thee, and a place for thy dwelling for ever.

3 And the king turned his face, and bleffed

4 And he faid, Bleffed be the LORD God of Ifrael, who hath with his hands fulfilled that which he fpake with his mouth to my father David, faying,

5 Since the day that I brought forth my people out of the land of Egypt, I chofe no city among all the tribesof Ifrael to build an house in, that my name might be there,neither chofe I any 2 Sam man to be a ruler over my people Ifrael: 6 But I have chofen Jerufalem, that my name might be there, and have chofen David to be over my people Ifrael.

9 Notwithstanding, thou shalt not build the houfe, but thy fon which fhall come forth out of thy loins, he fhall build the houfe for my Name. 7 Moreover, Solomon hallowed the middle of

the court that was before the house of the LORD: for there he offered burnt-offerings, and the fat of the peace-offerings, because the brazen altar which Solomon had made, was not able to receive the burnt-offerings, and the meat-offerings, and the fat.

8 Alfo at the fame time Solomon kept the feaft leven days, and all Ifrael with him, a very great congregation, from the entring in of Hamath, unto the river of Egypt.

Nd when Rehoboam was come to Jerufa-* King. lem, he gathered of the houfe of Judah and 12-23,0 Benjamin an hundred and fourfcore thoufand chofen men, which were warriours, to fight a gainst Ifrael, that he might bring the kingdom fer-again to Rehoboam.

3 And they fent and called him. So Jeroboam and all Ifrael came,& fpake to Rehoboam, faying, 4 Thy father made our yoke grievous, now therefore eafe thou fomewhat the grievous vitude of thy father, and his heavie yoke that he put upon us, and we will ferve thee.

5 And he faid unto them, Come again unto me after three daies. And the people departed. 6 And king Rehoboam took couniel with the old men that had ftood before Solomon his father, while he yet lived, faying, What counfel give ye me, to return anfwer to this people?

7 And they fpake unto him, faying, If thou be kinde to this people, and please them, and fpeak good words to them, they will be thy fervants for ever.

8 But he forfook the counfel which the old men gave him, and took counfel with the young men that were brought up with him, that stood before him.

9 And he faid unto them, What advice give ye that we may return answer to this people, which have fpoken to me, faying, Eafe fomewhat the yoke that thy father did put upon us?

10 And the young men that were brought up with him, fpake unto him, faying, Thus fhalt thou anfwer the people that fpake unto thee, faying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it fomewhat lighter for us: thus fhalt thou fay unto them, My little finger fhall be thicker then my fathers loins.

11 For whereas my father † put a heavy yoke upon you, I will put more to your yoke: my father chaftiled you with whips, but I will chaftife you with fcorpions.

12 So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day, as the king bade, Gying, Come again to me on the third day.

2 But the word of the LORD came to Shemajah the man of God, faying,

3 Speak unto Rehoboam the fon of Solomon king of Judah, and to all Ifrael in Judah and Benjamin, faying,

4 Thus faith the LORD, Ye fhall not go up, nor fight against your brethren return every man to his houfe, for this thing, is done of me. And they obeyed the words of the LORD, and returned from going against Jeroboam.

51 And Rehoboam dwelt in Jerufalem, and built cities for defence in Judah.

6 He built even Beth-lehem, and Etam, and Tekoa,

7 And Beth-zur, and Shoco,and Adullam, 8 And Gath, and Marefha, and Ziph, 9 And Adoraim, and Lachifh, and Azekah, To And Zorah,and Ajalon,and Hebron, which are in Judah and in Benjamin, fenced cities.

II And he fortified the ftrong holds, and put captains in them, and flore of victual, and of pyl, and wine.

12 And in every feveral city be put fhields, and fpears, and made them exceeding ftrong, having Iudah and Benjamin on his fide.

13 And the priefts & the Levites that were in all Ifrael,treforted to him out of all their coafts. Hebpretented 14 (For the Levites left their fuburbs,and their themfelve poffeflion,and came to Iudah and Ierufalem: for to him. Ieroboam and his fons had caft them off from Chap. executing the priefts office unto the LORD. 15 And he ordained him priefts for the high places, and for the devils, and for the calves which he had made.) 17 So they ftrengthened the kingdom of Judah, and niade Rehoboam the fon of Solomon frong three years: for three years they walked in the way of David and Solomon.

18 And Rehoboam took him Mahalath the daughter of ferimoth the fon of David to wife, and Abihail the daughter of Eliab the fon of Jeffe:

19 Which bare him children; Ieush, and Shamariah, and Zaham.
