of serious and supreme concern. The kind encouragement which the little book has received, induces me to revise it carefully, in the hope that it may be more persuasive and expressive of true devotion, and more profitable to the welfare of souls. The Prayers have scarcely any change or additions. The Reflections are so divided, that some of them may be omitted morning or evening, should they be considered too long; the object of them is to promote the love of the Word of God, and conduce to the improvement of those means of grace which are prophetic of a state of glory.

There is one pious custom which I would earnestly recommend, to confirm the sacred impressions of the

Bible; namely, to underline such passages as upon your study of them most deeply affect the heart; verses so marked will long preserve the faith and feeling with which once we read them; and as we peruse the same chapters during successive years, the other texts in them will teach and speak to us as tenderly, till the circumstances of time have gradually brought out the full light and consolation of every word of God. In this exercise we may profit both ourselves and others: there cannot be a more touching memorial of a departed friend, than the sacred volume in which they once delighted, interspersed with these traces of the soul's dwelling in the Holy Scriptures, these pencilled notices (written by dear hands),

to show how faithfully the words above applied to their trials, or expressed their hopes or sorrows.

You will receive this Book of Prayer as a token of kindest regard, whether I am present with you, or absent from you; for my heart's desire to God for your sakes and my own is this, that I may not have lived utterly in vain; that as the Minister of Christ, I may bring, if it be but one immortal soul nearer to the source of its own endless happiness, that I may be comforted by the mutual faith of you and me; and that we may both hereafter know the certainty of those things which we have most surely believed, when God of his tender mercy shall have called us to the blessed state of everlasting life which

He has given us in his Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ.

With this prayer, believe me,

My dear Parishioners,

Your affectionate friend,

PLUMPTON WILSON.
