1 COME, Holy Spirit, Heavenly Dove, With all thy quickening powers, Kindle a flame of sacred love

In these cold hearts of ours.

2 In vain we tune our formal songs,
In vain we strive to rise;
Hosannas languish on our tongues,
And our devotion dies.

3 Come, Holy Spirit, Heavenly Dove, With all thy quickening powers, Come, shed abroad a Saviour's love, And that shall kindle ours.

BEDDOME.

Prayer for the Holy Spirit.

1 COME, blessed Spirit, Source of light,
Whose power and grace are unconfined,
Dispel the gloomy shades of night,
The thicker darkness of the mind.

2 To mine illumined eyes display
The glorious truth thy word reveals;
Cause me to run the heavenly way;
The book unfold, unloose the seals.

3 Thine inward teachings make me know
The mysteries of redeeming love,
The emptiness of things below,
The excellence of things above.

4 While through this dubious maze I stray,
Spread, like the sun, thy beams abroad,
To show the dangers of the way,
And guide my feeble steps to God.

C. M. CAPPE'S SELECTION.

Prayer for Divine Guidance.

1 ETERNAL SOURCE of life and light,
Supremely good and wise,

To thee we bring our grateful vows,
To thee lift up our eyes.

2 Our dark and erring minds illume
With truth's celestial rays;
Inspire our hearts with sacred love,
And tune our lips to praise.

3 Safely conduct us by thy grace
Through life's perplexing road;

And place us, when that journey's o'er,
At thy right hand, O God!

WATTS.

Nature and Scripture. Ps. 19.

1 THE heavens declare thy glory, Lord!
In every star thy wisdom shines;
But, when our eyes behold thy word,
We read thy name in fairer lines.

2 The rolling sun, the changing light;
And nights, and days, thy power confess;
But the blest volume thou hast writ
Reveals thy justice and thy grace.

3 Sun, moon, and stars, convey thy praise
Round the whole earth, and never stand;
So when thy truth began its race,
It touched and glanced on every land.

4 Nor shall thy spreading gospel rest
Till through the world thy truth has run;
Till Christ has all the nations blest,
That see the light, or feel the sun.

5 Great Sun of Righteousness, arise,
Bless the dark world with heavenly light:
Thy gospel makes the simple wise;
Thy laws are pure, thy judgments right.
6 Thy noblest wonders here we view,
In souls renewed, and sins forgiven;
Lord, cleanse my sins, my soul renew,
And make thy word my guide to heaven.

Nature and Scripture. Ps. 19.

1 BEHOLD! the lofty sky
Declares its Maker, God:
And all his starry works on high
Proclaim his power abroad.

2 The darkness and the light
Still keep their course the same;
While night to day and day to night
Divinely teach his name.

3 In every different land

Their general voice is known; They show the wonders of his hand, And orders of his throne.

4 Ye Christian lands, rejoice!
Here he reveals his word;
We are not left to nature's voice
To bid us know the Lord.

5 His statutes and commands
Are set before our eyes;
He puts his gospel in our hands,
Where our salvation lies.

6 While of thy works I sing, Thy glory to proclaim,

Accept the praise, my God, my King, In my Redeemer's name.

The Gospel of Christ.

1 GOD, in the gospel of his Son,
Makes his eternal counsels known;
"Tis here his richest mercy shines,
And truth is drawn in fairest lines.

2 Wisdom its dictates here imparts,
To form our minds, to cheer our hearts;
Its influence makes the sinner live;
It bids the drooping saint revive.
3 Our raging passions it controls,
And comfort yields to contrite souls;
It brings a better world in view,
And guides us all our journey through.
4 May this blest volume ever lie
Close to my heart, and near my eye,
Till life's last hour my soul engage,
And be my chosen heritage.

The Light and Guidance of Scripture.

1 WHEN Israel through the desert passed, A fiery pillar went before,

To guide them through the dreary waste,
And lessen the fatigues they bore.

2 Such is thy glorious word, O God:
"T is for our light and guidance given;
It sheds a lustre all abroad,

And points the path to bliss and heaven.
