The State of Death unto Sin, for the Kind of it, is fuch a State of Death as a crucified Man is in, who being nailed to the Cross, shall never come down, till he breathe out his laft: Rom. vi. 6. < Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with Chrift, that the body of fin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not ferve fin.' Gal. vi. 14. God forbid that I fhould glory, fave in the crofs of our Lord Jefus Chrift, by whom the ⚫ world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.” And we are, by the Renewing in Sanctification, put into fuch a State of Death unto Sin, inasmuch as thereby the Dominion or reigning Power of the whole Body of Sins is deftroyed, and the Pollution or Defilement of Sin is purged away from off the whole Man, though not perfectly in any Part: Rom. vi. 6. 14. forecited. Tit. iii. 5. Not by 'works of righteousness, which we have done, but according to his mercy he faved us, by the wafhing of regeneration, and renewing of the 'Holy Ghoft.' Compared with John xiii. 10. Jefus faith to him, He that is washed, needeth not, 'fave to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all." The Dominion or reigning Power of Sin is deftroyed in us, by means of the Renewing in Sanctification, in that a contrary reigning Principle of Grace is thereby fet in us: Rom. vi. 14. forecited. 1. John iii. 9. Whofoever is born of God, doth not commit fin; for his feed remaineth in him and he cannot 'fin, because he is born of God.' The Pollution er Defilement of Sin is purged away by the fame Means, inasmuch as the reftored Image of God in us, makes us really pure and clean in the Sight of God, as far as it goes: Tit. iii. 5. above cited. The State of Life unto Righteoufnefs, for the Kind of it, is fuch as a Man is in, who, being not only quickened, but rifen and come forth of the Grave, is in an immediate Difpofition for the common Actions of Life: Rom. vi. 4. Therefore we < are buried with him by baptifm into death: that ' like as Chrift was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even fo we also should walk ' in newness of life.' Col. i. 1. If ye then be 'rifen with Chrift, feek those things which are a

bove, where Chrift fitteth on the right hand of. 'God.' Compared with Matth. xxviii. 6. Jefus ' is not here: for he is rifen, as he faid.' John xi. 44. And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with grave-cloaths and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jefus faith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.' And we are, by the Renewing in Sanctification, put into fuch a State of Life unto Righteousness, inafmuch as thereby we are endowed with infufed Habits of Grace, the immediate Principles of gracious Actions: Deut. xxx. 6. And the Lord thy God will 'circumcife thine heart, and the heart of thy feed, · to love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy foul, that thou mayst live.' Heb. viii. 10. For this is the covenant that I will make ' with the house of Ifrael after those days, faith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts.' 2 Pet. i. 4. Whereby

'Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises; that by these you might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through luft.'. We are in that State of Life unto Righteousnefs, in respect of our renewed Part: Gal. i 20. I am crucified with Chrift: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Chrift liveth in me: and the life which 'I now live in the flesh, I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and -gave himself for me. Compared with Rom. vii. 17. Now then, it is no more I that do it, but fin that dwelleth in me.'

Actual Sanctification is the Work of the Spirit, whereby we are enabled more and more to die unto Sin, and live unto Righteousness. Actual Holiness, proceeding from that State of Death and Life, con-fifts, in more and more dying unto Sin, and living unto Righteousness: Gal v. 24. And they that are Christ's, have crucified the flesh, with the af'fections and lufts.' Rom. vi. 4. Therefore we are buried with him by baptifm into death: that like as Chrift was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even fo we also should walk in newness of life.' verf. 6. Dying unto Sin more and more,. lies in our mortifying of Sin, until it die out: Rom. viii. 13. 'If ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of ' of the body, ye fhall live.' Col. iii. 5. Mortify 'therefore

therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, &c. The Sins which true Mortification is aimed against, are, the whole Body of the Sins of the Flesh, Col. ii. 11. Gal v. 24. forecited. We mortify them, by refufing Compliance with them, and acting the contrary Graces: Gal. v. 16. 17. This I fay then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye • shall not fulfil the luft of the flesh. For the flesh lufteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh and these are contrary the one to the other; fo that ye cannot do the things that ye would.', Tit. ii, 11. 12. The grace of God that bringeth falvation, hath appeared to all men; * teaching us, that, denying ungodliness, and worldly lufts, we should live foberly, righteously, and godly in this prefent world.' They are mortified that Way, because in that Way they are ftarved, and Grace is ftrengthened: Rom. xiii. 14. Put ye on the Lord Jefus Chrift, and make not provifion for the flesh, to fulfil the lufts thereof.' Heb. v. 14. Strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their fenfes exercised to discern both good and evil.'

Living unto Righteoufnefs more and more, lies in our practifing of Acts of holy Obedience, or good Works, until we arrive at Perfection there1 Pẹt. iv. 1. 2. 'Chrift Jefus.' verf. 14. I prefs toward the mark, for the prize of the high calling of God in Chrift Jefus. And that Practice of Obedience extends to the whole known Will of God: Acts xiii. 22. And God faid, I have found David

A good Work, or Act of holy Obedience, is, any Thought, Word, or Deed, agreeable to the Will of God, and pleafing in his Sight: Phil. iv. 8. Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatfoever things are honeft, whatsoever things are juft, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever <things are lovely, whatfoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praife, think on these things.' Heb. xiii. 21. Now the God of peace make you perfect in every good work, to do his will, working in you that which is well pleafing in his fight, through 6 Jefus Chrift.' And fuch Works are, thofe which are commanded in God's Word, done in Faith, and directed to his Glory: Matth. xv. 9. In ' vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines 'the commandments of men.' Rom. xiv. 23.

Whatfoever is not of faith, is fin.' Compared with Heb. xi. 6. Without faith it is impoffible to please God: for he that cometh to God, must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of ' them
