And to this duty methinks we should need no other exhortation than that of the Psalmist; and if we will not do it for love let us do it for fear; O wor-Pfal. xcvi. ship the Lord in the beauty of holiness, 9. fear before him all the earth.

But love is a more generous principle than fear: and how thankful ought we to be to our heavenly Father for having brought us up in the bosom of the best and pureft church upon earth? and how can we be duly sensible of our own happiness without being desirous to communicate it to others? and what a pious and charitable work therefore is this of Yours in educating so many young children in the principles of the church of England, who might otherwise be made a prey to a false religion, or abandon'd to no religion?

Go on then in the beneficent design that You have undertaken: it is a sort of godlike office, out of the mouths of babes and

MAT. XXIII. 13.

Woe unto you Scribes and Pharisees,

hypocrites.

A

BUNDANCE of exhortations and reproofs there are

in scripture, which tho' directed to particular persons, are yet of general use and importance. Even those passages, which seem to be more peculiarly adapted to certain persons and certain times, may yet afford instruction to all persons and all times. And of this kind particularly is our Saviour's discourse in the 23d chapter of St. Matthew, which tho' pointed directly at the Scribes and Pharisees, may yet serve for a perpetual warning against the vices of all those who shall tread in their steps. The Scribes were the great doctors and expounders of the Jewish
