And to

this duty methinks we fhould need

no other exhortation than that of the Pfalmift; and if we will not do it for love let us do it for fear; O wor-Pfal. xcvi. fhip the Lord in the beauty of holiness,9. fear before him all the earth.

But love is a more generous principle than fear: and how thankful ought we to be to our heavenly Father for having brought us up in the bofom of the beft and pureft church upon earth? and how can we be duly fenfible of our own happiness without being defirous to communicate it to others? and what a pious and charitable work therefore is this of Yours in educating fo many young children in the principles of the church of England, who might otherwise be made a prey to a false religion, or abandon'd to no religion?

Go on then in the beneficent defign that You have undertaken: it is a fort of godlike office, out of the mouths of babes and fucklings to ordain ftrength, 2 Cor. ix. and perfect praife: And every man according as he purpofeth in his heart, fo let him give, not grudgingly or of neceffity; for God loveth a chearful giver. And what chriftian can have the heart to refufe, when he remembers thofe memorable words of Mat. xviii. Our Bleffed Saviour? Whofo fhall receive one fuch little child in my name, re-xxv. ceiveth me. And again, Verily I Say unto You, In as much as ye have done it unto one of the leaft of thefe my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

Woe unto you Scribes and Pharifees, hypocrites.

A

BUNDANCE of exhortations and reproofs there are in fcripture, which tho' directed to particular persons, are yet of general ufe and importance. Even thofe paffages, which seem to be more peculiarly adapted to certain perfons and certain times, may yet afford inftruction to all perfons and all times. And of this kind particularly is our Saviour's difcourfe in the 23d chapter of St. Matthew, which tho' pointed directly at the Scribes and Pharifees, may yet ferve for a perpetual warning against the vices of all thofe who fhall tread in their fteps. The Scribes were the great doctors and expounders of the Jewish
