PART I.

The Window.-Sabbath Eve.

IN one of the most retired parts of the town of Geneva, at the end of a small street, and very near the roof of the house, there is a window, which no one may have remarked, but which is yet well worthy of notice, as I' design to shew.

Late one Saturday night, after eleven o'clock, I was passing this street in company with a friend. The most profound silence reigned. The lights were all extinguished in the houses, with the exception of this window, which was illuminated by a small lamp placed close to the glass. "Some poor workman, very likely," said I," who, tired enough with the labour of the day, is yet forced to prolong it to the middle of the night in order to gain a painful subsistence: that is truly to earn his bread by the sweat of his brow.'
