unlucky day when Prince Albert was associated with Buckland, Isaac Taylor, and even Bishop Sumner; still worse Powell, Sedgwick, and others. It is a thousand pities that he ever heard of infidel, unscriptural geology. We wish to keep the father's mind unsophisticated, for the sons, the future hope of the nation. We wish our kings, queens, and princes, kept with special care. We would rather have them under the care of Matthew Henry, Thomas Scott, and John Guyse, than modern Bishops, Priests, and Deacons. Let them compare Exod. xx. 11, and Gen. 1, taking the language in its plain, simple, and common meaning. Would our exemplary Queen and attached Prince, ever have dreamed that the sun, and moon, and stars, were shining innumerable ages before the creation of man, when Moses says they were only made forty-eight hours before him? Would they ever have supposed that these innumerable ages intervened between the first and second verses of Gen. i., looking at the matter, mode, or connection? And what proof is there of all this ?-absolutely not a vestige? Would it not be more desirable that our youthful, beautiful Queen, and her amiable Consort, were allowed to pour into the minds of their growing family the pure theology of the articles of the Established Churches, and of our Confession of Faith, and Catechisms, than the poisonous draughts of false, irrational, unscriptural philosophy? We wish their faith built upon the Apostles and Prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner-stone. If the Committee of the Sabbath Alliance believe the Fourth Commandment, they must believe it in its integrity. They must believe the reason annexed in its letter and spirit, as well as the positive enactment. They should be equally against all false geology, as against all Sabbath desecration. Their opponents say they have profanely designated themselves as the Lord's people. Unquestionably they pledge themselves to take the Bible simply in its plain common sense meaning, without note or comment. If they are the friends of the Sabbath, their exertions, influence, money, must all be at its command. They must be the friends of the Lord of the Sabbath. They must, individually, be as active, as faithful, as disinterested, as the late Sir Andrew Agnew. We give their names; the acting committee in italics. There are some of them, we think, leal men and true. Rev. Dr. W. L. If these gentlemen do not incessantly and strenuously do their duty, not only by defensive, but aggressive warfare, then the attempt made by Messrs. Cox and Co., July 27, 1849, will replace the trains on the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway, and trains will run on the Caledonian, Edinburgh and Northern, Scottish Central, and North British; 193 carriages and cabs will be seen again by Mr. Locke at the doors of four churches in Edinburgh,-one of them Dr. Candlish's, while only five cabs were required on the arrival of the Caledonian train on that day. Drunkenness, profaneness, uncleanness, and Sabbath profanation, and all iniquity, prevails, (Isa. i. 2, 6.) As we have given the full Committee of the Sabbath Alliance, who should all be religious observers of the Sabbath, we subjoin the names of the requesters of Dr. Nicol to deliver his Lectures on the Nebular Theory, in Edinburgh, in April, 1845, as they should have all understood and believed that hypothesis:-Hon. Lord Murray, Lord Cunningham, Rev. Drs. Chalmers, Bennie, Gordon, Lee, Crawford, Brown, Candlish; Rev. Robt. Horne Stevenson, W. L. Alexander; Baillies Duncan, Gray, Dick, Lord Dean of Guild; Councillors

Tait, Grant, Wilson, Lothian, Stott, Russell, Ritchie: Professor More, Alex. Macconochie Meadowbank, David Milne, Advocate, W. Scott, Robt. Blair Macconochie, Dr. Maclagan, James Wilson, Robt. Cox, Dr. Andrew Combe, Robt. Chambers, Charles Smith, William Tait, Charles Maclaren, George Combe, Richard Whytock, Alex. Hill, Alex. Crichton, W. M'Crie, Charles Forbes, Hugh Miller, Alex. Robertson Eldin, J. H. Burton, Robt. Nasmith, Robt. Bryson, Claud Russell, W. Macdonald, Allan Menzies, T. G. Murray, David Stevenson, T. R. Stodart, R. S. Grieve, D. J. Thomson, Thos. Clapperton, Ralph, Jas., and Robt. Richardson, Arch. Campbell, Blythswood, George Sym, J. Begbie, John C. Brodie, George Callam, from President of Edin. Phil. Association, in name of the Directors, (p. 545.)