Chap. 1. the month, that Mofes fpake unto the childrea of Ifrael, according unto all that the LORD had given him in commandment unto them;

4 After he had flain Sibon the king of the Amorites, which dwelt in Heihbon, and Og the king of Bathan, which dwelt at Ashtaroth in Edrei

5 On this fide Jordan, in the land of Moab, began Mofes to declare this law, faying,

The LORD our God fpake unto us in Horeb, faying, Ye have dwelt long enough in thas, mount:

7 Turn you, and take your journey, and go to the mount of the Amorites, and unto all the places nigh thereunto in the plain, in the hills, and in the vale, and in the fouth, and by the sea-fide, to the land of the Canaanites, and unto Lebanon, unto the great river, the river Euphrates.

8 Behold, I have fet the land before you: go in and poffefs the land which the LORD ware unto your fathers, Abraham, Ifaac, and Jacob, to give unto them, and to their feed

after them.

And I fpake unto you at that time, fay. ing, I am not able to bear you myself alone. To The LORD your God hath multiplied you, and, behold, ye are this day as the stars of heaven for mulcitude.

(The LORD God of your fathers make you thousand times fo many more as ye are, and bless you, as he hath promifed you!)

12 How can I myself alone bear your cum brance, and your burden, and your trife?

13 Take ye wife men and under/tanding, and known among your tribes, and i will make them rulers over you.

14 And ye answered me, and faid, The thing which thou haft spoken is good for us to do.

#5 So I took the chief of your tribes, wife men, and known, and made them heads over you,captains over choulands, and captains over hundreds, and captains over fifties, and cap tains overtens, and officers among yourtribes. 16 And I charged your judges at that time, faying, Hear the caufes between your brethren, and judge righteously between every man and his brother, and the ftranger that is with him.

17 Ye thall not refpect perfons in judgment, but ye thall hear the mall as well as the great; ye thall not be afraid of the face of man, for the judgment is God's and the cause that is too hard for you, bring it unto me, and I will hear it.

18 And I commanded you at that time all the things which ye fhould do.

19 And when we departed from Horeb, we went through all that great and terrible wilderness, which ye faw by the way of the mountain of the Amorites, as the LORD our God commanded us; and we came to Kadefh-barnea.

20. And I faid unto you, Ye are come unto the mountain of the Amorites, which the LORD our God doth give unto us.

21 Bobold, the LORD thy God hath fet the land before thee: go up and poffefs it, as the LORD God of thy fathers hath faid unto thee; fear not, neither be difcouraged.

22 And ye came near unto me every one of you, and faid, We will fend men before us, and they thail fearch us out the land, and being as word again by what way we must

hory of God's promije.

go up, and into what cities we fhall come. 23 And the faying pleafed me well: and I took twelve men of you, one of a tribe.

24 And they turned, and went up into the mountain, and came unto the valley of Eth-col, and fearched it out

25 And they took of the fruit of the land in their hands, and brought it down unto us, and brought us word again, and fad, It is a good land which the LORD our God doth give us.

26 Notwithstanding, ye would not go up. but rebelled against the commandment of the LORD your God.

27 And ye murmured in your tents, and faid, Because the LORD hated us, he hath brought us forth out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us.

28 Whither thall we go up? Our brethren have difcouraged our heart, faying, The peo ple is greater and taller than we; the cities are great, and walled up to heaven; and, moreover, we have feca the fons of the Ana kims there.

29 Then I faid unto you, Dread not, nel. ther be afraid of them.

30 The LORD your God, which goeth be. fore you, he thall fight for you, according to all that he did for you in Egypt before your

eyes;

31 And in the wildernefs, where thou haft feen how that the LORD thy God bare thee as a man doth bear his fon, in all the way that ye went, until ye came into this place.

32 Yet in this thing ye did not believe the LORD your God,

33 Who went in the way before you, to fearch you out a place to pitch your tents in, in fire by night to thew you by what way ye fhould go, and in a cloud by day.

34 And the LORD heard the voice of your words, and was wroth, and fware, faying,

35 Surely there thall not one of thefe mea of this evil generation fee that good land which I fware to give unto your fathers;

36 Save Caleb the ton of Jepauaneh, he fhall fee it; and to him will I give the land that he hath trodden upon, and to his chil dren, because he hath wholly followed the LORD.

37 Alfo the LORD was angry with me for your fakes, saying, Thou also fhalt not go in thither.

38 But Joshua the fon of Non, which ftandeth before thee, he shall go in thither encourage him; for he thali caufe Ifrael to inherit it.

