First Edition of " Queen Elizabeth's Prayer Book."

The text is in black letter, and is surrounded by a woodcut border consisting of pieces of a scriptural or allegorical character in the style of Holbein. Some of the prayers are in the first person.

Inside the cover of this copy, in which the woodcuts have been unluckily coloured, occurs, in an 18th century [Elizabeth Cottrell's] hand, "This Book had from Queene Elizabeth's dayes remained in the Wardrope at White Hall till the time of Cromwell, when it was reserved by Mr. Jollife one of the Keepers of ye Wardrope, who some time after gave it to the Wife of Mr. Lodowick Carlyle, by whome it was given to Mr. Burrell: by whose direction it was taken out of the old cover & thus bound." On the opposite flyleaf is written: "Qween Elizabeth her owne Prayer Booke," and "Elizabeth Cottrell giuen me by my Most kind Mother Mis Frances Burwell."

The volume is in richly ornamented and tooled old blue morocco.
