6 And all they that were about them ftrengthened their hands with veffels of filver, with gold, with goods, and with beafts, and with precious things, befides all that was willingly offered.

and the children of Ifrael were in the cities, the people gathered themselves together as one man to Terufalem.

2 Then ftood up leihua the fon of Jozadak, and his brethren the priests, and Zerubbabel the fon of Shealtiel, and his brethren, and builded the altar of the God of Ifrael, to offer burnt-offerings thereon, as it is written in the law of Mofes the man of God.

3 Aal they fet the altar upon his bafes; for fear cras upon them becaufe of the eople of thofe countries: and they offered burnt-offer ings thereon unto the LORD, even burnt-offerings morning and evening.

4 They kept alfo the feast of tabernacles, as it is written, and offered the daily burnt-offerings by number, according to the custom, as the duty of every day required;

5 And afterward offered the continual burnt offering, both of the new moons, and of all the fet feats of the LORD that were confecrated, and of every one that willingly offered a tree will-odering unto the LORD.

6 From the first day of the feventh month began they to offer burnt-offerings unto the LORD. But the foundation of the temple of the LORD was not yet laid.

7 They gave money alfo unto the mafons, and to the carpenters; and meat, and drink, and oil, unto them of Zidon, and to them of Tyre, to bring cedar trees from Lebanon to the fea of Jop, a, according to the grant that they had of Cyrus king of Persia.

8 Now in the fecond year of their coming unto the house of God at Jerufalem, in the fecond month, began Zerubbabel the fon of Shealtiel, and Jefhua the fon of Jozidak, and the remnant of their brethren the priests and the Levites, and all they that were come out of the captivity unto Jerufalem; and appointed the Levites, from twenty years old and up. ward, to fet forward the work of the houfe of the LORD.

9 Then flood Jefhua with his fons and his brethren, Kadmiel and his fons, the fons of Judah, together, to fet forward the workmen in the houfe of God: the fons of Henalad, with their fons and their brethren the Levites.

11 And they fang together by courfe in praising and giving thanks unto the LORD; becaufe he is good, for his mercy endureth for ever toward Ifrael. And all the people fhouted with a great thout when they praifed the LORD, because the foundation of the houfe of the LORD was laid.

taxerxes: 17 his decree.

Now when the adverfries of Judah and

Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity builded the temple unto the LORD God of Ifrael;

2 Then they came to Zerubbabel, and to the chief of the fathers, and faid unto them, Let us build with you; for we feek your God as ye dɔ; and we do facrifice unto him fince the days of Efar-haddon king of Affur, which brought us up hither.

3 But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the reft of the chief of the fathers of Ifrael, faid unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build an houfe unto our God; but we ourselves together will build unto the LORD God of Ift: el, as king Cyrus the king of Perfia hath commanded us.

4 Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building,

5 And hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their purpofe, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.

6 And in the reign of Ahafuerus, in the beginning of his reign, wrote they unto him an accufation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerufalem.

7 And in the days of Artaxerxes wrote Biihlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of their companions, unto Artaxerxes king of Perfia, and the writing of the letter was writ ten in the Syrian tongue, and interpreted in the Syrian tongue.

8 Rehum the chancellor and Shimthai the fcribe wrote a letter againit Jerufalem to Artaxerxes the king, in this fort:

9 Then wrote Rehum the chancellor, and Shimfhai the fcribe, and the rest of their com panions; the Dinaites, the Apharfathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharfites, the Arche vites, the Babylonians, the Sufanchites, the Dehavites, and the Elamites,

10 And the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Afnappar brought over, and fet in the cities of Samaria, and the rest that are on this fide the river, and at fuch a time.

11 ¶This is the copy of the letter that they fent unto him, even unto Artaxerxes the king; Thy fervants, the men on this fide the river, and at such a time.

12 Be it known unto the king, that the Jews which came up from thee to us are come unto Jerufalem, building the rebellious and the bad city, and have fet up the walls thereof, and joined the foundations.

13 Be it known now unto the king, that if this city be builded, and the walls fet up again, then will they not pay toll, tribute, and cuf tom, and thou thalt endamage the revenue of the kings.

14 Now becaufe we have maintenance from the king's palace, and it was not meet for us to fee the king's dishonour, therefore have we fent and certified the king;

16 We certily the king that, if this city be builded again, and the walls thereof fet up, by this means thou thalt have no portion on this fide the river.

17¶hen fent the king an answer unto Rehum the chancellor, and to Shimthai the fcribe, and to the reft of their companions that dwell in Samaria, and unto the reti beyond the river, Peace, and at fuch a time.

18 The letter which ye fent unto us hath been plainly read before me.

19 And I commanded, and fearch hath been made, and it is found that this city of old time hath made infurrection against kings, and that rebellion and fedition have been made therein.

20 There have been mighty kings alfo over Jerufalem, which have ruled over all countries beyond the river; and toll, tribute, and cuftom, was paid unto them.

21 Give ye now commandment to caufe thefe men to ceafe, and that this city be not builded, until another commandment fhall be given from me.

22 Take heed now that ye fail not to do this: why fhould damage grow to the hurt of the kings?

23 Now when the copy of king Artaxerxes's letter was read before Rehum, and Shimthai the fcribe, and their companions, they went up in hafte to Jerufalem unto the Jews, and made them to ceafe by force and

power.

