Behold, I will lift up mine hand to the Gentiles, and set up my standard to the people. 23 And kings shall be thy nursing-fathers, and their queens thy nursing mothers: and thou shalt know that I am the Lord. 25 Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the terrible shall be delivered: for I will con tend with him that contendeth with thee, and I will save thy children. 26 And all flesh shall know that I the Lord am thy saviour and thy redeemer, the mighty One of Jacob.

CHAP. LI. Trust in God.

HEARKEN to me, ye that follow after righteousness, ye that seek the Lord: look unto the rock whence ye are hewn, and to the pit whence ye are digged. 3 For the Lord shall comfort Zion: he will comfort all her waste places, and he will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the Lord: joy and gladness shall be found therein, thanksgiving, and the voice of melody. 7 Fear ye not the reproach of men, neither be ye afraid of their revilings. 8 For the moth shall eat them up like a garment; but my righteousness shall be for ever, and my salvation from generation to generation. 11 Therefore the redeemed of the Lord shall return, and come with singing unto Zion, and everlasting joy shall be upon their head: they shall obtain gladness and joy, and sorrow and mourning shall flee away. 12 I, even I am he that comforteth you: who art thou, that thou shouldest be afraid of a man that shall die, and of the son of man which shall be made as grass? 13 And forgettest the Lord thy maker, that hath stretched forth the heavens, and laid the foundation of the earth?

CHAP. LIII. Christ's Sufferings foretold.

WHO hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed? 2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness: and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. 3 He is despised and rejected of men, a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. 4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. 5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him, and with his stripes we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way, and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. 7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. 8 He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken. 9 And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.

CHAP. LV. Promises to Faith.

Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy and eat; yea come, buy wine and milk without!

2 Wherefore do ye

money, and without price. spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not?" hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness 3 Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your souls shall live, and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David. 6 Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near. 7 Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. 9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. 10 For as the rain cometh down, and watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud; 11 So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that whereto I sent it. 12 For ye shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace: the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing.

13 Instead of the thorn shall come up the fir tree, and instead of the briar shall come up the myrtle tree and it shall be to the Lord for a name, for an everlasting sign that shall not be cut ff.

CHA. LVI. Exhortation to Holiness.

THUS sith the Lord, Keep ye judgment and do justice for my salvation is near to come, and my righteousness to be revealed. 2 Blessed is the man that doeth this, and the son of man that

layeth hold on it: that keepeth the sabbath from polluting it, and keepeth his hand from doing any evil. 7 Even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer: their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon mine altar; for mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people. 10 His watchmen are blind, sleeping, lying down, loving to slumber. 11 Yea, they are greedy, and they are shepherds that cannot understand: they all look to their own way, every one for his gain from his quarter. 12 Come ye, say they, we will fill ourselves with strong drink, and to-morrow shall be as this day, and much more abundant.

CHAP. LVII. Blessed End of the Righteous.

THE righteous perisheth, and no man layeth it to heart; and merciful men are taken away, none considering that the righteous is taken away from the evil to come. 2 He shall enter into peace : they shall rest in their beds, each one walking in his uprightness. 15 For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy, I dwell in the high and holy place; with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones. 16 For I will not contend for ever, neither will I be always wroth: for the spirit should fail before me, and the souls which I have made. 19 I create the fruit of the lips peace, peace to him that is far off, and to him that is near, saith the Lord, and I will heal him. 20 But the wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt. 21 There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked.

CHAP. LVIII. Hypocrisy reproved.

CRY aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and shew my people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins. 2 Yet they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways, as a nation that did righteousness, and forsook not the ordinance of their God. 3 Wherefore have we fasted, say they, and thou seest not? wherefore have we afflicted our soul, and thou takest no knowledge? 4 Behold, ye fast for strife and debate : 5 Wilt thou call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the Lord? 6 Is not his the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke? 7 Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out, to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him, and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?

10 And if thou draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noonday. 11 And the Lord shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not. 13 If thou turn

away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day, and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: 14 Then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord, and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father; for the mouth of the. Lord hath spoken it.