39 Moreover, your little ones, which y faid fhould be a prey, and your children, which in that day had no knowledge between good and evil, they shall go in thither, and unto them will I give it, and they shall pos. fefs it.

40 But as for you, turn ye, and take your journey into the wilderness, by the way of the Red fea.

ORD

41 Then ye anfw red and faid unto me,. We have tinned against the LORD, we will go up and fight, according to all that the our God commanded us. And when ye had girded on every man his weapons of war, ye were ready to go up into the hili.

42 And the LORD faid unto me, Say unto them. Go not up, neither fight, for I am note among you; left ye be smittes betore your enemies.

A repetition of

DEUTERONOMY.

43 So I fpake unto you, and ye would not hear, but rebelled against the commandment of the LORD, and went prefu.nptuously up into the hill.

44 And the Amorites which dwelt in that mountain came out against you, and chafed you as bees do, and defroyed you in Seir, even unto Hormah.

45 And ye returned, and wept before the LORD; but the LORD would not hearken to your voice, nor give ear unto you.

46 So ye abode in Kadefh many days, according unto the days that ye abode there. CHAP. II.

The flory is continued touching the Edomtes, the Moabites, vŋ and the Ammonites. HEN we turned, and

Tinto the wilderness by the way of the Red fea, as the LORD fpake unto me: and we compaffed mount Seir many days.

2 And the LORD fpake unto me, faying, 3 Ye have compaffed this mountain long enough turn you northward.

4 And command thou the people, faying, Ye are to país through the coat of your bre thren the children of Efau, which dwell in Seir, and they shall be afraid of you: take ye good heed unto yourselves therefore.

5 Meddle not with them; for I will not give you of their land, no not fo much as a foot-breadth: because I have given mount Seir unto Efau for a poffcition.

6 Ye shall buy meat of them for money, that ye may eat; and ye thall alfo buy water of them for money, that ye may drink.

7 For the LORD thy God hath bleed thee in all the works of thy hand: he knoweth thy walking through this great wilderness: thefe forty years the LORD thy God hath been with thee; thou haft lacked nothing.

8 And when we paffed by from our brethren the children of Efau, which dwelt in Seir, through the way of the plain from Elath, and from Ez on-gaber, we turned, and pailed by the way of the wilderne's of Moab.

9 And the LORD faid unto me, Dittrefs not the Moabites, neither contend with them in battle; for I will not give thee of their land for a poffeffion, becaufe I have given Ar unto the children of Lot for a poffefion.

10 The Emims dwelt therein in times paft, a people great, and many, and tall as the Anakims;

11 Which also were accounted giants, as the Anakims, but the Moabites call them Emims.

12 The Horims alfo dwelt in Seir before time, but the children of Efau fucceeded them when they had destroyed them from before them, and dwelt in their ftead, as Ifrael did unto the land of his poffeibion, which the LORD gave unto them.

13 Now rife up, faid I, and get you over the brook Zered: and we went over the brook 2cred.

14 And the space in which we came from Kadesh-barnea, until we were come over the brook Zered, was thirty and eight years, until all the generation of the men of war were wafted out from among the hoft, as the LORD Sware unto them.

15 For indeed the hand of the LORD was against them, to destroy them from among the hot, until they were confumed.

16S it came to pafs, when all the men * war were confumed and dea i from among

* former things. 17 That the LORD fpake unto me, faying, 18 Thou art to pass over through Ar, the coast of Moab, this day.

19 And when thou comeft nigh over agains the children of Ammon, diftrefs them not, nor meddle with them: for I will not give thee of the land of the children of Ammon any poffeffion, because I have given it unto the children of Lot for a poffe.lion.

20 (That alfo was accounted a land of giants: giants dwelt therein in old time, and the Ammonites call them Zamzummims;

21 A people great, and many, and tall as the Anakims; but the LORD deftroyed them before them, and they fucceeded them, and dwelt in their flead:

22 he did children of Efau

dwelt in seir, when he destroyed the whims from before them; and they fucceeded them, and dwelt in their stead, even unto this day:

23 And the Avims, which dwelt in Haze. rim, even unto Azzah, the Caphtorims, which came forth out of Caphtor, destroyed them, and dwelt in their ftead.)

24 Rife ye up, take your journey, and país over the river Arnon: behold. I have given into thy hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Hethbon, and his land; begin to poffefs it, and contend with him in battle.

25 This day will begin to put the dread of thee and the fear of thee upon the nations that are under the whole heaven, who thall hear report of thee, and thall tremble and be in anguish because of thee.

