John iii. 9. "Whosoever is born of God, doth
not commit sin ; for his feed remaineth in him ; S and he cannot fin, because he is born of God.' AEls xi. 18. “Then hạth God also to the Gentiļeş • granted repentance unto Life.'
2 Cor. v. 17. Eph. iv. 24. both forecited. These new Qualities and Habits of Grace are derived to us, from the Allfulness of Grace in the Man Chrift: Col. i. 19. * For it pleased the Father, that in him should all
fulness dwell. Compared with Johni. 16. And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.' And they are communicated from Chrift unto as, by his Spirit : John xvi. 14. 15. 'The Spirit of truth shalt glorify me : for he shall receive of mine, and fhall thew it unto you. All
things that the Father hath, are mine : there.. • fore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall • Thew it unto you.' The Effect of that Commu. nication is, that we are sealed with the Image of Christ, receiving Grace for Grace in Christ, as the Wax doch Point for Point in the Seal: Eph. i. 13. ' In Chrift ye also trusted after that ye heard
the word of truth, the gospel of your fálvation : ' in whom also after that ye believed, ye were seal. ļ ed with that Holy Spirit of promise.' Compared with 2 Cor. iii. 18. But we all, with open face, be
holding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image, from glory to glo
ry, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. And john i. 16. Gal. iv. 19. forecited. And by that Means our Union with Christ issues in our being one Spifit with Christ, as really as Eve was one Flesh with Adam, being formed of him : 1 Cor. vi. 17. He • that is joined unto the Lord, is one spirit.' Com.. pared with Eph. v. 30. 31. 32. ' For we are mem
bers of the Lord's body, of his flesh, and of his f,bones. For this cause shall a man leave his fa. "ther and mother, and shall be joined unto his ! wife, and they two shall be one flesh. This is a
great mystery : but I speak concerning Christ and ! the church. Now, to be one Spirit with Christ, is to be of one and the same fpiritual Nature with him, as his spiritual Seed : Heb. ii. 11. ' For both he that fanctifieth, and they who are fanctified,
are all of one: for which cause he is not alhamed
to call them brethren. Compared with John iii. 6. "That which is born of the Spirit, is fpirit. And if. liii. 10. "When thou shalt make his ' soul an offering for sin, he shall see his feed.'
But though, in Sanctification, we are renewed in the whole Man, yet we are not renewed in any Part: but there are Remains of Corruption still indwelling in every Part: Rom. vii. 18. *For I know,
that in me (that is, in my feh) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me, but
how to perform that which is good, I find not.' vers. 23. 24. • I see another law in my members,
warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin, which is in my
members. O wretched man that I am, who shall deliver me from the body of this death!' Eph. iv, 22. Put off concerning the former conversation, the old man which is corrupt accord
ing to the deceitful lufts. That is to say, there are Remains of Corruption still in the Mind, Will, and Affections, and in the Body by way of Communion with the unrenewed Part: i Gor. xiii. 9. “We know in part. Gal. v. 17.
The flesh lufteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh : and these are contrary the one to the othe other ; so that ye cannot do the things that
ye would. Rom. vii. 14. 'I am carnal, sold un« der fin. Phil. iii. 21. The Lord Jesus Christ
shall change our vile body, that it may be fasħioned like unto his glorious body.
What ensues on these two contrary Principles of Grace and Corruption, being together in every Part of the renewed Man, is, the continual Combat between the Flesh and the Spirit, Gal. v. 17.
forecited. The Difference betwixt that Combat, and the Struggle against Sin, sometime found in the Unregenerate, lies here, that in the former, the Conflict is between the Flesh and the Spirit in one and the same Part; in the latter, it is between the Flesh in one Part, lusting, and the Flesh in another Part, fearing : Rom. vii. 15. 16. 'That which I do, I allow not : for what I would, that do I
but what I hate, that do I. If then I do. that which I would not, I consent unto the law,.
that it is good.' 2 Pet. ii. 15. Which have for 'faken the right way, and are gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Bofor, who
loved the wages of unrigiteousness.?. Compared with Num. xxii. 18. 'And Balaam answered and " said unto the servants of Balak, If Balak would
give me his house-full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of the Lord my God,
to do less or more. The immediate Issue of the Combat between the Flesh and the Spirit, is, that neither the one Principle, nor the other, carries the Action to the Perfection it tends unto, Gal. v. 17. forecited.' And in that Combat, the remaining Corruption may prevail for a Time, Rom. vii. 23. forecited. · But the renewed Part overcomes : Rom. vi. 1-4. 'Şin shall not have dominion over
you : for ye are not under the law, but under grace.' i John v. 4. Whatsoever is born of God, overcometh the world : and this is the
victory that overcometh the world, even our I faith.
The State we are in, with respect to Sin and Righteousness, by means of the Renewing in Sanctification, is, a State of Death unto Sin, and of Life unto Righteousness.
