became fools; 23 And changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to bìrds, and fourfooted beasts, and crèeping things. 24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves : 25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

ROMANS II.-1 Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art, that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest, doest the same things. 2 But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth, against them which commit such things. 3 And thinkest thou thís, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God? 4 Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness, and forbearance, and long-suffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance? 5 But after thy hardness and impenitent heart, treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath, and revelation of the righteous judgment of God; 6 Who will render to every man according to his dèeds: 7 To them who by patient continuance in welldoing, seek for glóry, and honour, and immortality; eternal life: 8 But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness; indignation and wráth, 9 Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil; of the Jew first, and also of the Gèntile; 10 But glóry, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good; to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile ;

ROMANS 11.-17 Behold, thou art called a Jew, and restest in the làw, and makest thy boast of Gòd, 18 And knowest his will, and approvest the things that are more excellent, being instructed out of the law, 19 And art confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blìnd, a light of them which are in darkness, 20 An instructor of the

foolish, a teacher of babes, which hast the form of knowledge, and of the truth in the làw: 21 Thou therefore which teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? thou that preachest, a man should not steal, dost thou steal? 22 Thou that sayest, aman should not commit adultery, dost thou commit adultery? Thou that abhorrest ídols, dost thou commit sacrilege? 23 Thou that makest thy boast of the law, through breaking the law dishonourest thou Gód? 24 For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles, through you, as it is written. 25 For circumcision verily profiteth, if thou keep the law; but if thou be a breaker of the law, thy circumcision is made ùncircumcision. 26 Therefore, if the uncircumcision keep the righteousness of the law, shall not his uncircumcision be counted for circumcision? 27 And shall not uncircumcision which is by nature, if it fulfil the law, judge thee, who by the letter and circumcision dost transgress the law? 28 For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flèsh: 29 But he is a Jew which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spìrit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of Gòd.

NONE JUSTIFIED

BY THE LAW.

ROMANS III.-9 What then? are we better than théy? Nò, in no wise for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin : 10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not òne : 11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after Gòd. 12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable: there is none that doeth good, no, not onè. 13 Their throat is an open sèpulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips 14 Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness. 15 Their feet are swift to shed blood. 16 Destruction and misery are in their ways: 17 And the way of peace have they not known. 18 There is no fear of God before their eyes. 19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guil

:

ty before God. 20 Therefore by the deeds of the law, there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. 21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; 22 Even the righteousness of God, which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all, and upon all them that believe; for there is no difference: 23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; 24 Being justified freely by his grace, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: 25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation, through faith in his blood to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; 26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus. 27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of wórks? Này; but by the law of faith. 28 Therefore we conclude, that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law. 29 Is he the God of the Jews only? is he not also of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles àlso: 30 Seeing it is one God which shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith. 31 Do we then make void the law through faíth? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.

RECONCILIATION BY CHRIST.

ROMANS V.-1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God, through our Lord Jesus Christ: 2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace where. in we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience: 4 And patience, expèrience; and experience, hòpe: 5 And hope maketh not ashamed because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. 6 For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. 8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ dìed for us. 9

Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. 10 For if when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son much more, being rèconciled, we shall be saved by his life. 11 And not only so, but we also jòy in God, through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.

WORKS OF THE FLESH AND SPIRIT.

ROMANS VIII.-1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus, hath made me free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh : 4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in ùs, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 5 For they that are after the flesh, do mind the things of the flesh but they that are after the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. 6 For to be carnally minded is death : but to be spiritually minded is lífe and peace: 7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. 8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. 9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now, if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. 10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sìn; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

THE ASSURANCE

OF A CHRISTIAN HOPE.

ROMANS VIII.-28 And we know that all things work together for good, to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. 29 For whom he did foreknów, he also did predèstinate to be conformed to the image of his Sòn, that he might be the first-born among many brethren. 30 Moreover, whom he did predestinate, them he also called and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glòrified. 31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? 32 He that spared not his own Sòn, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? 33 Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? Is it God that justifieth? 34 Who is he that condemneth? Is it Christ that díed? yea rather, that is risen again? who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercéssion for us: 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ ? shall tribúlation, or distréss, or persécution, or famine, or nakedness, or péril, or sword? 36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. 37 Này, in all these things we are more than conquerors, through him that loved us. 38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor ángels, nor princípalities, nor powers, nor things présent, nor things to còme, 39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of in Christ Jesus our Lòrd.

GOD HATH MERCY ON WHOM HE WILL.

ROMANS IX.-14 What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with Gód? God forbid. 15 For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. 16 So then, it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that rùnneth, but of God that sheweth mercy. 17 For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have