24 Then ceafed the work of the house of God, which is at Jerufalem. So it ceafed unto the fecond year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.

2 Then roft up Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jefa the fon of Jozadak, and began to build the house of God which is at Jerufalem and with them were the prophets of God helping them.

3 At the fame time came to them Tatnai, governor on this fide the river, and Shetharboznai, and their companions, and faid thus unto them, Who hath commanded you to build this house, and to make up this wall?

4 Then faid we unto them after this manner, What are the names of the men that make this building?

5 But the eye of their God was upon the elders of the Jews, that they could not cause them to ceafe, till the matter came to Darius: and then they returned anfwer by letter concerning

this matter.

Darius's decrét.

8 Be it known unto the king, that we went into the province of Judea, to the house of the great God, which is builded with great ftones, and timber is laid in the walls, and this work goeth faft on, and profpereth in their hands.

9 Then asked we thofe elders, and faid unto them thus, Who commanded you to build this house, and to make up theie walls?

10 We afked their names alfo to certify thee, that we might write the names of the men that were the chief of them.

11 And thus they returned us anfwer, faying, We are the fervants of the God of heaven and earth, and build the houfe that was builded these many years ago, which a great king of Ifrael builded and fet up.

12 But after that our fathers had provoked the God of heaven unto wrath, he gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this heule, and carried the people away into Babylon.

13 But in the first year of Cyrus the king of Babylon the fame king Cyrus made a decree to build this house of God.

14 And the veffels alfo of gold and filver of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar took out of the temple that was in Jerufalem, and brought them into the temple of Babylon, thofe did Cyrus the king take out of the temple of Babylon, and they were delivered unto one, whofe name was Shehbazzar, whom he had made governor;

15 And faid unto him, Take thefe veffels, go, carry them into the temple that is in Jerufa lem, and let the house of Ġod be builded in his place.

16 Then came the fame Shefhbazzar, and laid the foundation of the houfe of God, which is in Jerufalem: and fince that time even until now hath it been in building, and yet it is not finished.

17 Now therefore, if it feem good to the king, let there be fearch made in the king's treafure house, which is there at Babylon, whether it was

king to build this houfe of God at Jerufalem, and let the king fend his pleasure to us concerning this maiter.

1 Darius advanceth the buildings. 13 The temple is finifbed. 19 The feafs of the dedication, and of the pallover. THEN Darius the king made a decree, and search was made in the house of the rolls, where the treasures were laid up in Babyion.

2 And there was found at Achmethe, in the palace that is in the province of the Medes, a roll, and therein was a record thus written:

3 In the first year of Cyrus the king, the Jame Cyrus the king made a decree concerning the houfe of God at Jerufalem, Let the houfe be builded, the place where they offered facrifices, and let the foundations thereof be ftrongly laid; the height thereof threefcore cubits, and the breadth thereof threescore cubits;

4 With three rows of great ftones, and a row of new timber: and let the expences be given out of the king's houfe:

6 Now therefore, Tatnai, governor beyond the river, Shethar-boznai, and your companions the Aphariachites, which are beyond the river, be ye tar from thence:

7 Let the work of this houfe of God alone; let the governor of the Jews and the elders of the Jews build this houfe of God in hiplace.

8 Moreover I make a decree what ye fhall do to the elders of these Jews for the building

of this house of God: that of the king's goods,

even of the tribute beyond the river, forthwith expences be given unto thefe men, that they be not hindered.

9 And that which they have need of, both young bullocks, and rams, and lambs, for the burnt-offerings of the God of neaven, wheat, falt, wine, and oil, according to the appointment of the priests which are at Jerufalem, let it be given them day by day without rail: 10 That they may offer facrifices of fweet favours unto the God of heaven, and pray for the life of the king, and of his fons.

11 Alfo I have made a decree, that whofoever shall alter this word, let timber be pulled down from his houfe, and being fet up, let him be hanged thereon; and let his house be made a dunghill for this.

12 And the God that hath caufed his name to dwell there destroy all kings and people that fhall put to their hand to alter and to destroy this houfe of God which is at Jerufa.em. I Darius have made a decree; let it be done with speed.

13 Then Tatnai, governor on this fide the river, Shethar-boznai, and their companions, according to that which Darius the king had fent, fo they did fpeedily.

14 And the elders of the Jews builded, and they profpered through the prophefying of Haggai the prophet, and Zechariah the fon of Iddo. And they builded and finished it, according to the commandment of the God of Ifrael, and according to the commandment of Cyrus, and Darius, and Artaxerxes king of Persia.

15 And this houfe was finished on the third day of the month Adar, which was in the fixth year of the reign of Darius the king.

16 And the children of Ifrael, the priests, and the Levites, and the reft of the children of the captivity, kept the dedication of this house of God with joy,

17 And offered at the dedication of this house of God an hundred bullocks, two hundred rams, four hundred lambs: and for a fin-offering for all Ifrael, twelve he-goats, according to the number of the tribes of If rael.

18 And they fet the priests in their divifions, and the Levites in their courfes, for the fervice of God which is at Jerufalem; as it is written in the book of Mofes,

19 And the children of the captivity kept the paffover upon the fourteenth day of the first month.

20 For the priests and the Levites were purified together, all of them were pure, and killed the paffover for all the children of the captivity, and for their brethren the pricits, and for themselves.
