my soul may watch for the coming of its Lord, that so my soul and body may be renewed to serve and please Thee in that state of life unto which

me.

it has been thy gracious will to call Grant that I may lie down forgiven of all my former trespasses, and free from those sins by which I have most grievously offended Thee, and so die unto them, that I may not rise to be guilty of them again; nor repeat those things of which I do most heartily repent, and which would bring down upon me thy heavy displeasure.

Hear me, O Lord, that whether I awake or sleep, at whatsoever hour Thou shalt call me to Thyself, I may joyfully put off this sinful flesh and all my earthly troubles, and be counted worthy to obtain a blessed resurrection, through the merits and

mediation of my only Saviour and Redeemer, Jesus Christ.

Amen.

PRAYER WHEN AWAKE DURING THE NIGHT.

O God, the protector of all them that trust in Thee, preserve me, I beseech Thee, from the remembrance of my daily cares, and all vain and fruitless thought for to-morrow. Continue to me thy holy keeping, whilst I am still, and know that Thou art God. Draw me nearer to my blessed Saviour, that I may have a sense of his infinite love, and believe that Thou dost hear his intercession for my sinful soul, that it may repent and turn to. Thee. Shed all comforting thoughts into my heart this night, and the dews of thy Holy Spirit, and all such holy affections as may re

commend me to thy favour, and make me meet for thy peace and blessing. O God, I yield my soul into thy hands; if it please Thee, receive me again into thy beloved sleep. Manifest Thyself unto me in recollections of the past years of thy goodness. By thy Holy Spirit give me visions of joy laid up for me in heaven, and teach me things to

come.

If I lie awake, let it be my delight to watch one hour, or many hours, with Thee, O blessed Redeemer, who dost bid me watch and pray, that I may not enter into temptation.

Send the Comforter to me, who shall show me of thy kingdom, in which none shall be weary or faint, nor have need of sleep, to renew their strength to praise Thee.

Take me into communion with thy

saints, who rest not night nor day, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come. Hallelujah, Amen.

FOR MONDAY MORNING.

1.

We must upon all occasions look to the Author of our being, and recommend ourselves to his providence and grace; and our expressions ought to be in some measure weighed and considered, when we pray to the Almighty. We must remember that God is in heaven, and we are on earth, and that a few words from a penitent and broken spirit, are more acceptable to Him than much speaking where there is no devotion in the heart.

Look unto me, and be saved. There

is no God else beside me; a just God and a Saviour. Isa. xlv. 21, 22.

Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any thing before God. Eccles. v. 2.

And it came to pass, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray. Luke xi. 1.

II.

Every prayer implies a new row and dedication of ourselves to God; for we ask all under the covenant of grace, according as we believe in Christ, and fulfil our promise of obedience.

Obey my voice, and I will be your God. Jer. vii. 23.

Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he shall hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows. Job xxii. 27.
