CHAPTER III.

1 He assureth them of the certainty of Christ's coming to judgment, against those scorners who dispute against it: 8 warning the godly, for the long patience of God, to hasten their repentance. 10 He describeth also the manner how the world shall be destroyed 11 exhorting them, from the expectation thereof, to all holiness of life 15 and again, to think the patience of God to tend to their salvation, as Paul wrote to them in his epistles.

"I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance :

creation.

little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, a we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for our's only, but C also for the sins of the whole world.

3 And hereby we do know thatwe know him, if we keep his commandments.

4 d He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, eis a liar, and the truth is not in him.

5 But whoso keepeth his word, g in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.

6 He that saith he abideth in him *ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

7 Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning.

8 Again, "a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: "because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.

13 I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. Iwrite unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father.

14 I havewritten unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.

15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him,

16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, band the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

THE SECOND EPISTLE OF

JOHN.

1 He exhorteth a certain honourable matron, |
with her children, to persevere in Christian
love and belief, 8 lest they lose the reward
of their former profession: 10 and to have
nothing to do with those seducers that bring
not the true doctrine of Christ Jesus.

HE elder unto the elect lady and
her children, whom I love in
the truth and not I only, but also all
they that have known b the truth;

2 For the truth's sake, which dwelleth in us, and shall be with us for ever.

3 Grace be with you, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, d in truth and love.

4 I rejoiced greatly that I found of thy children walking in truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father.

5 And now I beseech thee, lady, fnot as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another.

6 And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the i 1 John 2.24. commandment, That, as ye have

heard from the beginning, ye should
walk in it.

7 For many deceivers are entered
into the world, who confess not that
Jesus Christ is come in the flesh.
m This is a deceiver and an antichrist.
8 "Look to yourselves, that we
lose not those things which we have
2 wrought, but that we receive a full
reward.

9 P Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.

10 If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, 9 neither bid him God speed:

11 For he that biddeth him speed is partaker of his evil deeds.

12 Having many things to write unto you, I would not write with paper and ink but I trust to come unto you, and speak face to face, that our joy may be full.

THE THIRD EPISTLE OF

JOHN.

1 He commendeth Gaius for his piety, 5 and
hospitality 7 to true preachers: com-
plaining of the unkind dealing of am
bitious Diotrephes on the contrary side,
11 whose evil example is not to be followed:

3 For I rejoiced greatly, when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in thee, even as b thou walkest in the truth.

4 I have no greater joy than to hear c Cor. 4. 15. that my children walk in truth. 5 Beloved, thou doest faithfully whatsoever thou doest to the brethren, and to strangers;

6 Which have borne witness of thy charity before the church: whom if thou bring forward on their journey 5 after a godly sort, thou shalt do well: they went forth, d taking nothing of 7 Because that for his name's sake the Gentiles.

8 We therefore ought to receive such, that we might be fellowhelpers to the truth.

9 I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth usnot. 10 Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth, prating against us with malicious words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth them out of the church.

called:

2 Mercy unto you, and peace, and love, be multiplied.

3 Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.

4 For there are certain men erept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and I de nying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.

5 I will therefore put you in remembrance, though ye once knew this, how that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward "destroyed them that be. lieved not.

6 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.

11 Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way " of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core.
