Chap. xxvii. to fay, She is my wife, left, faid be, the men of the place fhould kill me for Rebekah; because The was fair to look upon. 8 And it came to pafs, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philiftims looked out at a window, and faw, and behold, Ifaac was fporting with Rebekah his wife. 9 And Abimelech called Ifaac, and faid, Behold, of a furety fhe is thy wife: and how faidft thou, She is my fifter? and Ifaac faid unto him, Because I laid, Left I die for her. 10 And Abimelech faid, What is this thou haft done unto us? one of the people might lightly have lien with thy wife, and thou shouldelt have brought guiltinefs upon us. 11 And Abimelech charged all bis people, faying, He that toucheth this man, or his wife, fhall furely be put to death. 12 Then Ifaac fowed in that land, and treceived in the fame year an hundred fold: and the LORD bleffed him. 13 And the man waxed great, and † went Tent go forward, and grew until he became very great. 14 For he had poffeffion of flocks, and poffef fion of herds, and great ftore of fervants; and the Philiftines envied him. andry 15 For all the wells which his fathers fervants had digged in the days of Abraham his father, the Philiftines had flopped them, and filled them with earth. 16 And Abimelech faid unto Ifaac, Go from us: for thou art much mightier then we. 17 And Ifaac depared thence, and pitched his tent in the valley of Gerar, and dwelt there. 18 And Ifaac digged again the wells of water which they had digged in the days of Abraham his father: for the Philiftines had stopped them, after the death of Abraham: and he called their names after the names by which his father had called them. 19 And Ifaacs fervants digged in the valley, Heb. and found there a well oft fpringing water. 20 And the herdmen of Gerar did ftrive with Ifaacs herdmen, faying, The water is ours: and That is, he called the name of the well Elek, becaule atenti they ftrove with him. 21 And they digged another well, and ftrove for that alfo: and he called the name of it That is, Sitnah. 8 22 And he removed from thence, and digged That is another well; and for that they ftrove not: and he called the name of it | Rehoboth: and he faid, For now the LORD hath made room for us, and we fhall be fruitful in the land. m. 23 And he went up from thence to Beer-fheba. 24 And the LORD appeared unto him the fame night, and faid, I am the God of Abraham thy father: fear not, for I am with thee, and will bless thee, and multiply thy feed for my fervant Abrahams fake. 25 And he built an altar there, and called upon the Name of the LORD, and pitched his tent there: and there Ifaacs fervants digged a well. 26 ¶Then Abimelech went to him from Gerar, and Ahuzzath one of his friends, and Phicol the chief captain of his army. 27 And Ifaac faid unto them.Wherefore come ye to me, feeing ye hate me, and have fent me away from you? 28 And they faid,+We faw certainly that the LORD was with thee: and we faid, Let there be now an oath betwixt us eve betwixt us and thee, and let us make a covenant with thee; 29tThat thou wilt do us no hurt as we have Efau is fent for venifon. not touched thee, and as we have done unto thee 31 And they rofe up betimes in the morning, and fware one to another: and Ifaac fent thein away, and they departed from him in peace. 32 And it came to pafs the fame day, that Ifaacs fervants came, and told him concerning the well which they had digged, and faid unto him, We have found water, Ifaac fendeth Efau for venison. 6 Rebekah inftru= Nd it came to that was Aold, and his eyes were dim, to that he could not fee, he called Efau his eldeft fon, and faid unto him, My fon. Lo, Tit is yet high day, neither is it time that the cattel fhould be gathered together: water ye the fheep, and go and feed them. 8 And they faid,We cannot until all the flocks be gathered together, and till they roll the ftone from the wels mouth: then we water the sheep. 9 And while he yet fpake with them, Rachel came with her fathers fheep; for fhe kept them. He ferveth for Rachel. 10 And it came to pafs,when Jacob faw Rachel, the daughter of Laban his mothers brother, and the fheep of Laban his mothers brother, that Ja cob went near, and rolled the ftone from the wells mouth, and watered the flock of Laban his mothers brother. And he heard the words of Labans fons, fay ing,Jacob hath taken away all that was our fathers, and of that which was our fathers hath he gotten all this glory. 2 And Jacob beheld the countenance ofLaban, and behold, it was not toward him tas before. 