26 And I fent meffengers ont of the wil dernels of Kedemoth unto Sihon king of Heshbon, with words of peace, faying,

27 Let me pafs through thy land: I will ga along by the high-way, I will neither turn unto the right hand nor to the left.

28 Thou shalt fell me meat for money, that 1 may eat; and give me water for money, that I may drink: only I will pass through on my feet,

29 (As the children of Efau which dwell in Seir, and the Moabites which dwell in Ar, did unto me,) until 1 fhall pafs over Jordan, into the land which the LORD our God giveth us.

30 But Sihon king of Hefhbon would not let us pafs by him: for the LORD thy God har dened his fpirit, and made his heart obftinate, that he might deliver him into thy hand, as appeareth this day.

31 And the LORD faid unto me, Behold, I have begun to give Sihon and his lant betore thee: begin to poffefs, that thou mayeft in herit his land.

32 Then Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, to fight at Jahaz.

33 And the LORD our God delivered him before us, and we fmote him, and his fons, and all his people.

34 And we took all his cities at that time, and utterly detroyed the men, and the wo men, and the little ones, of every city; we left none to remain:

35 Only the cattle we took for a prey unto ourselves, and the spoil of the cities which we took.

36 From Aroer, which is by the brink of the river of Arnon, and from the city that is by the river, even unto Gilead, there was not one city too ftrong for us: the LORD our God delivered all unto us:

27 Only unto the land of the children of AMMON

Of Og king of Baban, 23 Mofes's prayer to enter into the land: at he is permitted to feeit. THEN we turned, and went up the way to Bahan: and Og the king of Bathan came out against us, he and all his people, to battle

at Edrei.

2 And the LORD faid unto me, Fear him nos: for I will deliver him, and all his people, and his land, into thy hand; and thou thalt du umo hini as thou didit unto Sihon king of the Amorites, which dwelt at Hethbon.

3 So the LORD our God delivered into our hands Og alfo the king of Bafhan, and all his people: and we fmote him, until noue was left to him remaining.

4 And we look all his cities at that time; there was not a city which we took not from them, threelcore cities, all the region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bahan.

5. All these cities were fenced with high walls, gates, and bars, befide unwalled towns

a great many.

And we utterly deftroyed them, as we did unto Sihon king of Hethoon, utterly deftroying the men, women, and children, of every city. 7 But all the cattle, and the fpoil of the cities, we took for a prey to ourselves..

8 And we took at that time out of the hand of the two kings of the Amorites, the land that was on this fide Jordan, from the river of Arnon unto mount Hermon ;

9(Which Hermon the Sidonians call Sirion; and the Amorites call it Shenir;)

10 All the cities of the plain, and all Gilead, and all Bathan, unto Salcah and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bathan:

11 For only Og king of Bathan remained of the remnant of giants; behold his beditead suas a bedileal of iron: is it not in Raboath of the children of Ammon? nine cubits was

the length thereof, and four cubits the breadth

of it, after the cubit of a man.

12 And this land which we poffeffed at that time, from Aroer, which is by the river Arnon, and halt mount Gilead, and the cities thereof, gave I unto the Reubenites, and to the Gadites.

13 And the rest of Gilead, and all Bafhan, being the kingdom of Og, gave I unto the halt-cribe of Manaffeh; all the region of Argoo, with all Eathan, watch was called The Hand of giants.

14 Jair the fon of Manaffeh took all the country of Argob, unto the coats of Gethuri, and Maachathi, and called them after his own name, Bathan-havoth-jair, unto this day. 15 Andi gave Gilead umo Machir. 16 And unto the Reubenites, and unto the Gadites, 1 gave from Gilead even unto the river Arnon, half the valley, and the border, even dato the river jabook, which is the border of the children of ammon;

17 The plain alfo, and Jordan, and the coat thereof, from Chinnereth even unto the Sea of the plain, even the falt-fea, under Athioth-pifgah caftward.

18 And I commanded you at that time, faying, The LORD your God hath given you this land to poffefs it: ye thall pafs over 10 armed before your brethren the children of track, all that are meet for the was.

former things.

19 But your wives, and your little ones, and your cattle, for I know that ye have much cattle,) thall abide in your cities which I have given you,

20 Until the LORD have given rest unto your brethren, as well as unto you, and until they alfo poffefs the land which the LORD your God hath given them beyond Jordan: and then thall ye return every man unto his poffeffion which I have given you.

21 And I commanded Joshua at that time, laying, Thine eyes have feen all that the LORD your God hath done unto these two kings: fo fhall the LORD do unto all the kingdoms whither thou paifeft.

