have commanded you; and lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

On days that commemorate the Apostles, and at other times, the following creed will have interest as being the oldest and the most universal of Church confessions, and may be used at discretion to illustrate the general belief of the Christian Church. The portions added to the ancient words in the Roman and Reformed Churches are marked in Italics.

THE APOSTLES' CREED.*

I believe in God the Father Almighty:
[Maker of heaven and earth :]

And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord:
Who was [conceived] by the Holy Ghost, born of the
Virgin Mary,

Suffered under Pontius Pilate,

Was crucified [dead] and buried,

[He descended into Hell,]

The third day he rose again from the dead, He ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of [God] the Father [Almighty,]

From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost:
The Holy [Catholic] Church:

[The Communion of Saints:]

The forgiveness of sins:

The resurrection of the body: [And the life everlasting.]

Amen.

HYMNS.

MORNING AND EVENING.

Morning Hymn.

11s & 10s.

1 Now, when the dusky shades of night retreating,
Before the sun's red banner swiftly flee;
Now, when the terrors of the dark are fleeting,
O Lord! we lift our thankful hearts to thee.

2 To thee, whose word, the fount of life unsealing, When hill and dale in thickest darkness lay, Awoke bright rays across the dim earth stealing,

And bade the even and morn complete the day.

3 Look from the tower of heaven, and send to cheer us,
Thy light and truth to guide us onward still;
Still let thy mercy as of old be near us,
And lead us safely to thy holy hill.

4 So when that morn of endless light is waking,
And shades of evil from its splendor flee,
Safe may we rise, the earth's dark breast forsaking,
Through all the long bright day to dwell with thee.

[blocks in formation]

1 Now that the sun is beaming bright,

Implore we, bending low,

That he, the uncreated Light,
May guide us as we go.

C. M.

3.

2 No sinful word, nor deed of wrong,
Nor thoughts that idly rove,

But simple truth be on our tongue,
And in our hearts be love.

.3 And while the hours in order flow,
Securely keep, O God,

Our hearts, beleaguered by the foe,
That tempts our every road.

4 And grant that to thine honor, Lord,
Our daily toil may tend;

That we begin it at thy word,
And in thy favor end.

Prayer.

1 THOU Brightness of the Father's ray,
True Light of light, and Day of day :
Light's fountain and eternal spring :
Thou Morn the morn illumining!

2 Glide in, thou very Sun divine;
With everlasting brightness shine:
And shed abroad on every sense
The Spirit's light and influence.

3 Thee, Father, let us seek aright:
The Father of perpetual light:
The Father of Almighty grace:
Each wile of sin away to chase.

4 Our acts with courage do thou fill:
Blunt thou the tempter's tooth of ill:
Misfortune into good convert,
Or give us grace to bear unhurt.

5 And Christ, our daily food be nigh,
And Faith our daily cup supply:

So may we quaff, to calm and bless,
The Spirit's rapturous holiness.

"The day that God hath blessed."

H. M.

1 AWAKE, ye saints, awake!

And hail this sacred day;

In loftiest songs of praise

Your joyful homage pay :

Come, bless the day that God hath blest,
The type of heaven's eternal rest.

2 On this auspicious morn

The Lord of life arose;
He burst the bars of death,

And vanquished all our foes;
And now he pleads our cause above,
And reaps the fruit of all his love.

3 Hither, from earth's remotest end,
Lo! the redeemed of God ascend,
Their tribute hither bring:

Here, crowned with everlasting joy,
In hymns of praise their tongues employ,
And hail th' immortal King.

The Morning and Evening Light.

1 WHEN, streaming from the eastern skies,
The morning light salutes mine eyes,
O Sun of righteousness divine,
On me with beams of mercy shine!
Oh! chase the clouds of guilt away,
And turn my darkness into day.

2 When each day's scenes and labors close,
And wearied nature seeks repose,
