VESPER PSALMS.

IN THE ORDER OF THE MONTH.

[ocr errors]

First Sunday.

Cantate Domino.-Psalm xcviii.

SING unto the Lord a new song; for he hath done marvellous things.

With his own right hand, and with his holy arm, hath he gotten himself the victory.

The Lord declared his salvation; his righteousness hath he openly showed in the sight of the heathen.

He hath remembered his mercy and truth toward the house of Israel; and all the ends of the world have seen the salvation of our God.

Show yourselves joyful unto the Lord, all ye lands; sing, rejoice, and give thanks.

Praise the Lord upon the harp; sing to the harp with a psalm of thanksgiving.

With trumpets also and shawms, O show yourselves joyful before the Lord, the King.

Let the sea make a noise, and all that therein is; the round world, and they that dwell therein.

Let the floods clap their hands, and let the hills be joyful together before the Lord; for he cometh to judge the earth.

With righteousness shall he judge the world, and the people with equity.

Or this Hymn :

PRAISE.

AUDED be thy name forever,

Thou of life the Guard and Giver!
Thou who slumberest not, nor sleepest,
Blest are they thou kindly keepest;
God of stillness and of motion,
Of the rainbow and the ocean,
Of the mountain, rock, and river,
Blessed be thy name forever.
God of evening's yellow ray;
God of yonder dawning day,
That rises from the distant sea,
Like breathings from eternity;
Thine the flaming sphere of light,
Thine the darkness of the night;
God of life, that fade shall never,
Glory to thy name forever!

Second Sunday.

Bonum est confiteri.—Psalm xcii.

83.

is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord, and to sing praises unto thy Name, O Most Highest;

To tell of thy loving-kindness early in the morn ing, and of thy truth in the night season;

Upon an instrument of ten strings, and upon the lute; upon a loud instrument, and upon the harp.

For thou, Lord, hast made me glad through thy works; and I will rejoice in giving praise for the operations of thy hands.

Or this Hymn :

COME, HOLY SPIRIT.

Himid

OLY Spirit, source of gladness,

8s & 7s.

Shine amid the clouds of night;

O'er our weariness and sadness

Breathe thy life and shed thy light!
Send us thine illumination,

Banish all our fears at length,
Rest upon this congregation,
Spirit of unfailing strength.

Let that love which knows no measure,
Now in quickening showers descend,
Bringing us the richest treasure,
Man can wish or God can send;
Hear our earnest supplication,
Every struggling heart release,
Rest upon this congregation,
Spirit of eternal peace!

Third Sunday.

Deus misercatur.-Psalm lxvii.

OD be merciful unto us, and bless us, and show

GOD

us the light of his countenance, and be merciful unto us;

That thy way may be known upon earth, thy saving health among all nations.

Let the people praise thee, O God; yea, let all the people praise thee.

Olet the nations rejoice and be glad; for thou shalt judge the folk righteously, and govern the nations upon earth.

Let the people praise thee, O God; yea, let all the people praise thee.

Then shall the earth bring forth her increase; and God, even our own God, shall give us his blessing.

God shall bless us; and all the ends of the world shall fear him.

PRAISE

[blocks in formation]

RAISE to thee, thou great Creator!
Praise to thee from every tongue;
Join, my soul, with every creature,
Join the universal song.

Father, Source of all compassion,
Pure, unbounded grace is thine:
Hail the God of our salvation!
Praise him for his love divine.

For ten thousand blessings given,
For the hope of future joy,

Sound his praise through earth and heaven,
Sound Jehovah's praise on high.

Joyfully on earth adore him,

Till in heaven our songs we raise;
There, enraptured, fall before him,
Lost in wonder, love, and praise.

Fourth Sunday.

Benedic, anima mea.-Psalm ciii.

RAISE the Lord, O my soul; and all that is within me, praise his holy Name.

Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:

Who forgiveth all thy sin, and healeth all thine infirmities;

Who saveth thy life from destruction, and crowneth thee with mercy and loving-kindness.

O praise the Lord, ye Angels of his, ye that excel in strength; ye that fulfil his commandment, and hearken unto the voice of his word.

O praise the Lord, all ye his hosts; ye servants of his that do his pleasure.

O speak good of the Lord, all ye works of his, in all places of his dominion: praise thou the Lord, O my soul.

Or this Hymn:

PRAYER IN AFFLICTION.

8s & 7s.

IGHT of those whose dreary dwelling
Borders on the shades of death,

Come, and by thy love's revealing,
Dissipate the clouds beneath;
The new heaven and earth's Creator,
In our deepest darkness rise,
Scattering all the night of nature,
Pouring eyesight on our eyes.
Still we wait for thine appearing;
Life and joy thy beams impart,
Chasing all our fears, and cheering
Every poor, benighted heart:
Come, and manifest the favor

Promised to thy ransomed race;
Come, thou glorious God and Saviour,
Come, and bring thy gospel grace.
