BLESSED High-Priest, who art able to save them to the utmost who come unto God by Thee; save me, I beseech Thee, who have no hope but in Thy merits and intercession. Amen.

CHRIST, who didst first suffer many torments, and then enter into Thy glory; make me so to suffer with Thee, that I may also be glorified with Thee. Amen.

LORD, the snares of death compass me round about; O let not the pains of hell also take hold of me: but though I find trouble, and heaviness; yet, O Lord, I beseech Thee, deliver my soul. Amen.

Amen.

God the Father, Creator of the world,

Have mercy on him (or her, or me). O God the Son, Redeemer of Mankind,

Have mercy on him.

O God the Holy Ghost, Perfecter of the Elect,

Have mercy on him.

O Holy, Blessed, and Glorious Trinity, three Persons and one God,

Have mercy on him.

Have mercy, O Lord, and spare him.

Have mercy, O Lord, and hear him.

From all his sins,

Deliver him, O Lord.

From all temptations, and the snares of the enemy,

Deliver him, O Lord.

From all impatience and repining at Thy just chastisement,
Deliver him, O Lord.

From defection of spirit, and distrust of Thy mercy,
Deliver him, O Lord.

From the fear of death, and too great a desire of life,
Deliver him, O Lord.

From distracting his mind with the things of this world, and neglecting to prepare himself for eternity,

Deliver him, O Lord.

[blocks in formation]

By Thy Death and Burial,

Deliver him, O Lord.

By Thy glorious Resurrection and Ascension,

Deliver him, O Lord.

By the grace of the Holy Ghost, the Comforter,

Deliver him, O Lord.

In the hour of Death, and in the day of Judgment,
Deliver him, O Lord.

We sinners, beseech Thee to hear us:

That it would please Thee to comfort him in his sorrow, and enable him to look beyond death, to the blessed state to which it leads;

We beseech Thee to hear us.

That it would please Thee to bring into his thoughts all Thy mercies, and by them encourage him in a confidence in Thee; We beseech Thee to hear us.

That Thou wouldst vouchsafe him the grace to order all his temporal affairs with prudence, justice, and charity; and with a free and quiet mind wholly attend to preparing himself for eternity;

We beseech Thee to hear us.

That Thou wouldst vouchsafe him the grace entirely to confess, and sincerely to repent of all his sins;

We beseech Thee to hear us.

That Thou wouldst vouchsafe him the grace heartily to forgive all those who have offended him, and satisfy to his power whoever has suffered the least injury by him;

We beseech Thee to hear us.

That, being thus reconciled to Thee and all the world, he may, with an humble and assured hope, reverently receive the Sacrament of Thy blessed Body and Blood, and firmly persevere to the end in Thy grace and favour;

We beseech Thee to hear us.

That, whatever Thy providence shall determine concerning him, he may readily submit to Thy holy will, and, whether he live or die, be always Thine;

We beseech Thee to hear us.

Son of God, we beseech Thee to hear us.

O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world,

Spare us, O Lord.

O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world,
Hear us, O Lord.

O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world,
Have mercy upon us.

Lord, have mercy upon us.

Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.

The Song of Hezekiah.

SAID in the midst of my days, I shall go to the gates of the grave: I am deprived of the residue of my years.

2 I said, I shall not see the Lord, even the Lord, in the land of the living: I shall behold man no more with him that dwelleth at rest. 3 My time is taken from me, and folded up: as the shepherd's tent. 4 My life is cut off like a weaver's web; when I yet began, He cut me down: from morning until the night Thou wilt make an end of me. 5 I was in hope until morning but as a lion so He bruised all my bones.

6 From morning until night Thou wilt make an end of me as a young swallow so shall I chatter, and shall mourn as a dove.

7 Mine eyes fail with looking upward : O Lord, I am oppressed; undertake for me.

8 What shall I say? He hath both spoken unto me, and Himself hath done it: I shall go softly all my years in the bitterness of my soul.

9 O Lord, by these things men live, and in all these things is the life of my spirit: so wilt Thou recover me, and make me to live. 10 Behold, for peace I had great bitterness: but Thou hast in love to my soul delivered it from the pit of corruption: for Thou hast cast all my sins behind Thy back.

11 For the grave cannot praise Thee, death cannot celebrate Thee they that go down into the pit cannot hope for Thy truth. 12 The living, the living, he shall praise Thee, as I do this day: the father to the children shall make known Thy truth.

