21st.

Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward. 2 John 8.

Suffer us not, O Lord, we entreat Thee, to lose through carelessness of spirit, any good things that may from time to time have been wrought in us, through Thine appointed means of grace, or opportunities vouchsafed us of Christian instruction: but knowing what treacherous hearts we have, may we look, yea, give diligent heed to ourselves; that so both we, and those who have watched over and cared for our souls, may at the last receive that full reward, which Thy grace bestows through Christ Jesus. Amen.

22nd.

He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. Mark xvi. 16.

Oh merciful Lord, who hast opened our blind eyes to see something of the blessedness of being saved of Thee: may we more and more fully partake of the blessings of Thy salvation, in Thine own appointed way. Lord, we believe, help Thou, we pray Thee, our unbelief, and increase our faith. Lord, we have received the outward visible sign of baptism; oh, that we may indeed be baptized with the Holy Ghost and with power, and thus, with all Thy faithful people, be saved everlastingly, through Christ Jesus. Amen.

23rd.

Remember me, O Lord, with the favour that thou bearest unto thy people: O visit me with thy salvation; that I may see the good of thy chosen, &c. Psalm cvi. 4, 5.

Grant, Lord, we beseech Thee, that while so many vainly ask, "Who will show us any good," it may be our happy lot to be remembered by Thee with the special favour Thou bearest to the people whom Thou hast chosen to be Thine own inheritance. May we not only see their good, but rejoice in their gladness, being ourselves visited with Thy salvation, and taught, with all Thy nation, to glory in nothing, save only in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, our only Saviour, and everlasting hope. Amen.

24th.

And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know, &c. Deut. viii. 3.

Oh God of Israel, who art, we trust, leading us onwards towards the heavenly Canaan; we pray for grace to be truly humbled, and effectually taught, by all the afflictive discipline of Thy providence. Oh do Thou feed us ever with food convenient for us. Grant that with the bread of the means of grace, the Word that proceeds from Thy mouth may bring the grace itself and amidst all changes, may we embrace Thy promises with joy, and expect their accomplishment in faith, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

25th.

He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things. Eph. iv. 10.

Oh Thou, who for us wast not only born to dwell with men, but didst die and descend into the lower parts of the earth: may we learn to silence all the shudderings of nature at the prospect of the grave, since Thou hast Thyself slept there and may we more and more in heart thither ascend, where Thou wentest up on high, to lead captivity captive, and give gifts unto men. Oh that we may there in due time be permitted to see Thee fill all things, and share thy triumph, world without end. Amen.

26th.

Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost. Acts viii. 17.

Blessed Lord, who gavest to the primitive believers miraculous gifts of the Holy Ghost, through the laying on of the Apostles' hands make it, we pray Thee, our earnest desire to receive His yet more precious, if less extraordinary influences, as the Spirit of life, and light, and comfort; and may they be specially poured forth on us, and on all who call themselves Christians, through the agency of those whom Thou yet appointest to be the ministers and stewards of Thy mysteries, through Christ Jesus, our Lord. Amen.

27th.

He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, &c. John xiv. 21.

Gracious Saviour, we do, we trust, love Thee, though most inadequately, and only because Thou first lovedst us: Oh may love constrain us to aim at knowing and keeping all Thy commandments, feeling that none of them can ever be grievous: and abiding in the love both of the Father and of the Son, may God manifest in the flesh, be made manifest unto us, and the Spirit take of the things of Christ to shew them unto us; that so we may have cause to rejoice in God for ever, through Christ His Son. Amen.

28th.

Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ. Phil. i. 27.

Oh Lord our God, Thou hast by Thy grace called us to the citizenship of the new Jerusalem. Oh do Thou also so transform our whole life and conversation that they may be conformable to so high an honour; and that ceasing from all the works and ways of the children of this world, we may serve Thee with our spirits in the gospel of Thy Son, and study to walk before Thee in all things as becometh saints, through the same Lord and only Saviour, Christ Jesus. Amen.

29th.

Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

2 Tim. ii. 22.

Oh God of holiness; who amongst us could say, "I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?" Yet do Thou so graciously hear and fulfil the desire of our hearts, when we call upon Thee for renewing and sanctifying grace, that we may be strengthened to mortify and flee every lust that warreth against the soul, and stedfastly to follow righteousness, faith, charity, and peace, that so we may be made of Thee vessels of honor, meet for the Master's use, through Christ Jesus. Amen.

30th.

Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. 1 Thess. v. 21.

Father of lights, with whom the best wisdom of man is but foolishness: we pray that the conviction of this truth may induce us to bring our every subject of consideration, to the law and to the testimony, for Thy decision. Keep us from ever adopting any rule either of faith or practice, without first thus proving it and that which this test pronounces good, may we hold fast; and all that it proves evil, have grace utterly to renounce, for Jesus' sake. Amen.
