BIOGRAPHICAL INDEX

TO THE

HOUSE OF COMMONS.

THE HONOURABLE GEORGE ABERCROMBY,
M. P. for the City of Edinburgh.

THIS gentleman is the eldest son of the gallant Sir Ralph Abercromby, Commander in Chief of the army in Egypt, (who received a fatal wound on the field of battle, near Alexandria, March 21, 1801,) by Mary Anne, since created Baroness Abercromby of Aboukir. He was educated at a provincial seminary in Yorkshire, under the present master of Rugby school, and then sent to finish his studies at the university of Edinburgh.

Having been originally intended for the army, he received a commission as lieutenant in the 7th regiment of foot, or royal fuzileers, then commanded by General Prescott, but resigned soon after, on more mature consideration, from a wish to dedicate himself to one of the learned professions. He accordingly became a member of the Faculty of Advocates, and, until of late, enjoyed the office of Deputy Advocate for Scotland.

Soon after he had assumed the gown, he married Montague,

B

the third daughter of Viscount Melville, by whom he has issue. In consequence of the singular merits of his father, there is a pension of L.2000 attached to the barony (to which he is next heir) for a term of years; two of his brothers are in the army, one of them has already attained the lieutenant-colonelcy of the 93d regiment of foot, with the rank of colonel in the line; the other is aid-de-camp to Major-General Sir John Moore, K. B. who served under the late Sir Ralph.

The member for Edinburgh, now sits for the first time, we believe, in the House of Commons, having lately succeeded the former Lord Advocate of Scotland, in the representation of the northern capital, the elective franchises of which are exercised by a provost, baillies, and town council, in the same manner as in the other royal burghs.

This gentleman has never yet spoken in parliament; but when a vote of censure was moved against a late treasurer of the navy, he of course divided with the minority of 216, who deemed it expedient to refer the final decision to the report of a special committee.

Mr. Abercromby's patrimonial estate is situate in Clackmannanshire, of which he is one of the principal heritors, or landed proprietors. The family seat is called Tullibody House; he also possesses Aithrey Castle, in Fifeshire.

THE RIGHT HONOURABLE CHARLES ABBOT, One of the M. P.'s for Woodstock, Oxfordshire, and Speaker of the House of Commons.

Mr. Abbot was educated at Westminster school, where he distinguished himself, while a boy, by his talents. On his removal to Christ Church, Oxford, from which university he afterwards obtained a degree, his conduct was not unworthy of his former reputation, and he accordingly was considered by his fellow students as a young man of considerable promise.

When the period arrived, at which it became necessary to

*The Right Honourable Charles Hope, who vacated his seat, on accepting the office of Lord Justice Clerk, in January

1805.