13 The Lord was ready to save me therefore we will sing my songs to the stringed instruments all the days of our life in the house of the Lord.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be world without end. Amen.

WHEN I am in my health, Thou upholdest me, and shalt set

me before Thy face for ever.

LORD, who hast wounded me for my sins, and consumed me for my transgressions, by Thy late heavy and dreadful visitation; and now, in the midst of judgment remembering mercy, hast redeemed my soul from the jaws of death; I offer unto Thee myself, my soul and body, which Thou hast delivered, to be a living sacrifice unto Thee, always praising and magnifying Thy mercies in the midst of Thy Church; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE COMMENDATION OF THE SOUL.

IN the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy

Ghost.

WE

E brought nothing into this world, neither may we carry anything out of this world. The Lord giveth, and the Lord taketh away. Even as the Lord pleaseth, so cometh everything to pass. Blessed be the Name of the Lord.

INT

NTO Thy merciful hands, O Lord, we commend the soul of this Thy servant, now departing from the body: acknowledge, we meekly beseech Thee, a work of Thine own hands, a sheep of Thine own fold, a lamb of Thine own flock, a sinner of Thine own redeeming. Receive him into the blessed arms of Thy unspeakable mercy, into the sacred rest of everlasting peace, and into the glorious estate of Thy chosen saints in heaven.

God the Father, who hath created thee, God the Son, who hath redeemed thee, God the Holy Ghost, who hath infused His grace into thee, be now and evermore thy defence, assist thee in this thy last trial, and bring thee into the way of everlasting life. Amen.

CHRIST, that redeemed thee with His agony and bloody death,

have mercy upon thee and strengthen thee in this agony of death. Amen.

HRIST Jesus, that rose the third day from death, raise up thy body again in the resurrection of the just. Amen.

CH

CHRIST, that ascended into heaven, and now sitteth at the right hand of God, bring thee unto the place of eternal happiness and joy. Amen.

G

OD the Father preserve and keep thee. God the Son assist and strengthen thee. God the Holy Ghost defend and aid thee. God the Holy Trinity be ever with thee, that thy death may be precious in the sight of the Lord, with whom thou shalt live for evermore. Amen.

Then may be said plainly distinctly, and with some pauses, these ejaculatory Meditations and Prayers.

G

NO to thy rest, O my soul, for the Lord hath upholden thee. From death to life: from sorrow to joy: from a vale of misery to a paradise of mercy.

I know that my Redeemer liveth, and that I shall be raised again in the last day.

I shall walk before the Lord in the land of the living.

In Thee, O Lord, have I trusted: let me never be confounded. Make me to be numbered with Thy saints: in glory everlasting. Into Thy hands I commend my spirit: for Thou hast redeemed me, O Lord, Thou God of truth.

I am poor and needy: but the Lord careth for me.

I desire to be dissolved, and to be with Christ.

Thou art my helper and my Redeemer: make no long tarrying, O my God.

Come, Lord Jesu, come quickly.

O Lord, let it be Thy pleasure to deliver me: make haste, O Lord, to help me.

Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.

Lord, now lettest Thou Thy servant depart in peace.

O deliver him from this body of death.

Let Thy good Spirit lead him forth into the land of righteousness, into Thy holy hill and Thy heavenly kingdom.

Receive him in the arms of Thy mercy, and give him an inheritance with the Saints in light, there to reign with Thy elect Angels, Thy blessed Saints departed, Thy holy Prophets and glorious Apostles, in all joy, glory, felicity, and happiness, for ever and ever. Amen.

And these to be repeated until the soul be departed.

Then,

LAMB of God, that takest away the sins of the world, grant him Thy peace.

LORD, with whom do live the spirits of them that die; and by whom the souls of Thy servants, after they be delivered from the burden of this flesh, be in perpetual joy and felicity; We most meekly beseech Thee for this Thy servant, that having now received the absolution from all his sins which he hath committed in this world, he may escape the gates of hell, and the pains of eternal darkness; that he may for ever dwell with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, in the region of light and Thy blessed presence, where there is neither weeping nor heaviness; and that when the dreadful day of the general judgment shall come, he may rise again with the just, and receive this dead body which must now be buried in the earth, to be joined with his soul, and be made pure and incorruptible for ever after, in Thy glorious kingdom; for the merits of Thy dear Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