-Edinburgh Advertiser, July, 1849. Lord Cunninghame, in the case of Thomson v. Stewart and Morris, as reported in the Edinburgh Advertiser, July 27, 1849, said, As the clause in the Poors' Act was express and unambiguous, it must receive effect according to the plain sense and import of the words. Are we not entitled to get the Bible taken according to the opinions of President Boyle (p. 597 and C90) and Lord Cunninghame? The ministers, elders, and deacons of the Frees are great Sabbatarians, and yet great geologians. They believe the beginning of the fourth commandment in its letter and its spirit, and do not believe its end, either in its letter or spirit. So much for consistency, and, awful to be told, being wiser than the great Head of the Church-the eternal Son. My passages, as my friend Thomas Henderson, Greenbeck, taunted ine, are few and unimportant. What will bigotry and priestcraft-witness popery-not accomplish? In the language of Dr. Fleming, Opinions and assertions are substituted for facts, and supersede the word of the living God. Dr. Pye Smith and Mr. Miller insist upon it, that their geology belongs to past and vast eternity, against Jehovah and His Spirit, and Moses, His faithful servant, and right reason and common sense. They will have it located surreptitiously in time, and pretend, that unless the Bible be torn asunder to admit it, the infidel will triumph. Let him triumph, and them with him; but the Bible will never admit it, but at the Flood, whereto it essentially belongs. We have had a running fight with these gentlemen, and those they have vauntingly adduced; but we have not intended to say one word offensively against any of them. We ask their forgiveness (p. 596) for any unintended, unguarded expression. We shall be ready to cancel any word or sentence beyond the bounds of free, unreserved, and lawful discussion. Dr. Chalmers was

not allowed time to recall his strange reasoning against the argument, founded on design, to abandon irrational, unscriptural geology, (p. 647). Let them beware. Truth will triumph in spite of their puny efforts, and all who are leagued with them, (Psalm ii. ;) and God's word (in the sense of Lord President Boyle and Lord Cunninghame) is Truth. Taking the Bible in its inviolable integrity, sequence and unity, language, evidence, and fact, geology must take its place at the flood of Noah, and must claim the support of all who believe the Bible and reverence the Sabbath, as those gentlemen profess to do who have sisted themselves to oppose the running of Sabbath trains on the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway, on Tuesday, 21st August, 1849. Their names are-Charles Philip, Leith; James Cunningham, Edinburgh; P. Dalmahoy, Professor James Miller, James Blackadder, James Walker, William Dickson, David Dickson, Thomas Constable, Archibald Bonar, David Hay, John Boog, J. G. Wood, James Braidwood, Thomas Thomson, Alex. Auchie, F. Barbour, George Hay, James Bridges, George Baxter Simpson, W. Cushnie, William Stevenson, George Caddel, George Smyttan, Sir James Forrest, H. Morrison, John Ronaldson, John Maitland, William Wood, H. Lyon, Rev. William Blaikie, William Cowan, Charles Watson, D.D., James Miller, D. C. Bell, Robert Morrieson, Allan Menzies, James Clarkson,-all of Edinburgh, though they might surely have got many more in it who take the Fourth Commandment in its integrity; Geo. Burns, Glasgow: John Leadbetter, William Brown, William Mirrilees, jun., M. Montgomerie, J. D. Bryce, William Gourlie, M. Stevenson, William Kidston, Richard Kidston, jun., Robert Richardson, John Meiklem, James Fraser, Stewart Bates, J. M. Symington, James Hair, R. Blair, John Macnaughitan, M. Buchanan, Arch. Gardner, James Pollock, James Findlay, Alex. Smith, William Macfie, John Macfie, C. Brownlie, William Campbell, Hugh Cogan, Rich. Kidston, J. H. Young, Robert Kettle, John Jamieson, John Wilson, Robert Blackie, Jas. Wright, And. Wingate, J. H. M'Clure, Geo. S. Buchanan, G. W. Muir, Wm. Brown, M.D., C. Henderson, John M'Ewen, Andrew Henderson, J. Stevenson, jun., James Wren Carlile, Wm. Wilson, Robt. Wardrop, William Duff, James Ellis, James Burns, Robert Macfie, W. L. Laurie, James Smith. None of these, surely, will divide the Fourth Commandment-not believing literally the reason annexed-worse than the Romanists the second. The unity of Scripture, having no chasm from the first verse of Genesis to the last of Revelation, is a very wonderful thing. The Bible is not the production of one author, nor of one country;