22 Ye fhall not fear them: for the LORD your God he thall fight for you.

23 And I befought the LORD at that time, faying,

24 O Lord GOD, thou haft begun to fhew thy fervant thy greatnefs, and thy mighty hand: for what god is there in heaven or in earth that can do according to thy works, and according to thy might?

25 I pray thee let me go over and fee the goodly land that is beyond Jordan,that good. Ty mountain, and Lebanon."

26 But the LORD was wroth with me for your fakes, and would not hear me: and the LORD faid tato me, Let it furtice thee; fpeak no more unto me of this marter.

27 Get thee up unto the top of Pifgah, and lift up thine eyes weftward, and northward, and fouthward, and eastward, and behold i with thine eyes: for thou shalt not go over this Jordan.

28 But charge Joshua, and encourage him. and ftrengthen him; for he thall go over be. fore this people, and he thall caufe them to inherit the land which thou shalt fee.

29 So we abode in the valley over againft Beth-peor.

hath statutes and judgments fo righteous, as all this law which I fet before you this day?

9 Only take heed to thy felf, and keep thy foul diligently, left thou forget the things which thine eyes have feen, and left they depart from thy hear all the days of thy life; but teach them thy fons, and thy fons fons: 10 Specially the day that thou ftcodeft before the LORD thy God in Horeb, when the LORD faid unto me, Gather me the people together, and I will make them hear my words, That they may learn to fear me all the days that they shall live upon the earth, and that they may teach their children.

11 And ye came near, and flood under the mountain, and the mountain burned with fire unto the midst of heaven, with darkness, clouds, and thick darknefs.

12 And the LORD spake unto you out of the midst of the fire: ye heard the voice of the words, but faw no fimilitude; only ye beard a voice.

13 And he declared unto you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, even ten commandments; and he wrote them up. en two tables of tone.

14 And the LORD commanded me at that time to teach you ftatutes and judgments, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go over to poffefs it.

15 Take ye therefore good heed unto your felves, (for ye faw no manner of fimilitude on the day that the LORD fpake unto you in Horeb out of the midit of the fire,)

16 Left ye corrupt yourselves, and make you a graven image, the fimilitude of any figure, the likeness of male or female;

17 The likenefs of any beaft that is on the earth, the likencfs of any winged fowl that theth in the air;

18 The likeness of any thing that creepeth on the ground, the likenefs of any fish that is in the waters beneath the earth:

19 And left thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou feeft the fun, and the noon, and the stars, even all the hoft of heaven, thouldeft be driven to worship them, and ferve them, which the LORD thy God hath divided unto all nations under the whole heaven.

20 Put the LORD hath taken you, and brought you forth out of the iron furnace, ven cut of Egypt, to be unto him a people of inheritance, as ye are this day.

21 Furthermore, the LORD was angry with me for your fakes, and fware that I thould hot go over Jordan, and that I fhould not go in unto that good land which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.

22 But I must die in this land, I must not go over jordan but ye shall go over, and poffels that good land.

23 Take heed unto yourselves, left ye forget the covenant of the LORD your God, which he made with you, and make you a graven Image, or the likenefs of any thing which the LORD thy God hath forbidden thee.

24 For the LORD thy God is a confuming fre, even a jealous God.

25 When thou shalt beget children, and children's childrey, and shalt have remained long in the land, and that corrupt yourselves, and make a graven image, or the likenefs cf ything, and thall do evil in the fight of the In thy God, to provoke him to anger;

people to obediëne? 26 I call heaven and earth to witness again you this day, that ye shall foon utterly perită from off the land whereunto ye go over Jor dan to poffefs it; ye fhall not prolong your days upon it, but fhall utterly be deftroy. ed.

27 And the LORD fhall fcatter you aniong the nations, and ye thall be left few in num ber among the heathen, whither the LORD fhall lead you.

28 And there ye fhall ferve gods, the work of men's hands, wood and ftone, which nei ther fee, nor hear, nor eat, nor smell.

29 But if from thence thou shalt feek the LORD thy God, thou thalt find him, if thou feek him with all thy heart, and with all thy foul.

30 When thou art in tribulation, and all there things are come upon thee, even in the latter days, if thou turn to the LORD thy God, and thalt be obedient unto his voice,

31 (For the LORD thy God is a merciful God,) he will not forfake thee, neither de ftroy thee, nor forget the covenant of thy fathers, which he fware unto them.

