THIS book is a stream from the fountain of the author's heart, and it is the fruit of his inner life. Having known him during nearly twenty years, and observed him in joy and in sorrow, in active service and in rest imposed by sickness, I am able to trace the stream to the fountain, and to connect the fruit with the tree. What shall we say of the stream, and what of the fruit? Certainly the former is living water clear as crystal, and the latter is fruit sweet as honey, and beautiful as apples of gold in fretwork of silver. To our mind this preface is needless, and we yield our judgment to that of the author of the book, in writing even these few lines. The very title will attract readers of "a Godly sort," and the contents are such that they will hold fast the attention of all who, in sympathy with the subject, begin to read. Simple, clear, and forcible in style, evangelical and catholic in spirit, rich in Christian truth, and true in its aim at usefulness, we trust that the book will be widely circulated, and that it will be read with much profit. Those who have had but few religious advantages when first convinced of sin, are often grievously perplexed as to the Way of Salvation, and they often make many sad and harassing mistakes. This book will be a clear light upon their path. Many, also, after they have begun to trust in Jesus Christ, are diverted from Him, and, forsaking the fountain of living water, "hew out to themselves cisterns, broken cisterns which can hold no water." This book exhibits the manifold cord which must ever bind us to the Saviour, and keep us united to Him.
