PREFACE.

I do not know when this account of MR. BUTCHER was written, but it is evident he intended to add much more to it at some future time, had he been spared to do so. But with this account and the knowledge we have of him, we may say, he was a man of God," made so by the Grace of God, and the teaching of the Holy Spirit.

Some who may read this account will have known MR. BUTCHER much longer than I have known him. The first time I saw him was at the Bedford Anniversary, in Mr. Thornber's time, about the year 1869. He was then on a begging tour for a little place of truth at Littleport, and I believe he was pretty well encouraged by the friends at Bedford. Before he left there, he invited me to go over to preach at Littleport, and I did so on several occasions before he left there. I well remember the last time I stayed at his house. It was on a Sabbath day. At that time he had a very delicate wife and two young children: both the children were in a dying state: the younger child died on the following Monday morning, and the elder one on the following Tuesday or Wednesday, and both were buried together in the same grave. believe that circumstance took place in 1871. In what Mr. Butcher has written, he has not given any account of the little Baptist chapel that was built at Littleport, therefore he might have written his account of himself before the chapel was built. Mr. Butcher was born, as he says, in Littleport, on the 8th day of January, 1824, and he died at Siddal, Halifax, Yorkshire, on the 17th of December, 1890, in his 67th year. He left Littleport and came to reside at Siddal, in 1872. At that time he came to work for me, and remained in my service up to the time of his death, and I can say of him, that he was