32 For ask now of the days that are past, which were before thee fince the day that God created man upon the earth, and afi from the one fide of heaven unto the other, whe ther there hath been any fuch thing as this great thing is, or hath been heard like it?

33 Did ever people hear the voice of God fpeaking out of the midst of the fire, as thou haft heard, and live?

34 Or hath God affayed to go and take him a nation from the midt of another nation, by temptations, by figns, and by wonders, and by war, and by a mighty hand, and by a ftretched-out arm, and by great terrors, ac cording to all that the LORD your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes?

35 Unto thee it was fhewed, that thou mightert know that the LORD he is God; there is none elfe befides him.

36 Out of heaven he made thee to hear his voice, that he might inftruct thee; and upon earth he thewed thee his great fire, and thou heardeft his words out of the midst of the fire.

37 And because he loved thy fathers, therefore he chofe their feed after them, and brought thee out in his fight with his mighty power out of Egypt;

38 To drive out nations from before thee, greater and mightier than thou art, to bring thee in, to give thee their land for an inhe ritance, as if is this day.

39 Know therefore this day, and confider it in thine heart, that the LORD he is God in heaven above, and upon the earth beneath; there is none elfe.

40 Thou shalt keep therefore his ftatutes and his commandments, which I command theethis day, that it may go well with thee, and with thy children after thee, and that thon mayest prolong thy days upon the earth, which the LORD thy God giveth thee, for ever.

41 Then Mofes fevered three cities on this fide Jordan toward the fun-rifing;

The covenant in Horeb. 6 The ten com *mandments.22 Mofes receiveth the law.

AND Mofes called all Ifrael, and faid unto them, Hear, 0 Ifrael, the ftatutes and judgments which I fpeak in your ears this day, that ye may learn them, and keep and do them.

2 The LORD our God made a covenant with us in Horeb.

3 The LORD made not this covenant with our fathers, but with us, even us, who are all of us here alive this day.

4 The LORD talked with you face to face in the mount, out of the midft of the fire,

5 (1 food between the LORD and you at that time, to fhew you the word of the LORD: for ye were afraid by reafon of the fire, and went not up into the mount,) faying,

7 Thou shalt have none other gods before

8 Thou shalt not make thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waters beneath the earth:

9 Thou shalt not bow down thyfelt unto them, nor ferve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, vifiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me,

15 And remember that thou waft a fervant in the land of Egypt, and that the LORD thy God brought thee out thence, through a mighty hand, and by a stretched-out arms therefore the LORD thy God commanded thee to keep the fabbath-tay.

16 Honour thy father and thy mother, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee: that thy days may be prolonged, and that It may go well with thee, in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee. 17 Thou shalt not kill.

18 Neither thalt thou commit adultery, 19 Neither fhalt thou fteal.

20 Neither halt thou bear falfe witness against thy neighbour.

21 Neither thalt thou defire thy neighbour's wife, neither shalt thou covet thy neighbour's houfe, his field, or his man-fervant, or his maid-fervant, his ox, or his afs, or any thing that is thy neighbour's.

22 Thefe words the LORD fpake unto all your affembly in the mount out of the midft of the fire, of the cloud, and of the thick darknefs, with a great voice; and he ad eu no more: and he wrote them in two tables of

stone, and delivered them unto me.

23 And it came to pafs, when ve heard the voice out of the midff of the darkness, (for the mountain did burn with fire,) that ye came near unto me, even all the heads of your tribes, and your elders,

24 And ye faid, Behold, the LORD our God hath thewed us his glory, and his grea nefs, and we have heard his voice out of the mid of the fire: we have feen this day that God doth talk with man, and ne liveth.

25 Now therefore way thould we die? For this great fire will confanie us. If we hear the voice of the LORD our God any more, then we shall die.

26 For who is there of all flesh, that hath heard the voice of the living God fpeaking out of the midst of the fire, as we have, and lived?

27 Go thou near, and hear all that the LORD our God fhall fay; and fpeak thou unto us all that the LORD our God thall fpeak unto thee, and we will hear it, and do it.

28 And the LORD heard the voice of your words, when ye fpake unto me; and the LORD faid unto me, I have heard the voice of the words of this people, which they have. fpoken unto thee: they have well faid all that they have fpoken.

29 O that there were fuch an heart in them, that they would tear me, and keep all my commandments always, that it might be well with them, and with their children for ever!

30 Go fay to them, Get you into your tents again.

31 But as for thee, ftand thou here by me, and I will fpeak unto thee all the commandments, and the ftatutes, and the judgments, which thoufhalt teach them, that they may do them in the land which I give them to poffefs it.