3. And the LORD faid unto Jacob,Return unday, and to the land of thy fathers, and to thy kindred, and I will be with thee. The day before. 4 And Jacob fent and called Rachel and Leah to the field unto his flock, 5 And faid unto them, I fee your fathers countenance, that it is not toward me as before: but the God of my father hath been with me. 6 And ye know that with all my power I have ferved your father, 7 And your father hath deceived me, and changed my wages ten times: but God fuffered him not to hurt me. 8 If he faid thus, The fpeckled fhall be thy wages; then all the cattel bare fpeckled: and if he faid thus, The ring-ftraked fhall be thy hire; then bare all the cattel ring-ftraked. 9 Thus God hath taken away the cattel of your father, and given them to me. to And it came to pals at the time that the cattel conceived, that I lifted up mine eyes,and law in a dream, and behold, the rams which be-goat leaped upon the cattel were ring-ftraked, fpeckled and grizled. Beriphim. + Hi5. the beart 11 And the angel of God fpake unto me in a dream, faying, Jacob and I faid, Here am I. 12 And he faid, Lift up now thine eyes, and fee, all the rams,which leap upon the cattel, are ring-ftraked, fpeckled and grizled: for I have feen all that Laban doth unto thee. 13 I am the God of Beth-el, where thou anointedft the pilar, and where thou vowedft a vow unto me: now arife,get thee out from this land, and return unto the land of thy kindred. 14 And Rachel and Leah anfwered and faid unto him, Is there yet any portion or inheri tance for us in our fathers houfe? 15 Are we not counted of him ftrangers? for he hath fold us, and hath quite devoured alfo our money. 16 For all the riches which God hath taken from our father, that is ours,and our childrens: now then whatfoever God hath faid unto thee, do. 17 Then Jacob rofe up, and fet his fons and his wives upon camels. 18 And he carried away all his cattel, and all his goods which he had gotten, the cattel of his getting,which he had gotten in Padan-aram,for to go to Ifaac his father in the land of Canaan, 19 And Laban went to fhear his sheep: and Rachel had ftolen the † images that were her fathers. 20 And Jacob ftole away † unawares to Laban Laban the Syrian, in that he told him not that he fled. 21 So he fled with all that he had,and he rofe up, and paffed over the river,and let his face toward the mount Gilead. 22 And it was told Laban on the third day, that Jacob was fled. 23 And he took his brethren with him, and 24 And God came to Laban the Syrian in a dream by night, and faid unto him, Take heed that thou fpeak not to Jacob either good or + Heb. bad. from bad. 25 Then Laban overtook Jacob. Heb. haft ftalen 27 Wherefore didft thou Aloe away fecretly, and † fteal away from me? and didft not tell me, that I might have ent thee away with mirth, me. and with fongs, with tabret, and with harp ? 28 And haft not fuffered me to kiss my fons and my daughters ? thou haft now done foolishly in fo doing, 29 It is in the power of my hand to do you hurt: but the God of your fa her fpake unto me yesternight, faying,Take thou heed that thou fpeak not to Jacob either good or bad. 30 And now though thou woulddeft needs be gon,becaule thou fore longedit after thy fathers houle, yet wherefore haft thou ftolen my gods? 31 And Jacob anfwered and faid to Laban,Becaufe I was afraid: for I faid, Peradventure thou wouldeft take by force thy daughters from me. 32 With whomfoever thou findeft thy gods,let him not live: before our brethren difcern thou what is thine with me, and take it to thee: for Jacob knew not that Rachel had ftolen them. 33 And Laban went into Jacobs tent,and into Leahs tent, and into the two maid-fervants tents: but he found them not.Then went he out of Leahs rent, and entered into Rachels tent. 34 Now Rachel had taken the images, and put them in the camels furniture, and fat upon them: and Labant fearched all the tent, but Heb. found them not. 35 And fhe faid to her father, Let it not dif pleafe my lord, that I cannot rife up before thee; for the cuftom of women is upon me: and he fearched, but found not the images. 36 And Jacob was wroth, and chode with Laban and Jacob answered and faid to Laban, What is my trefpals? what is my fin, that thou haft fo hotly pursued after me? 37 Whereas thou haft fearched all my ftuft what haft thou found of all thy houfhold fulf fet it here, before my brethren and thy brethren, that they may judge betwixt us both. 38.
