struggling, was kept down; now, however, like a restrained stream which had found a vent, it flowed forth. Clasping Isaac to his bosom, the venerable patriarch wept over him tears of joy. Now they could return to Beer-sheba, to glad the eyes of the expecting and anxious mother.

But ere they descended from that memorable mount, Abraham gave it the name-commemorative, not so much of what he had done, as of what the LORD would do in that place—Jehovahjireh; that is, the Lord will provide. And God did provide, 2000 years after, in that very spot, a LAMB for sacrifice, of nobler name and richer blood than was ever offered on patriarchal or priestly altars.

Thus did Abraham, by his unwavering faith, earn for himself the distinguished title of Father of the Faithful, among men. A title of distinction higher than even this, and higher far than ever mortal bore, God gave him, when he called him, ABRAHAM MY FRIEND.

But now the scene must close. Sarah died, when an hundred and seven and twenty years old, and Abraham died when an hundred threescore and fifteen years old; and his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, where Abraham buried Sarah.

After the death of Sarah, Abraham, concerned for the future welfare of his son, sent his faithful Damascene servant to seek a wife for Isaac in Mesopotamia among his own kindred. Eliezer returned, bringing Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel, whom Isaac married-the mother of Esau and Jacob..

The life of Isaac was peaceful. He appears to have been an amiable man, fond of retirement and meditation. He died in peace when an hundred and fourscore years old, and his sons, Esau and Jacob, buried him.
